Hi I am a new power boater having acquired a 1999 Mainship 30 Pilot with a 6BT-5.9m 210 hp engine. I did have a 34 sailboat for 30 + years and got fairly comfortable servicing the small 3GM 30F Yanmar. At least at first glance I find the complexity and lack of room to work a bit daunting. I have 3 questions to day (the first of many !)

    1. Zincs: How many engine zincs does this engine have ? – I have read somewhere just one and I did find a labelled zinc (see picture). I assume I will be able to size this for replacement once I remove .
    2. Exhaust: I believe I will need to replace the water heater which the PO said was not working but he didn’t know the cause. He also for some reason cut freshwater hoses to and from the heater for some reason. My question to get at the water heater I will need to remove the exhaust hose are there any tips or cautions that I should be aware of before I embark on this adventure.
    3. Type of Engine: I noted in the repair manual I got with the boat the engine is listed as light duty/recreational- what does this mean for how I should or should not operate the boat ? While I wasn’t planning to haul barges on the Chesapeake I am planning for some fairly long journeys.

Thanks for indulging these probably simpleĀ  questions!

Everything is very tight in the space- it sounds like I’ll just have to get in there and figure it out !

Here’s a shot of one of those style water heaters after I removed the sheetmetal enclosure – there are mounting feet in the front and the back.Ā  If the back bracket is secured it looks like you are going to have to pull that lift muffler.Ā  How is the access for that?Ā  Be sure all wet exhaust plumbing is properly secured well above the water line.Ā  As far as those short sections of 6inch exhaust hose, a razor knife is your friend.Ā Ā

Rob- as hopefully you can see from the attached picture there are large exhaust hoses in front of the water heater I want to replace. I am assuming it’s just a matter of removing the hose clamps and levering everything off, but having not messed with an engine this big before I wanted to make sure and see if there any tips or cautions that I should be aware of

    Thanks

    6BT 5.9 210 with a ZF63A gear

These are some pics with a very popular transmission used with this engine.

Ā  Could very well be what your Mainship has

Look at the attached over the weekend…………………………..You have a boat with one of theĀ  the best diesel engines ever made……………Just ask any 12-valve Dodge Cummins truck owner.
