ZF 220 A gearboxes were pulled apart for bearing and seal replacement while the engines were rebuilt and an internal crack was noted in one of the housings, refer attached photos.

It appears that the crack has propagated from a pilot pressure hole, does anyone have a flow diagram for the ZF 220 so I can figure out what caused the crack.

I am thinking of using a rotary burr to open up the crack and TIG welding it back together then redrilling the pilot hole and remaching surfaces as required.Ā

Any thoughts or ideas on what could have caused the crack and what the pilot hole is for.

Will be back at the boat next week Tony, will snap some high rez pics and post them.

Am wondering what regulates the high pressure that the gearbox uses to lower pressure for bearing lubrication.
