Exhaust and muffler sizing
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
January 25, 2022 at 2:38 pm Just curious to know of proper muffler sizing for my 6bt 210hp Cummins motors, engines I pulled out had 4ā centek mufflers and exhaust piping. Would this size muffler be too small for what I have setup now or is the back pressure too much? Iāve read that sometimes holes are drilled in the fore and aft baffles to help with the flow. Any info is greatly appreciated.Ā
2 RepliesJanuary 26, 2022 at 9:32 am The motors that were pulled were Volvo TMD40B diesels at 124hp, they were setup with single 4ā centek mufflers downstream from the turbos about 36ā then straight out of the transom. Total system is roughly 7-8 feet long at the max. Iāll post a few photos of the old and new setups. As of now Iām running straight pipes out of the transom with a surge chambers.Ā

QSC Raw Water Pipe Connections
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
January 25, 2022 at 4:47 pm I have the fuel/oil cooler off engine its leaking at the lower side of the raw water pipes. Is there anything that can be done to make a better seal when these are put back together? Also, the radiator shop I took one cooler to for pressure testing said I should replace the steel mounting bolts with stainless steel. Any thoughts on that suggestion? Thanks.
3 RepliesJanuary 25, 2022 at 6:04 pm I wouldn’t use Rectorseal but the Alco stuff has to be good given it’s used when assembling the aftercoolers. Maybe use some Rectorseal on the bolts during assembly. Ā If not that, use something though.

January 15, 2022 at 11:36 am Hi I am a new power boater having acquired a 1999 Mainship 30 Pilot with a 6BT-5.9m 210 hp engine. I did have a 34 sailboat for 30 + years and got fairly comfortable servicing the small 3GM 30F Yanmar. At least at first glance I find the complexity and lack of room to work a bit daunting. I have 3 questions to day (the first of many !) Zincs: How many engine zincs does this engine have ? – I have read somewhere just one and I did find a l…

October 5, 2021 at 4:08 pm It started to get a bit sticky couple of years ago, hangs on for a second or so but recently started getting worse, last start it stayed engaged to flywheel for about 3 seconds after starting. sorry dont have a good photo of starter and attached photos the aftercooler is removed for servicing. Any advice before i start pulling things apart? Thanks in advance Mark
4 RepliesJanuary 24, 2022 at 12:48 pm Congrats on fixing it! I had a problem with my starter recently, sometimes I pushed the start button and it would not do anything but you would notice that smoke was comming from the starter cable so and starter was not doing anything. I changed the mag switch, cleaned everything and still did it one more time. I got scared of the situation and decided to just get new batteries and a brand new Delco 38mt starter to replace the old 42mt. My guess…

1 ReplyJanuary 23, 2022 at 8:26 am Need a bit more information What kind of batteries? What do you mean by “suddenly died”? Why was the alternator replaced? What voltages are you seeing at the battery terminals when charging and when not charging? For ordinary batteries 6 years is not an exceptionally short lifetime. Gene

January 17, 2022 at 1:35 pm Brains Trust I am constantly burning out my stbd alternator, 3 in the last 4 years. They are Alternator Delco Type 12V 105Amp 19SI from Baxters. 6 RepliesJanuary 21, 2022 at 6:57 am So, the real answer to the question I asked should be , I am not monitoring Battery Terminal voltage Trying to sort out issues like you describe begins with that, so IMO, you are driving blind regardless of whether you are asking too much of your alternator.

October 17, 2019 at 5:37 pm I have 2006 6ctas with 4,803 hrs in a 1978 42 chris craft sport fisherman.. salt water boat. My port motor seems to have an oil leak on the back of the motor at the bottom of the head. does not seem to be the valve cover or anything else. Is this a head leak or even possible. QSC Fuel & Oil Cooler Service
This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
January 17, 2022 at 11:04 am What’s involved with a service for the QSC fuel & oil cooler. I have it off the engine waiting for my aftercooler kits to arrive from Seaboard and want to clean the cooler out. Can this be placed in a 10:1 water acid tub and let soak for a few hours? This is for the fuel & oil cooler only, not the aftercooler. Thanks.
5 RepliesJanuary 19, 2022 at 10:47 am Rob, Please disregard my last post, I just saw the picture you attached. This makes sense and is doable. I’m doing this work on the boat so space is a bit limited.Ā Thanks.

January 16, 2022 at 7:01 am Re-powering my Cummins 6bta59 370 to exact same recon model. Original fabricator of my custom exhaust riser (15 yrs/4K hrs) tells me it is in very good condition and ok to use. I am putting on new graphite gasket and bolt kit. My question is how smooth should the face flange be that meets the turbo?
2 RepliesJanuary 18, 2022 at 9:06 am Thanks much for the response Rob. A little more than 1/4″ of meat. Thinking about grinding down to smooth surface.
