6bta dies while under load

May 7, 2023 at 2:43 pm I have a 1996 32ā Blackman with twin 6bta.Ā specs on motors: Cummins 1996 330HP 6BTA5.9-M3 Serial #: Starboard 45386611, Port 45378680 Both mains ran fine until the port main started dying occasionally while underway and over 1500 rpm. It has gotten so bad I canāt run longer than 5-10 minutes above 1200 rpm with out it stalling. I have replaced: injectors (two were bad), lift pump, shut off solenoid. Had the tank polished and have replaced the f…

using VDO gauges and switching to single station

May 7, 2023 at 9:26 am Engines are 370 diamonds that were set up as a dual station. I used these engines to repower my vessel changed the oil senders/alarm but wanted to see how the temperature and high temp Ā alarm sender functioned before switching out. Ran the vessel in February with Ā mid 30 degree water temps at 2300 and water temperature gauge read close to 200 heat gun at head read 160’s fast fwd to now and by the time I ran Ā them up to 2000 temp gauge pegs…
2 RepliesMay 7, 2023 at 3:53 pm If your engines have the standard combo block it has 3 places where oil senders and switches can be mounted without using a āTā.. two standard ones and a third that requires an adapter to allow standard 1/8ā threads. Should have plenty of room.Ā <br />I have two stations and a non- standard digital multi gauge that uses single station senders. So I use all three ports – 1 Dual station, 1 Single station, and a low pressure switch. No p…

QSC runs a bit rough at certain revs
This topic has 6 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 11 months ago
April 12, 2023 at 3:59 am Goodmorning Sailors, This is a question in the category: is this normal? As long as we have our single QSC490 trawler I have always noticed certain revpoints where there is much more shaking of the engine than others. In our case this is between 800 and 900 and between 1550 and 1850. Especially the latter window is quite noticeable. Up to 1500 revs the engine runs very smooth but beyond that you feel a roughness going through the boat which smoo…
6 RepliesMay 5, 2023 at 11:38 pm Thanks Tony. It certainly looks like it. It seems like some …hole has tried to realign that mount by turning the jamnut against the rubber. Now I have returned the jam nut in it’s proper position the snubber has already recovered a tiny bit. When I shine a light behind it I can see it’s not touching the SS bases anymore…although on ly by a fraction of a mm. What is the normal life span of these engine mounts (these are 15…

QSB 5.9 Fuel Lift Pump

May 5, 2023 at 12:22 pm I have a new to me QSB 5.9 380 HP, S/N 46867441.Ā In my short experience with it, when I turn the key on, I can hear (what I believe is) the fuel lift pump.Ā It runs for 10 seconds or so, then stops, at which time I start the engine.Ā Today, when I turn the key, the lift pump runs… but it continues for 30 seconds or more and then stops (I presume it has timed out).Ā If I turn the key off, wait a minute or two, and repeat… the same th…
3 RepliesMay 5, 2023 at 4:10 pm The QSB 5.9 fuel system is , IMO a bastardĀ “Cummins” design, whereas the QSC and QSL are Bosch.. Both systems use the elec pump to do the initial prime or/fill a filter as you said,Ā The big difference is after start-up.. The QSB 5.9 needs the elec pump to run all the time.. Your fuel system has a built-inĀ low pressureĀ pump (90 psi-ish at the last change filter) .. Superior system.. The new 6,.7 went to Bosch.

Throttle flat spot

May 2, 2023 at 4:46 pm My QSC 8.3 has developed a intermitant flat spot when rolling power on.Ā Suddenly rpm stops climbing. Advancing throttel further has no effect and suddenly an explosive rush of power. Happened three times in 600nm trip. Engine has 1320 hours , uses no oil and tempatures all in range. Boost pressure however varies up to 10# at constant RPM. No obvious boost leaks but suspect condensation drain might be stuck open. Could it effect boost pressure b…
1 ReplyMay 4, 2023 at 8:43 pm A bad condensation drain could do that if indeed you are getting a 10PSI drop from the leak — Cap it for a few trips and see if that solves the issue–Remember pressures in there can beĀ 20PSI ++

6BTA Oil Pan Leak

May 2, 2023 at 8:23 am Hello Forum, I recently discovered oil under my engine.Ā I noticed it after a 5 hours of running across 2 days. (none there previously – as I was inspecting engine prior to trip).Ā I believe it is coming from the pan connection. My best guess is that it leaks a tablespoon over an hour (maybe less). Questions: Does anyone think it is not the pan interface after seeing my photos? Is it safe to retorque the bolts to spec (I believe the spec …
1 ReplyMay 4, 2023 at 8:03 pm If it was me, I’d pull each bolt one at a time remove what ever oil you can (make the bolt dry) coat the thread and the shoulder with Rectorseal #5 and tighten to spec — chart attached–On bolt this size, IMO and good “feel” is better that a measure bolt torque.

MDL4 gene fuel filter swap
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 11 months ago
May 1, 2023 at 6:23 pm Hello Everyone, I finally gave up on the mechanical transfer pump, II just cant get it to stop leaking. I decided to go with an electric seachoice 4-7 psi fuel pump. While changing it I decided maybe it would be worth changing out the rectangle fuel filter for a regular spin on. Any reason why not to do this? thanks , Paul
1 ReplyMay 4, 2023 at 7:29 pm If you can do it practically /100% reliableĀ and it makes maintenance easier, then go for it.Ā Use something less that 10 Mic if this is a “last chance” fuel filter.

April 28, 2023 at 12:05 am I have had small bubbles in my coolant expansion tank for the past month this past week they have gotten so bad it is now displacing a significant amount of coolant about a full expansion tanks worth. April 11, 2023 at 11:47 pm 6bta 5.9Ā 970 CPL is there a cummins system that used a powerto kill the engine if so there can I find a diagram
1 ReplyMay 4, 2023 at 6:57 pm All you have to do is LEARN how the lever works that the externalĀ solenoid operates.Ā Basically you have an “true diesel” that needs NO power to run, only to start.. Your solenoid defeats that.Ā Learn how it works and then be cleverĀ using “mechanics 101Ā — There is no kit or diagram..Ā Ā The solenoid you are dealing with should be similar to the pics attachedĀ but will not be easy to deal with.. It’s kinda buried.

April 2, 2023 at 3:24 am Hi Guys While I have the aftercooler and HX etc off the engine its far easier to pull the impeller (its actually the only way on the port engine being so crammed in cose to the fuel tanks) On pulling the impeller out a chrome ‘cup’ and spring came out.Ā Now I understand that the DJ pumps pump is similar to the SBmar pump however i have no doubt that it has some Tony tweaks to it.Ā Looking at the exploded diagram of the pump I found o…

QSM11 Dry to Wet Exhaust Replacement
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 11 months ago
March 29, 2023 at 6:01 pm I’m considering purchasing a boat with QSM11 engines that have already had both turbos replaced due to the heat issues discussed at length in this forum. I see that members have discussed the Wet Exhaust manifold mod that apparently Cummins produced as a modification to these engines to better resolve the excess heat problem (after you’ve ensured the engines are not over-propped) and resultant cracking.Ā But I can’t find any di…
1 ReplyMay 4, 2023 at 6:38 pm Converting from Dry to wet is not really practical……… You’d be better of propping downĀ to keep you GPH at 2000 RPM under 20 GPH cruise load as you use the boat and maintain the aftercooler in pristine condition.

May 2, 2023 at 4:04 pm Have a 1997 Cummings 6cta 450 diamond series. I recently purchased a enviro vent kit. Reading the directions it says to tap off valve cover. Looking at my motor it looks like the crankcase breather tube comes off the block and goes to a filter before running through a dump hose to the bilge. May 2, 2023 at 3:27 am I’ve installed new fuel filters and new air filters. Ā I’ve cleaned the compressor wheels and cleaned up the aftercoolers (as per Seaboard Marine kit). When she’s running, the Starboard side runs rich compared to the port side.
