November 15, 2016 at 7:01 pm The mechanic who was previously looking after our engines disconnected the preheaters on the top of the aftercoolers and told me when I asked it was because the engines didn’t need them in our hot climate and they are not good for the alternators. Is this true or should I reconnect them? The other thing is he just disconnected them by taking the leads off the terminals at the preheaters then taped them up. It looks untidy so if they are no…

November 15, 2016 at 11:58 am Hello all, New to this site. Like many others I have experienced exhaust leak issues on my QSM’s. They are 2003 builds, commissioned in 2004. The data plate hp is stamped 650. Now have 2500 hours. Within the first 500 hours my starboard had leaks and since then there have been three services on the motor, the last being with new manifold and turbo. In the last year my port has succumbed to the same issue, but for some time exhibited very l…

    • QSM-11 Initial Ignition of Engine

November 9, 2016 at 9:31 am I have 2003 QSM-11 with pretty low hours. When I first turn on the main power to the engine, then turn the key on and wait for its testing routine. I then press the start button, it start then immediately cuts out. If I leave the main power on but turn off the engine and let it sit for a week or so I’ll have the same problem. I then go to the main power for the engine, turn it off, then turn the power and the key back on, wait for the test…

November 15, 2016 at 6:49 pm Before getting carried away, try replacing the ignition rectifier behind the helm station. Ā No guarantees, but a cheap part to replace known to create odd starting issues. Ā I had odd ignition issues on a 2006 QSB 5.9 that were solved when I replaced the rectifier and verified the connections were good.

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byWilliam Brown 7 years ago

November 14, 2016 at 11:51 am While on a 14 day trip down the A-ICW we noticed a small diesel leak in the vicinity of the high pressure fuel pump.Ā  It does not appear to be coming from any of the inlet/outlet fittings.Ā Ā  The engine is 6 years old and has 638hrs running time.Ā Ā  AĀ single paper towel placed under the pump could absorb the amount of diesel leaking after an 8 hourĀ run.Ā Ā  Ā  Does this type of leak eventually lead to a catastrophic engine failure?Ā  Should the pump b…

    • Heat Exchanger Flat End Cap Fix

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 7 years ago

October 19, 2016 at 9:25 pm Is your heat exchanger cap weeping at the outer perimeter? Ā Is it “flattened” from years of over-tightening? Ā It is important to put the “concave” back in the cap if it has been over tightened over time and flattened. Think of the cap as a big lock-washer as you “snug” it up. If itĀ“s too flat you will crush the center gum washer before putting any sealing pressure on the outer perimeter. Here’s the fix i…

November 11, 2016 at 6:37 am That’s why they call him a “salesman”..   Not sure how important is is for you to add that 3rd station, but if you zero out with Mercury, and this is super important and you have the budget, there are options that could replace the entire Mercury Electronic side of your engines, “SMARTCRAP”, and that would give you lots of options.. But it would be expensive, but once you made that move, then you have real long…

November 7, 2016 at 10:59 am Quick question…was helping a friend deliver his new boat…powered with twin QSB 6.7 550hp engines and water jets. Ā Had been told to run at 85% load as optimum cruise. Ā That put us at 3,000 RPM…felt too high for me but I have no experience with jet drives…only props. November 6, 2016 at 5:57 pm Hey Everyone, IĀ“m looking at buying a Tiara 3200. It is a 2006 and has 475 hours on the engines. These will be my first diesel engines and I was wondering what I should plan for annual maintenance costs? Also, should I be worried about the “marine age” of these engines? October 23, 2016 at 7:50 am Mechanic states that once pitting has occurred inside exhaust elbow they are no good.Ā  Can allow seawater to run back into turbo.Ā  Has quoted me a price of $1700.00 each to rebuild old exhaust elbows.Ā  SBMar has the elbows for around 1650.00 new.Ā  Are the SBMar’s elbows a lower grade of stainless than if I were to rebuild?Ā  Are the SBMar’s made in China?

October 19, 2016 at 9:43 pm The later style Champ heat exchanger (offset inlet/outlet) appears to have a zinc length issue which is confirmed by some and negated by others. November 12, 2016 at 8:23 pm Rob, I was changing out all my zincs today.Ā  All, except one, had more than 50% life.Ā  But, I changed them anyway, thinking they would not go another season.Ā  The one exception was on the oil cooler.Ā  All that came out was the cap.Ā  Do you know if the remnants of that zinc would cause me any issue?Ā  Water temps are normal.Ā  Thanks.
