Gear cooling unit leaking water
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
April 5, 2017 at 3:06 pm On a 2004 Cummins 270 (@200 hours)Ā the gear cooling unit drips water, even when the engine has not been operated for a long time. First question is, where does the water come from if the water pump is not operating? Second is, is it usual for this unit to leak? It’s a new-to-me boat.
1 ReplyApril 5, 2017 at 5:14 pm The various seawater components on every engine Ā drain down differently depending on the geometry of how they are installed and the hoses connected to them. I don’t think there’s any way any of us can get an idea of what your issue may or may not be without good pictures so we can see what you are seeing ā¦ā¦

Gear Cooler Leaking Oil
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
April 4, 2017 at 9:03 am My Cummins QSB 5.9 gear cooler is leaking oil from a 45 degree elbow on the oil inlet or outlet. You can see the oil on the elbow in the attached photo. Before I start messing with the elbow and hoses, I thought I should post here and see if it’s ok to just start trying to simply tighten the elbow. My hesitation to just put a wrench to things comes from the red paint marks showing on the inlet and outlet hoses. I’m betting these pain…

Qsm11 oil capacity

April 4, 2017 at 8:23 am just would like a clear answer on the actual capacity in a new to me qsm 670 .i am look for the total capacity with filter
3 RepliesApril 4, 2017 at 2:22 pm Derek, You CANNOT measure or gauge TOTAL SYSTEM capacity.. You can only measure OIL PAN Capacity, engine off sitting at the dock Ā The number for you engie are in the ling–DO NOT exceed thouse on your engine as it is very susceptible to oil pan windage or “oil whipping” and can turn the oil into a milkshake– IMO, the sump on the QSM ( front sump) design is backwards for 90+% of the boat out there.. Aftercooler Cleaning
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
April 3, 2017 at 7:03 am Pulled after coolers, heat exchangers and oil coolers on my 370Bs. Ā Cooler cores where easily removed, pushed out by hand with no effort. Ā There was corrosion and more than I was hoping to see on the port cooler. Ā I cleaned everything up and have a couple of question. Ā After sanding the cooler housing does it need to be perfectly smooth (see picture) and does it have be re coated. Ā Not sure if the black finish is a coating or anodized. Ā The …
3 RepliesApril 4, 2017 at 2:08 pm On both cores dry fit them in the housings, center them with even amount protruding through the housing at both ends, Ā and look at where the o-rings sit, that is the sealing surface area that you need to get smooth. Ā If brazed, machining should not be required, you can use the housing for checking fit as you sand smooth.

Knocking Noise
This topic has 4 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
March 31, 2017 at 2:44 pm One of my new QSB 6.7 550 engines makes a very distinct noise audible at idle up to about 1000 rpms that sounds sort of like the old fashioned “Diesel knock.” It is loud enough to be heard above the other engine noises but not much. It goes away immediately if the engine is put in gear. Ā The other engine does not make the sound, nor did the pair of QSB 6.7s I had on my old boat. The Cummins Atlantic people have had the diagnostic com…
4 RepliesApril 3, 2017 at 8:58 am Thanks. Ā I asked the mechanic and apparently one of the things they tried was to unplug the fuel pressure sensor, which puts the pump to default mode of 12,000lbs. He also overrode the actuator raised the pressure to 24,000lbs. Ā Neither of those changed the noise. Ā Of course that is not the same as replacing those components but I wonder if what he did would have demonstrated a fault?

March 23, 2017 at 4:36 pm I have a pair of 480CE (s/n 46484363 and 46484197)Ā Ā in a SeaRay 420 Sundancer, and I noticed pieces of hard plastic or rubber under the belt guard of the engines.Ā I had the belts replaced, and they were fine(not the reason for pieces).Ā My mechanic and I are at a loss as he does not see where they are coming from as well.Ā Any advice?
9 RepliesMarch 30, 2017 at 5:31 am Clark, Yes Sir the oil pads were there, that’s actually how I noticed the pieces.Ā Both engines started shedding the pieces within a couple hours of each other. Thanks, Matt

Starter staying engaged

March 25, 2017 at 8:39 am Recently my port engine starter will stay engaged upon starting, the engine will not shut off with the key and I have to turn of the battery switched to kill engine. Also now when I cut the power to the engine in takes several seconds to shut down. I have changed the relay switch but the problem still is there. Someone mentioned the possibility of a bad diode in the fuel shut off system. I have also swapped the fuel shutoff solenoids and the pro…

Repower Albemarle 360 with QSM 11's?
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
March 26, 2017 at 9:35 am Hello All, I have a 2008 Albemarle 36 with the Cummins 8.3 540’s. The previous owner was overpropped and ran the boat that way for 6 years. Although there are no imminent signs of failure or major issues, im starting to think about a repower. Ideally id want the biggest engines possible (within reason of course) Ā My question is, can I get the QSM 11’s in there and roughly how much would 2 recons be vs QSC 600’s? Thank you for y…
1 ReplyMarch 26, 2017 at 1:45 pm not cheap. Ā I got one in the NE last summer north of 45K. Ā How far north is a private discussion should you be interested,… i tuink you will also also have some significant issues with increased gear and shaft size requirements.

February 3, 2017 at 4:55 pm hola have cummins 60236284 any special tricks/tools needed to remove fuel pump? do u have vacuum gauge and fuel pressure gauge in your store? many thanx frank pallares
6 RepliesMarch 23, 2017 at 4:43 pm I know this is old thread but just for “others” that may read in the future I just can not stress enough that “AIR” leaks in the system are INVISIBLE to the eye and you may have one and NOT know it.Ā ALL lines BEFORE the lift pump are VACUUM and may not leak fuel that you can see, they usually will leak air INTO the line that you cannot see and may only do it under heavy load so at the dock you may not be able to diagnose…

Coolant steam in exhaust, 6CTA

March 23, 2017 at 4:48 am Several weeks ago I had a brief (2 min) overheat, but the engine did get up there (260+). I noticed it before I had any symptoms of power loss or degradation in performance. The cause ofĀ the overheat is solved now, and the head gasket has been replaced because of leakage caused by the overheat. After putting it all back together there is more damage that needs to be solved. The engine heats up faster than the other side. It will take the good si…

March 21, 2017 at 8:20 pm I have a trouble with one of my QSC’s 8.3L (twin engine), it does not want to start. I have changed the lift/prime pump , swapped sensors from the good engine and still nothing , including the actuator.Changed filters and checked fuses. March 20, 2017 at 8:51 am Where does a QSL store its engine hours? Ā In the ECM or in the Tach? Ā If a used vessel view display (with say 7000 hours on it, from a previous engine) got plugged into a QSL ECM with 1200 hours on it what would show up for engine hours on the Vessel View?
1 ReplyMarch 20, 2017 at 2:43 pm Engine hours are stored in the engine computer and cannot be changed… the correct hours will be displayed regardless of which panel you install

Double Double filtration

March 20, 2017 at 6:24 am Ā Hi Guys, I have had a double double system on the boat for two years now works great love the vacuum gauges! Ā Was doing the Annual winter maintenance and remembered that Brad had said to me that its typical to use 2/1 ratio of mud filters to the finer 1000 filters. Ā This made me wonder if I was doing the right thing at the annual maintenance by replacing all the filters in the fuel system? Ā (This is what I did last year) So my question i…

Cool down time
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
March 20, 2017 at 10:24 am On my QSC8.3-540’s during a normal cruise I see engine coolant temps of 172. I can run for a two hour run and the temps never budge. Temps cool down as soon as I come off plane as expected. I idle into the harbor and get into my slip.Ā My question is not cooling system related per se, rather I wonder how long should I idle and let things cool down before shutting down? Once tied up at the dock I see temps at 158 so I am sitting on t…
1 ReplyMarch 20, 2017 at 1:12 pm You really do not have to give this too much thought. Ā The turbos is coolant jacket cooled so the normal course of coming back to the slip (no wake zones, docking, securing the lines) is a built in cool down. Ā Same thing with motoring into an anchorage or the like. Ā The only time I have even thought about it was setting down to rest from cruise in open water and then I do let her idle a good 5 minutes or so. Ā A dry turbo would run much hotter an…

Possible leaking aftercooler
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
March 14, 2017 at 11:26 am So I might have an aftercooler that is starting to leak. I am removing them and will have them pressure tested BEFORE I disassemble and service them to see if they are leaking. See attached picture and area highlighted in Red outline. Of course I will get them back in service after a full and proper service including post assembly pressure testing to confirm we are 100%. The question I have is IF they have been leaking and some amount of salt wa…
3 RepliesMarch 15, 2017 at 9:08 am If you suspected an issue with the amount of salt mist you could look inside the air intake plenum of the intake manifold and also remove any port plugs in the IM and inspect the base of the plugs for any rusting as an indicator. Ā After that it’s pulling the head to address the valves. Ā Just to confirm, this is “for the sake of discussion” as you asked, not a recommendation in your case. Not aware of any cleaning methods, just …
