What thermostat temperature for 480 CE?

Hello, I have a 2005 Sea Ray with a pair of Cummins 480 CEs, Serial Numbers 46451414 and 46451379.  I want to buy a thermostat kit to include in a parts kit, but I see there is a choice of 160 or 180 degrees.  Do these engines come with 160 t-stats from the factory?  Is it best to stick with that?

If you are still looking here then I would also seriously look into the alarms TOny has outlined.   They are in his  tips.    One biggee might be the exhaust alarm.

Bareboat charters… Well that adds a bit of uncertainty as to how the vessel is operated. I’d stay with the 160s

Not exactly propped on the edge, running slightly below the 450C fuel curve with four adults on board, full fuel and water tanks.  The boat is used for bareboat charters on Chesapeake Bay, so I like prepare for the worst/assume going out heavy.

Your propping and cruising style come into play here. If you’re propped light and cruise light, you could switch out to the 180’s…. If you’re propped on the edge and like to run there, then stay at 160.

Factory stats

Factory stats for those engines are 71C or 160F… stick with the factory stats.
