    • Gear cooling unit leaking water

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 7 years ago

April 5, 2017 at 3:06 pm On a 2004 Cummins 270 (@200 hours)Ā the gear cooling unit drips water, even when the engine has not been operated for a long time. First question is, where does the water come from if the water pump is not operating? Second is, is it usual for this unit to leak? It’s a new-to-me boat.

    • Gear Cooler Leaking Oil

April 4, 2017 at 9:03 am My Cummins QSB 5.9 gear cooler is leaking oil from a 45 degree elbow on the oil inlet or outlet. You can see the oil on the elbow in the attached photo. Before I start messing with the elbow and hoses, I thought I should post here and see if it’s ok to just start trying to simply tighten the elbow. My hesitation to just put a wrench to things comes from the red paint marks showing on the inlet and outlet hoses. I’m betting these pain…

April 4, 2017 at 2:22 pm Derek,   You CANNOT measure or gauge TOTAL SYSTEM capacity.. You can only measure OIL PAN Capacity, engine off sitting at the dock Ā The number for you engie are in the ling–DO NOT exceed thouse on your engine as it is very susceptible to oil pan windage or “oil whipping” and can turn the oil into a milkshake– IMO, the sump on the QSM ( front sump) design is backwards for 90+% of the boat out there..   Tony

April 3, 2017 at 7:03 am Pulled after coolers, heat exchangers and oil coolers on my 370Bs. Ā  Cooler cores where easily removed, pushed out by hand with no effort. Ā  There was corrosion and more than I was hoping to see on the port cooler. Ā I cleaned everything up and have a couple of question. Ā  After sanding the cooler housing does it need to be perfectly smooth (see picture) and does it have be re coated. Ā Not sure if the black finish is a coating or anodized. Ā  The …

April 4, 2017 at 2:08 pm On both cores dry fit them in the housings, center them with even amount protruding through the housing at both ends, Ā and look at where the o-rings sit, that is the sealing surface area that you need to get smooth. Ā If brazed, machining should not be required, you can use the housing for checking fit as you sand smooth.

March 31, 2017 at 2:44 pm One of my new QSB 6.7 550 engines makes a very distinct noise audible at idle up to about 1000 rpms that sounds sort of like the old fashioned “Diesel knock.” It is loud enough to be heard above the other engine noises but not much. It goes away immediately if the engine is put in gear. Ā The other engine does not make the sound, nor did the pair of QSB 6.7s I had on my old boat. April 3, 2017 at 8:58 am Thanks. Ā I asked the mechanic and apparently one of the things they tried was to unplug the fuel pressure sensor, which puts the pump to default mode of 12,000lbs. He also overrode the actuator raised the pressure to 24,000lbs. Ā Neither of those changed the noise. Ā Of course that is not the same as replacing those components but I wonder if what he did would have demonstrated a fault?

March 20, 2017 at 1:12 pm You really do not have to give this too much thought. Ā The only time I have even thought about it was setting down to rest from cruise in open water and then I do let her idle a good 5 minutes or so. Ā A dry turbo would run much hotter an…
