    • Replace external parts on ZF 220A

This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byJeff Hanna 2 years ago

November 1, 2021 at 11:12 am Previous owner was extremely negligent on maintenance. I have stripped the 6BTAs down to the block for rust removal, prime, paint. All new aftercoolers, cores and turbos as well. The ZF 220A on the port side took the brunt of an obvious seawater leak from the packing gland. I will send actual photos of my gear when I get back to the boat. However, everything in this picture of a new gear that is red/maroon is a corroded, rusted mess. Is it possi…

October 31, 2021 at 9:43 pm Hi Tony I am installing active fins and the wiring wants to connect to a revers switch. Is the a place to install a reverse switch and is this something you can supply? I guess i am thinking like a regular transmission with backup lights. Thanks for all you guys help. Rod

November 1, 2021 at 7:19 pm Rod, You got me on this one.. I am assumming “fins” mean stabiliizers, or ??.. Your ZF85 gears–Mechanical or electric shift? If electric and you are “DC Electric 101” qualified, this should be easy..If mechanical gear controls, then you’ll need to be good at dealing with some monkey motions too.. .. Nothing will be “off the shelf” unless I have been asleep for quite a few years..

October 26, 2021 at 5:30 pm Hello! I recently bought a tiara express 3500 that has 6CTA 450 diamonds and ZF 302vld transmissions.. I have been performing all possible preventative maintenance on the motors and transmissions to try to avoid big problems.. For the transmissions I did change the oil with SAE30 and new spin on filters ordered from here.. I did not clean the mesh filters when I did this oil change, is this something I can do without draining the oil? Are these …

October 28, 2021 at 10:10 am The ZF302IV (VLD) is a very well made gear. However, it is no longer made and is a tad tricky to rebuild unless you have a lot of past ZF experience, so treat it well…. Yes you can clean the filter with a minimum of oil loss. As to OIL pressure– I’d check use a quality mechanical gauge before you worry..

    • ZF 220 A – Shift solenoid

This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 2 years ago

October 15, 2021 at 10:14 am Second time in 6 months. Need a path forward please. In April had to replace EB15 12V shift solenoids. Replaced both with new in April. Today had same thing happen again. When I touched the solenoid it was super HOT. Cooled down, put in gear manually and came back in. What can be the main cause for this happening again? If its from debris in system? Will the coil/solenoid be ok after heating up?

October 8, 2021 at 10:55 am Hi everyone, The concern: All I have showing between the prop shaft coupler and the dripless is about 2 1/2″ inches of shaft. Although I could pull the engines forward about 2 inches more. for a total of about 4-4 1/2″ inches of wiggle between the ZF coupler surface and the prop shaft coupler. With the come-alongs I should be able to work on one engine at a time getting the aluminum angles to stringers in the correct po…

October 7, 2021 at 6:34 pm I would check all the bolts for the coupling, that they are tight. Also check that the engine mount nuts are secure. Maybe put a mark on the gear/engine mount to see if anything moves. This is just to be sure they are not contributing.

September 14, 2021 at 6:23 am It’s difficult to buy the coupling failing as they either transmit power (rotation) or they do not– Not much in-between. Pumps can wear internally–The gears are steel and the housing is aluminum– If a piece of trash get inside the pump, is can groove the housing–But I do not think that is the issue.. I would be more inclined to thing you have worn or broken piston rings. There are 4 of them in the gear and can be s…

September 12, 2021 at 3:41 pm Knocking this one back to the top for suggestions. Tony, Do you see any issues with the spool valve below. There was not any corrosion that was preventing the control lever from engaging completely in the forward and reverse position. I have replaced the breather valve on top of the gear but not had a chance to run it to see if these changes made a difference. Let me know what you see, if anything in the attached. Thanks
