April 24, 2023 at 1:55 pm Received an aftermarket same as OEM starter from SB Mar and there is an additional plug not on my original starter. 2004 6cta 8.3 480CE. Picture below.Ā Bottom at rear of starter, black around 7 o’clock. Thanks

Throttle flat spot
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
May 2, 2023 at 4:46 pm My QSC 8.3 has developed a intermitant flat spot when rolling power on.Ā Suddenly rpm stops climbing. Advancing throttel further has no effect and suddenly an explosive rush of power. Happened three times in 600nm trip. Engine has 1320 hours , uses no oil and tempatures all in range. Boost pressure however varies up to 10# at constant RPM. No obvious boost leaks but suspect condensation drain might be stuck open. Could it effect boost pressure b…
1 ReplyMay 4, 2023 at 8:43 pm A bad condensation drain could do that if indeed you are getting a 10PSI drop from the leak — Cap it for a few trips and see if that solves the issue–Remember pressures in there can beĀ 20PSI ++

6BTA Oil Pan Leak
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
May 2, 2023 at 8:23 am Hello Forum, I recently discovered oil under my engine.Ā I noticed it after a 5 hours of running across 2 days. (none there previously – as I was inspecting engine prior to trip).Ā I believe it is coming from the pan connection. My best guess is that it leaks a tablespoon over an hour (maybe less). Questions: Does anyone think it is not the pan interface after seeing my photos? Is it safe to retorque the bolts to spec (I believe the spec …
1 ReplyMay 4, 2023 at 8:03 pm If it was me, I’d pull each bolt one at a time remove what ever oil you can (make the bolt dry) coat the thread and the shoulder with Rectorseal #5 and tighten to spec — chart attached–On bolt this size, IMO and good “feel” is better that a measure bolt torque.

MDL4 gene fuel filter swap
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
May 1, 2023 at 6:23 pm Hello Everyone, I finally gave up on the mechanical transfer pump, II just cant get it to stop leaking. I decided to go with an electric seachoice 4-7 psi fuel pump. While changing it I decided maybe it would be worth changing out the rectangle fuel filter for a regular spin on. Any reason why not to do this? thanks , Paul
1 ReplyMay 4, 2023 at 7:29 pm If you can do it practically /100% reliableĀ and it makes maintenance easier, then go for it.Ā Use something less that 10 Mic if this is a “last chance” fuel filter.

Bubbles in coolant in coolant

April 28, 2023 at 12:05 am I have had small bubbles in my coolant expansion tank for the past month this past week they have gotten so bad it is now displacing a significant amount of coolant about a full expansion tanks worth. I have done a coolant compression test and. Coolant compression gas test both indicated that I do not have leaks in the head or combustion gasses in my coolant. Radiator cap is brand new, all heat exchangers were serviced within 200 hours and turbo…

April 11, 2023 at 11:47 pm 6bta 5.9Ā 970 CPL is there a cummins system that used a powerto kill the engine if so there can I find a diagram
1 ReplyMay 4, 2023 at 6:57 pm All you have to do is LEARN how the lever works that the externalĀ solenoid operates.Ā Basically you have an “true diesel” that needs NO power to run, only to start.. Your solenoid defeats that.Ā Learn how it works and then be cleverĀ using “mechanics 101Ā — There is no kit or diagram..Ā Ā The solenoid you are dealing with should be similar to the pics attachedĀ but will not be easy to deal with.. It’s kinda buried.

DJ Pumps 1730C Pump – Issues

April 2, 2023 at 3:24 am Hi Guys While I have the aftercooler and HX etc off the engine its far easier to pull the impeller (its actually the only way on the port engine being so crammed in cose to the fuel tanks) On pulling the impeller out a chrome ‘cup’ and spring came out.Ā Now I understand that the DJ pumps pump is similar to the SBmar pump however i have no doubt that it has some Tony tweaks to it.Ā Looking at the exploded diagram of the pump I found o…

QSM11 Dry to Wet Exhaust Replacement
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
March 29, 2023 at 6:01 pm I’m considering purchasing a boat with QSM11 engines that have already had both turbos replaced due to the heat issues discussed at length in this forum. I see that members have discussed the Wet Exhaust manifold mod that apparently Cummins produced as a modification to these engines to better resolve the excess heat problem (after you’ve ensured the engines are not over-propped) and resultant cracking.Ā But I can’t find any di…
1 ReplyMay 4, 2023 at 6:38 pm Converting from Dry to wet is not really practical……… You’d be better of propping downĀ to keep you GPH at 2000 RPM under 20 GPH cruise load as you use the boat and maintain the aftercooler in pristine condition.

Envirovent ccv kit install issue 6cta

May 2, 2023 at 4:04 pm Have a 1997 Cummings 6cta 450 diamond series. I recently purchased a enviro vent kit. Reading the directions it says to tap off valve cover. Looking at my motor it looks like the crankcase breather tube comes off the block and goes to a filter before running through a dump hose to the bilge. Can someone please clarify if you remove the factory crankcase filter or connect the Envirovent hose direct to it. Pics are attached to help paint a picture…
3 RepliesMay 4, 2023 at 6:28 pm You have a very late build 6CTA 8.3 CPL 1929 450 (rated 430BHP 2600 RPM–same as a later “450 Diamond) ).. I was not even aware that the engine was still being made.. Very good engine but technically itĀ is not a “450 Diamond” as it’s a M2 using the Nippon Denso EP9 injection pump system.Ā Ā Like all the earlier C’s, prop them to reach a solid 2700+ RPM and reach it easy when fully loaded.Ā Notice the actual ser…

August 29, 2022 at 11:12 am Hello, I have twin QSB 5.9LĀ 480hp Im getting a low fuel pressure code on my Console. I have changed the lift pump, both fuel filters one on engine and the racor. Lift pump also have been relocated off the engine. Is there a additional pump and screen? Thanks, Caw Today Im installing a fuel pressure gauge.
8 RepliesMay 2, 2023 at 2:20 pm After back tracking and tracing 12v vs 24v lift pumps. Found out my engines require the 24v pumps, not the 12v pumps that superceded the origanl pumps.Ā Was able to find 2 at Cummins and installed them ,Problem Solved!

Stbd. Engine Running Rich?
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
May 2, 2023 at 3:27 am I’ve installed new fuel filters and new air filters. Ā I’ve cleaned the compressor wheels and cleaned up the aftercoolers (as per Seaboard Marine kit). When she’s running, the Starboard side runs rich compared to the port side. Ā The starboard is original to the boat at 1994 with 570 hours, the port is a 2017 with about the same number of hours (on the hour meters at least). Ā Since I am unfamiliar with how much these engines shou…
1 ReplyMay 2, 2023 at 4:52 am What engines?Ā Mechanical 6BTA’s? That would be normal at startup if they have not been taken out and put under load and brought up to normal running temps, especially if you’re pumping up the rpm’s at the dock.

Cummins QSC 8.3 runs rough at idle speed in gear, clears above idle.

September 1, 2022 at 12:23 pm My 2014 Back Cove 37 single QSC 8.3-600 HO with 458 hours runs very rough when in gear at idle speed, enough to cause the boat interior to shake. Ā Advancing the throttle slightly stops the problem. Here are some particulars: When started (ZF 286A 0.91 gear not engaged), the engine idles smoothly @600 rpm. Ā Varying engine speed while in Warm Mode is also smooth with no sign of rough operation. Ā When the ZF is engaged, the engine speed remains st…
10 RepliesApril 30, 2023 at 6:04 pm Linear vibration (when your instruments hanging from the ceiling vibrate ,your boat rails move,Ā or you “feel it” on the back deck or in the seat of your pants) is totally different from “gear rattle” which can be very annoying sound wise. Gear rattle is typically related to a worn out torsional coupling or mis-match at lower /idle RPM’s and goes typically away when the RPM is raised a tad,.Ā I guess some boats coul…

Alternator tension adjuster
This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
April 27, 2023 at 8:56 pm Which direction does the alternator tension adjuster bolt loosen? Is it left or right to loosen it? Or is there some other trick to loosen the alternator to get the belt off?I even used a 15″ breaker bar after spraying with PB Blaster penetrant. This is on a Back Cove 34 with a Cummings QSB 6.7.
4 RepliesApril 30, 2023 at 5:11 pm Besides the tension bolt, loosen to lower pivot bolt so you can push on the alternator to loosen the belt.. The system seems to work, but I have my doubts as to the overall engineering behind it…….. It has room for error. Ā BTW, the actually belt used here is made by Hutchison Aerospace in the UK — It is one of the stretchy series and we call it our silver belt ————-Ā 8PK1474Ā stretchyĀ Ā Ā Ā You should s…

In the mean time, I got a job overseas for 2 years and left my boat w…
1 ReplyApril 28, 2023 at 5:17 am Until you have the time to pull the head on the “suspect engine” and assess rust damage, you need to protect the engine as best you can with lots of #2 in the cylinders.Ā As to the engine that is running, fresh oil and a start up every week or so using fresh water on the seawater side.. If the engines have milky oil, you need to address that. Pull the valve covers and look for water /rust?
