Replace external parts on ZF 220A
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
November 1, 2021 at 11:12 am Previous owner was extremely negligent on maintenance. I have stripped the 6BTAs down to the block for rust removal, prime, paint. All new aftercoolers, cores and turbos as well. The ZF 220A on the port side took the brunt of an obvious seawater leak from the packing gland. I will send actual photos of my gear when I get back to the boat. However, everything in this picture of a new gear that is red/maroon is a corroded, rusted mess. Is it possi…

zf85a reverse switch
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
October 31, 2021 at 9:43 pm Hi Tony I am installing active fins and the wiring wants to connect to a revers switch. Is the a place to install a reverse switch and is this something you can supply? I guess i am thinking like a regular transmission with backup lights. Thanks for all you guys help. Rod
1 ReplyNovember 1, 2021 at 7:19 pm Rod, You got me on this one.. I am assumming “fins” mean stabiliizers, or ??.. Your ZF85 gears–Mechanical or electric shift? If electric and you are “DC Electric 101” qualified, this should be easy..If mechanical gear controls, then you’ll need to be good at dealing with some monkey motions too.. .. Nothing will be “off the shelf” unless I have been asleep for quite a few years..

ZF IRM 302 vld
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
October 26, 2021 at 5:30 pm Hello! I recently bought a tiara express 3500 that has 6CTA 450 diamonds and ZF 302vld transmissions.. I have been performing all possible preventative maintenance on the motors and transmissions to try to avoid big problems.. For the transmissions I did change the oil with SAE30 and new spin on filters ordered from here.. I did not clean the mesh filters when I did this oil change, is this something I can do without draining the oil? Are these …
1 ReplyOctober 28, 2021 at 10:10 am The ZF302IV (VLD) is a very well made gear. However, it is no longer made and is a tad tricky to rebuild unless you have a lot of past ZF experience, so treat it well…. Yes you can clean the filter with a minimum of oil loss. As to OIL pressure– I’d check use a quality mechanical gauge before you worry..

ZF 220 A – Shift solenoid
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
October 15, 2021 at 10:14 am Second time in 6 months. Need a path forward please. In April had to replace EB15 12V shift solenoids. Replaced both with new in April. Today had same thing happen again. When I touched the solenoid it was super HOT. Cooled down, put in gear manually and came back in. What can be the main cause for this happening again? If its from debris in system? Will the coil/solenoid be ok after heating up?
1 ReplyOctober 16, 2021 at 10:20 am Post some good pictures of the gear and solenoids–Not too close up.. I want to “see” it all.. Your engine–12VDC or 24VDC??

R & R a Hurth HSW 800V Transmission

October 7, 2021 at 10:31 am Looks like I need to Remove & Reinstall the 800V transmission to be able to replace the rear main oil seal on the 5.9 Cummins. Looking for any helpful hints on how to go about this. Looks like the tran & engine needs to be lifted a good 2″ to clear the mounting studs to be able to separate. Planning on making a screw jack, one fastened on each side of the engine block using a L plate bolted to existing 1/2 ” threaded holes. T…

damper plate rubbing on gear

October 11, 2021 at 11:52 am IĀ“m having interference problems with a cummins 6bta and velvet drive. The damper plate (velvet drive) is rubbing against the gear (velvet drive 72C). Almost like there is supposed to be a gasket or shim between the adapter plate and the gear. Any help would be appreciated. D

Ultra short U joint between ZF and Prop shaft?
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
October 8, 2021 at 10:55 am Hi everyone, The concern: All I have showing between the prop shaft coupler and the dripless is about 2 1/2″ inches of shaft. Although I could pull the engines forward about 2 inches more. for a total of about 4-4 1/2″ inches of wiggle between the ZF coupler surface and the prop shaft coupler. Is there a universal joint available that would be no more than 4″ overall face to face that I can fit in there to help with some misali…
2 RepliesOctober 8, 2021 at 1:20 pm Thank Gene, Since the engines are and will stay in the boat, I will be welding up some over-engine beam supports with come-alongs. The idea is to have two 3″ beams (one forward and one aft) supported outboard of the stringers with some steel legs (A frames) that I can assemble and disassemble in the engine room. With the come-alongs I should be able to work on one engine at a time getting the aluminum angles to stringers in the correct po…

ZF 220A-1 Noisy in Reverse
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
September 29, 2021 at 12:52 pm twin 6bta 370’s with ZF IRM 220A-1 1.75:1 gears when going into reverse, I get noisy operation for the first second or two. seems like it’s getting worse. used to be just for a moment, now the moment seems to be getting longer. I wouldn’t describe it as grinding but maybe more shuddering. also, this gear runs at higher pressure than the starboard according to the dash gauges (starboard runs ~350psi, port pegs gauge at over …
1 ReplyOctober 7, 2021 at 6:34 pm I would check all the bolts for the coupling, that they are tight. Also check that the engine mount nuts are secure. Maybe put a mark on the gear/engine mount to see if anything moves. This is just to be sure they are not contributing.

ZF 220A Continued Low Oil Pressure
This topic has 5 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
September 20, 2021 at 5:15 am Replaced pump, replace oil cooler, replaced vent/pressure valve, cleaned oil screen, used wire to ensure oil pickups in screen housing were not clogged, ensured trolling valve and gear levers all in correct position, pulled spool valve (pics below), changed oil to use Rotella T4 Triple Protection (ZF says acceptable), replaced oil pressure sending unit (same reading). No leak present at shaft coupler. There does appear to be a leak beneath the…

ZF 220a Low Pressure Issue
This topic has 16 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
September 6, 2021 at 2:46 pm Okay, I’m stumped. Had the gear running lower pressures in the 220-250 range. Slipped once at cruise and came off immediately. Anyway, here is what I’ve done and the issues I still have. (1) Cleaned oil screen; (2) Replaced oil with Rotella T4 Triple Protection 15w-40, ZF says approved oil. (3) Replaced oil pump; (4) Replaced oil cooler; (5) Replaced sending unit for oil pressure on gear. One last thing to know. I have a tro…
16 RepliesSeptember 21, 2021 at 10:58 am One last question – what is the plug in the photo? Looks like it is leaking. While I have the control block off, is there a way to seal this? It sits just beneath the oil screen but does not appear to have a way to back it out – no hex head or anything.

zf irm220a no oil pressure

September 7, 2021 at 11:59 am I have the following issue with a ZF IRM 220A serial number 2205800 attached to caterpillar 3216B serial 1ZJ03460 (sorry not cummins, I know you are a cummins guys). My problem is half pressure at idle ( I can rev and get almost 3/4 way on gauge (it usually pegs)). I put into either gear and lose pressure, no bounce back and no gear. There is a high pitch wine that was only in gear at first, now it does in neutral after running for about 15 m…
3 RepliesSeptember 14, 2021 at 6:23 am It’s difficult to buy the coupling failing as they either transmit power (rotation) or they do not– Not much in-between. Pumps can wear internally–The gears are steel and the housing is aluminum– If a piece of trash get inside the pump, is can groove the housing–But I do not think that is the issue.. I would be more inclined to thing you have worn or broken piston rings. There are 4 of them in the gear and can be s…

ZF 220a Low Pressure Issue Part 2
This topic has 1 reply, has 1 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
September 12, 2021 at 3:41 pm Knocking this one back to the top for suggestions. Tony, Do you see any issues with the spool valve below. There was not any corrosion that was preventing the control lever from engaging completely in the forward and reverse position. I have replaced the breather valve on top of the gear but not had a chance to run it to see if these changes made a difference. Let me know what you see, if anything in the attached. Thanks

ZF gearbox ratio
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
September 1, 2021 at 6:14 pm Hi guys I have a 40 express with Cummins 480ās and a pair of ZF 280-1A gearboxes. Boat runs great at 1980 rpm at about 20 kts full load at around 40k lbs, burn the typical 12.6 gph a side at that speed in a good sea, and up at 2200-2230 I can see around 23 kts at 15 gph a side, so I know Iām propped correctly. Iām wondering if anyone has installed new gear boxes with a higher ratio for more top end speed? I have all electronic shift and throttle…

ZF 220A Questions
This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
August 30, 2021 at 10:54 am Couple questions and interested in thoughts with gear issue. (1) When running, pressure rises to appropriate level and after running for a few minutes goes down to 230-250 psi on guage. Had transmission slip at cruise, immediately backed off. Ultimately looked like I needed to add a little oil, boat ran fine but pressure stayed low. No obvious leaks. (2) At idle, pressure is also low and below specs. (3) Oil looks good, no smell, looks lik…
5 RepliesAugust 31, 2021 at 1:03 pm It is the newer version gear oil pump assembly, not the one with the arm that sticks out for the filter screen. Relief valve does not look like any oil has come out. Not sure if that helps or not.

Transmission Pressure gauges

July 26, 2021 at 4:31 am I purchased your transmission gauges 400psi and 400psi sending units and installed. I attached the white wire from the gauge panel to sending terminal on gauge. I used the white and black wire from the engine wiring harness to the sending unit. On engine start up the gauge goes to like 350 not in gear. HELP

Which Torsional Coupling?
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
July 24, 2021 at 7:31 am I have QSC8.3 600 HO and ZF 286A. Hrs 1,600 in recreational use. Small rubber bits being ejected. Which coupler is the right replacement one? Is the “Centa CF-R Torsional Coupling ZF 285 286 A/IV” the only choice?
1 ReplyJuly 24, 2021 at 9:30 am There are 3 types that were used.. Centa CF-DS, Vukardan E, and the Centa CFR…….I have seen all 3 of them fail at relatively low hours. With “bits” coming out, most likely the CF-DS 1st, the CFR 2nd.. We usually stock all 3 types.. You need to take it apart for a good peek to ID it.. Tony

ZF220 A Rebuild
This topic has 6 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
July 3, 2021 at 3:22 am Good Morning Just about finished rebuilding one of my ZF 220A gears that are behind my 6BTAs. I believe it was cooler failure that led to oil loss while underpower Anyhow. Assured all measurements were as required in the manual but with the case on and no oil i am not sure i like how much work it is to spin the input shaft (shaft that goes into dampner). I know theres no oil in it yet but the output shaft is much easier to spin. Wondering if…

Zf220 output flange failure
This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
June 10, 2021 at 12:08 pm Hey good afternoon, Was out fishing today setting out baits. Heard a pop and discovered the output flange on the gear side has failed. Wanting to see if anyone has ever come across this certain issue and why it May have happened and what My next move is!? Thank you
4 RepliesJune 13, 2021 at 7:17 pm Youāre correct, unless the stringers are moving, the strut is the next most likely candidate for the misalignment, although there may be a bearing in the stern tube as well. Anyway, time to set it all straight. Tony has some good articles in the āTipsā section on this website, a good read even if you already know how to set it up. I like hard mounting the motor, as long as everythingās rock solid, you can align to 0, and expect it to stay that…

Twin Disc 502″s
This topic has 4 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
June 11, 2021 at 9:13 pm Tony; Just purchased 2 used twin disc 502’s 2:1 trannies. After scrapping off the name plate found that this one was a LH 502. Will this have any effect on my 5.9 standard cummins diesels. The other tranny has no name pate so i dont know if it is a LH OR RH unit. Does it even matter. Can I have the other unit spin tested to find out if it is LH OR RH.
4 RepliesJune 12, 2021 at 12:36 pm Not cost effectively, and NO…Understand these gears have been obsolete for over 40 years now……………. What is the gear ratio? I may have what you need in my warehouse.. Drop me a note off line.
