March 8, 2017 at 3:37 pm QSC-600s. First complete removal after 800 hours. Ā Fresh water flushed each time boat was to sit longer than 5 days. Ā Photos speak for themselves I believe. Ā Thanks Tony for your advice on this subject 6 years ago.Ā
1 ReplyMarch 8, 2017 at 9:06 pm Well the verdict is in!Ā Fresh water flushing works… (of course we already knew this…) Awesome!

March 4, 2017 at 3:30 pm The wiring diagram for my 1996 350CTA shows a 10 amp circuit breaker but cannot find it. it must be buried in the harness somewhere, any hints?
3 RepliesMarch 8, 2017 at 7:51 am The bracket is there but no breaker. I have had engine since delivered by cummins in 96. Nothing jumps out at me on the harness.

February 4, 2017 at 11:34 pm Hi All, Ā I am looking at a pair of QSC 540hp engines. They look to be 12V engines but my vessel is wired 24v. Other than the Starter, Alternator , lift pumpĀ Ā is there anything else? It has smart craft V1 displays listed as 12v on back. The anologue instruments are VDO/ Smartcraft rpmĀ and would need swapping orĀ run 2 smart craft displays for the engines and no analogue? The inter-phase box is pn#4929690 SW V 3.3. Next one. Ā They have sat for 6…
7 RepliesMarch 7, 2017 at 10:07 am You will need to choose the solenoids that match whatever system voltage you will be supplying… if your Glendinning is setup for 24V then your solenoids must also be 24V.

What thermostat temperature for 480 CE?

February 16, 2017 at 10:54 am Hello, I have a 2005 Sea Ray with a pair of Cummins 480 CEs, Serial Numbers 46451414 and 46451379.Ā I want to buy a thermostat kit to include in a parts kit, but I see there is a choice of 160 or 180 degrees.Ā Do these engines come with 160 t-stats from the factory?Ā Is it best to stick with that?
6 RepliesMarch 6, 2017 at 10:10 am If you are still looking here then I would also seriously look into the alarms TOny has outlined. Ā They are in his Ā tips. Ā Ā One biggee might be the exhaust alarm.

6cta 8,3 Idle drooping
This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
March 4, 2017 at 7:17 am I’ve got 8,3’s rated at 400 hp with the Nippon Denso pumps. Ā Engines are in good running order, but I’ve got a small frustration. Ā On my port engine the idle drops from 750 to around 500 when I put it in gear. Ā This worries me that I might get a stall at exactly the wrong moment while docking. Any help on how to correct this would be appreciated.
4 RepliesMarch 6, 2017 at 5:37 am Thanks Tony, I’ll give this a try during the week. Ā Will be sure to get the engine reasonably warm prior to the attempt.

ZF 325 IV shift question

December 9, 2016 at 7:02 pm Hi Tony, Hi Rob, I need to find written instructions regarding the “manual” shifting of my ZF 325IV gears. If you can point me in the right direction, I’d appreciate it. I’ve searched the internet, you tube, etc, etc. Can’t find anything, but I know it can be done. The reason I need to know is because a friend of mine was running about 100 miles offshore when his captain was not able to shift his port side ZF gear i…
3 RepliesMarch 3, 2017 at 7:57 pm Hi Tony,Ā I was just now able to get back to the boat and had a meeting with my Cummins mechanic. He gave me instructions on how to put my gear into F/R manually. I wanted thank you for your response.Ā Thank you,Ā Tom Mann Bow Tie

Injectors
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
February 28, 2017 at 4:09 am Hi, our cummins mechanic in Belgium told us that if the engines run well and smooth we don’t need to check the injectors and said: when everything is going fine , start trying to remove the injectors could be worse….. What do you think? 6bta 330 1000h 20 years old…Ā Thank you
2 RepliesFebruary 28, 2017 at 9:02 am Yes, the bayliner dealer where we bought the boat is also a very good mechanic and change parts that really need to. He change the belts when it is necessary and not with the engines hours… One good thing is that he cleaned the heat exchanger last season, it was really necessary…I touch wood, the engines have been trouble free since new.

Fuel selinoid fail 6 BTAHaving
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
February 18, 2017 at 6:05 pm I have an ’07 6bta 370 diamond reman. Ā After a 2 month lay up I found I had a no start situation. Ā It appears to be a problem in the 12v system. Ā My initial investigation uncovered two obvious facts. The warm air induction system had failed at some point. Ā It left behind obvious signs of very high heat at the selonoid terminals. Ā Maryland boat, don’t need it, took it off the boat. Ā Question #1: Ā Are there blank covers available …
2 RepliesFebruary 19, 2017 at 8:36 am Thank you Tony. Ā Your simple test failed to hold the selinoid open. Ā After an investigation I realized the purple hold wire was reinstalled on the wrong side of the push button start switch. Ā She starts and runs now. Ā Thanks for your insight.

Cooler cleaner or snake oil?
This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
February 18, 2017 at 9:13 am I was at a fishing show yesterday and found a product made by Maritime Expressions. It is a biodegradable descaler that the exhibiter claims can be circulated through an engine raw water system to clean scale and deposits from heat exchangers and after coolers eliminating having to disassemble.Ā Does anybody have any experience with this type of product. Tony, I would appreciate hearing you view.Ā
2 RepliesFebruary 18, 2017 at 3:57 pm My take on running a descaler through the raw water loop (Rydlyme, Barnacle Buster or any other flavor) Ā is that it is a “quick fix” to avoid downtime for when temps start to creep up in the height of the season….Get the temps down for the remainder of the season and then on layup pull the coolers for the proper “on-bench” servicing. February 8, 2017 at 9:23 pm Well, we sold our 2002 SeaRay 400 Sedan Bridge.Ā Great Boat, Engines have been wonderful…so we thought.Ā On the Sea Trial, the Mechanic found that both engines had both blown head gaskets, both inter coolers must be cologged becasue of the heat issues, and turbo boost on one of them…all at 750 hours.Ā So if we break it down one at a time, heopfully I can post the video’s for the Head Gaskets.Ā What’s weird is that it̵…

February 14, 2017 at 3:43 pm Ā I have a 350 SeaRay repowered with Ā Cummins 6BT 370. Ā Had a couple of broken valve springs when I bought it. Ā Pulled head and had it reworked. Ā After installing and running in slip for several hours, took it our for a sea trial. Ā Ran great. Ā Next day when to crank it, and it pushed oil out the dip stick. Ā Water in the oil. Ā First thought, head gasket. Ā No loss of coolant so that’s not it. Ā Next thought aftercooler. Ā Serviced it while the …
2 RepliesFebruary 15, 2017 at 5:28 am Ā Thanks for the input. Ā I am suspect of the design of the exhaust especially with the 90 degree turn before going in the muffler. Ā Classic make the engine fit when the boat was repowered with diesels. Ā On my off days I will pull the elbow and take some pictures of the exhaust exit at the turbo. Ā On a redesign, my thoughts were to remount the muffler, or fiberglass and relocate the inlet so that the inlet were at more of straight in approach from…

February 13, 2017 at 5:19 pm Cummins QSB 5.9L 380 engine.Ā This boat is relatively new to me and I had the aftercooler serviced by a shop not too long after I took possession.Ā At that time, the mechanic replaced the engine zincs when reinstalling the aftercooler.Ā He ended up using some type of thread sealant on the threads.Ā My question is basic, what type of thread sealant can be used if I find that the plugs leak at the specified torque?

37 Riviera Stop Switch wiring for QSB 5.9
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
February 9, 2017 at 4:04 pm One of the stop switches for our Riviera does not appear to be connected. The side that is connected works just fine.Ā Ā Ā I am shutting down both engines currently by switching off the “ignition” switches.Ā Ā There is some wiring that was not connected to anything (loose in the console) near the disconnected switch that looks as though it is part of that circuitry, but the conduit does not have a label.Ā Ā The wiring for the working sid…
3 RepliesFebruary 14, 2017 at 9:34 am Your logic is sound… if the wire was loose which left the circuit OPEN, then engine would never run. It would be nice to see a picture of the opposite side of the switch panel too so I can see what buttons/switches you have. With a voltmeter and some time, youĀ should be able to sort it out… especially since you have a side that is currently functional.

Aftercoolers 16 Years Later

February 3, 2017 at 8:43 am Both engines (330B’s / CPL 1975) were new installs in the winter offseason of 2001/2002. Unfortunately this puts them into that timeframe (late 90’s – early 2000’s) when Cummins used the AL finned cores….not good.Ā But prior owner was a Seaboard customer and follower of Tony’s Tips and he believed in a very proactive maintenance approach.Ā This was a major factor back in 2014 when I bought the boat from him.Ā …
1 ReplyFebruary 13, 2017 at 7:35 am Put the aftercoolers back together yesterday. The pictures and captions should speak for themselves.. Will pressure check them one night this week.

Envirovent CCV Kit

February 9, 2017 at 5:16 am A few months ago I purchased the Seaboard Envirovent kits for my Cummins ‘B’ motors, the result was nothing short of sensationalā¦ The motors (originally fitted with Walker Airseps from new) both leaked oil from the Airsep’s and had a tendency to push the dipstick up and spray misted oil from that area. I stuck with them for nearly one thousand hours thinking they where what Cummins installed and they had to be the right thingā¦ G…

January 3, 2017 at 6:41 pm Hi All, I am looking for advice on upgrading the fuel pump and injectors on my 1995 6BT 5.9L 180hp, the engine is currently being disassembled and rebuilt. During this process I am looking to add a few more horsepower and better performance with a larger fuel pump and upgraded injectors. I prefer to limit the modifications of the coolers and stay within the limits of the current engine. (serial number 45257807) Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks…
2 RepliesFebruary 1, 2017 at 7:29 am Tony, thanks again for the good advice and information. One clarifying question, Cummins (CPL0742)Ā has a factory injector openingĀ settingĀ at 3650 psi, Currently my injectors are set at opening 4200 psi, any concern with the higher opening pressure? From my original question I was looking for extra output of the injection pump and injectors for engine performance. My Lucas/Cav pump has now been completely overhauled and rebuilt it is now been tes…

Oil leak help

January 31, 2017 at 3:38 pm I found this after my last run. Starboard side. It is directly in line with the dipstick location, but on the other side where there is just a plug.Ā The plug does appear to be leaking. It only leaks when running, which I am attributing to oil sloshing, boat angle, etc.Ā Is there a specific part number to replace a seal, or is it just a tighten it up deal? It appears to be quite a bit of oil. Ā There appears to be no additional leaking. Runs fine…
3 RepliesFebruary 1, 2017 at 6:02 am Thats exactly what i was looking for. Ā Thank you. Is the oil level at rest over that bolt, or can that be swapped without draining.Ā
