ZF 220A-1 Noisy in Reverse

twin 6bta 370’s with ZF IRM 220A-1 1.75:1 gears

when going into reverse, I get noisy operation for the first second or two. seems like it’s getting worse. used to be just for a moment, now the moment seems to be getting longer. I wouldn’t describe it as grinding but maybe more shuddering. also, this gear runs at higher pressure than the starboard according to the dash gauges (starboard runs ~350psi, port pegs gauge at over 400psi).

my plan is to change the oil and check the screen filter…is there anything else I should do before/while doing that?

I would check all the bolts for the coupling, that they are tight.
Also check that the engine mount nuts are secure.
Maybe put a mark on the gear/engine mount to see if anything moves.

This is just to be sure they are not contributing.
