I recently bought 2 6bta 330 engines one was in a charter boat with about 10k hrs and the other was his spare that had about 3k hrs. both engines look almost identical but only the 10k hr motor had the data plate/sticker on it.Ā

I got both started up on pallets and had only a few issues of concern.Ā Ā

#1 The 3k hr engine smokes (black smoke) more than the 10k hr one on start and has a way higher oil pressure. Im using a new oil filled mechanical pressure gauge in place of the oil sender at the fuel / oil block. the oil pressure is at 60-65 on cold start and climbs to 80-90psi at 12-1500 rpm.Ā  Am I correct in thinking I should be looking a the oil pressure relief valve next to the filter?Ā

#2 The engine shakes a little at around 12-1400rpm then clears up as rpm increases. Not sure if this is related to question #1, but I cracked the injector lines at the head one at a time to check and bleed air and seemed to make no difference. When cracking one at a time the engine shook a bit making me think that the injectors are probably all functioning right.

    Engine with 10k hrs question

#1 This motor didn’t smoke at all on start but sounds like there’s an air leak close to the mechanical fuel lift pump which doesn’t seem to really work. I pumped it probably 50 times and it did nothing. I do also notice a lot of air bubbles in the return fuel line while running. This engine shakes a little, not much tho… more at idle than at rpm. could the air bubbles in the return be from an air leak in the lift pump?

Pics are of both engines. the whiter more freshly painted one is the 3k hr one and the rustier one with the fuel cooler is the 10k hr .Ā

I’m very new to these engines as I’ve mostly worked with Caterpillar engines (3208). I’ve been following and reading a lot from Tony here and at BD for many many years. Any help or suggestions would be awesome and Thanks in advance!Ā Ā

OIL Pressure–The engine with the remote oil filter will always show lower OP ( sometimes noticeably) .. If you don’t need it,Ā  I’d remove the option

Until the engines are up to full temps (oil included ( 180-230FĀ  is normal) , IMO, ignore OP readings

Hopefully,Ā  you’ll clean these engines up, get rid of the things you DO NOT NEED, and go thru the entire seawater sideĀ  TOP TO BOTTOM..

Can I see insideĀ  the turbo exhaust outlet with a super good pic from about 12″ away?
