I have 2003 QSM-11 with pretty low hours. When I first turn on the main power to the engine, then turn the key on and wait for its testing routine. I then press the start button, it start then immediately cuts out. If I leave the main power on but turn off the engine and let it sit for a week or so I’ll have the same problem.

I then go to the main power for the engine, turn it off, then turn the power and the key back on, wait for the test routine and it starts just fine. Sometimes an engine light remains on but it will rest its self at the next start.

I have had the Cummins mechanics test to nauseum. They have given up other than suggest to replace the main engine computer. I have replace the key and start up buttons. Engine when running runs fine. I am worried a part will fail when out in the middle of no where.

    Any thoughts

Before getting carried away, try replacing the ignition rectifier behind the helm station. Ā No guarantees, but a cheap part to replace known to create odd starting issues. Ā I had odd ignition issues on a 2006 QSB 5.9 that were solved when I replaced the rectifier and verified the connections were good.

Please see the pictures. Engine Hour 634. The boat was bought by an individual in 2003 then got sick. There the boat sat with very little hours until the wife decided to sell it in 2012.

I have had Cummins power South look at it, test compression and did a full engine certification before I bought the boat. No Cummins Mech has solve the issue.

This may be a is a tough one……..

Because your engine is 12+ years old, let’s start with Ā some real good pictures showing the ECM side of the engine–I want to see all, Ā Clear & in focus just as if I was on your boat..

    History–when did this start happening?
Post a engine serial number and total hours to date..
    Single or twins?
Picture of the help so I can ID your instrumentation type

Post here and send direct in Hi-res ([email protected])Ā Smart Craft QSM 40 Pin & ECMStarter Ground to Block
