May 30, 2017 at 10:45 am In the below picture, is the port which I would use for oil pressure monitoring during trolling valve operation circled in red correct? I assume I am looking to monitor the oil pressure to the clutch plates? And if this is the correct port is it a 1/8 NPT or some other thread? What would be the operating max pressure I would see and what rating hose should I use?

    • Gear oil for Hurth HSW 800 V1 (ZF)

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 6 years ago

May 30, 2017 at 11:14 pm Hi all, Simple question. I have two Hurth HSW 800 V1 (pre ZF), 1.6 ratio. Which oil is preferred ? Oil is a jungle and manual I have is for the later ZF versions stating just Dexron II or III. I can get the “Castrol Transmax Dex III multivehicle” for a good price. Is this a preferred oil for this gearbox ?

May 26, 2017 at 7:58 am If you prop ( impeller) your engine to make the governor break point of about 2890 RPM, then the ZF220 will give you good long term service and to its HP & torque capabilities even in heavy duty high annual hour service.. Tony

April 27, 2017 at 3:19 pm Totally missed this post……Sorry……………   The ZF220A needs at least #6 hyd hose with a minimum of a 2000 PSI WP rating for safety (SAE R1 or equal).. We prefer to use JIC #8 fittings even if use #6 hose(very common) .. #8 hose is also fine.   Tony

    • ZF80A High Iron in Oil

April 13, 2017 at 3:04 am We recently signed a contract to sell our boat which has Cummins 6BTA5.9’s coupled to ZF80A transmissions. The buyer had oil samples done and all were normal exept the port transmission which came back with a high iron content of 219ppm. We have only had the boat 12 months and I’ve done almost everything exept change the transmission oils on her. I do not want to sell her to the buyer in the current state if this is going to become a…

February 19, 2017 at 7:54 am I am helping someone with electric cabling concerns with putting in new Volvo D4 300’s and mating HS63AE-C transmissions. The engines have a transmission wiring harness that includes the A & B for forward and reverse but also one marked ‘rev-sensor’. From what I have found it looks like that rev-sensor connector is for trolling valve type transmissions and it is used to monitor the output shaft RPM. I think the HS63s are rea…

January 14, 2017 at 6:11 pm I am trying to locate another ZF220a in 2 to 1 , found a few zf63a’s around but haven’t ever had too much to do with them. I know from the drawings that there is a difference in the angles of 2 degrees, and a few measurement differences, but will a 63a go where a 220a come out from?? I know there will be mods to mounts and such which aren’t a problem , but the are they major or minor, and the bellhousing adapter is different, a…

January 22, 2017 at 12:44 pm I realise its a totally different gear, I was asking about the input spline as I have a new centa coupling to suit a 280, and was wondering if it will fit the 220. As I also said, I’m thinking not but don’t have the 2 to compare.

December 29, 2016 at 6:52 pm Hello all! Great forum you have here. Thought I’d ask if there was any tricks to changing the fluid in my ZF gear box. This is my first time. My understanding is: Warm up first, remove filter cover and filter, suck out old fluid through dip stick hole. Clean filter screen and replace same amount of fluid extracted with new Dextron III ATF. Check levels after brief run Here are some pics of my engine room and running gauge readings on the s…

December 30, 2016 at 7:32 pm The job was fairly easy after realizing the best suction hose access to the bottom of the gear case is through the filter hole. Ā The gears get in the way trying to snake the hose down the dipstick hole. Thank again. -Patrick

    • ZF285A – 2 questions

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byRob Schepis 7 years ago

December 11, 2016 at 9:08 pm 1. I want to remove shift and trolling solenoids to clean screens. Can I just unscrew and spray with brake cleaner? Will that be ok for the o-rings?   2. I removed the 24mm bolt just under the filter in an attempt to clean the suction screen. Oil came rushing out and it appeared to be more of a cap plug and I didn’t immediately see the suction screen. Help.     thanks in advance….

December 3, 2016 at 1:20 pm What size socket is required to remove the magnetic filter/ oil filter on a ZF280A transmission? Also socket size for the drain plug. Very difficult to get at on my boat so I want to be sure I have the correct socket on hand. Thanks, John

    • Transmission oil Results

November 15, 2016 at 5:26 am Looking at purchasing a Sea Ray Sedan Bridge 400 with ~500 hours on Cummins 6CTA engines with ZF transmissions. What is the oil change interval recommended? Oil sample results came back high on both transmissions for Iron and Copper. Ā Both were about the same with Iron at 63 ppm and Copper 495ppm. Is this normal or to be expected? Signs of an issue?

November 15, 2016 at 6:12 am A random oil sample on a properly operating gear, one with low hours, & one that has a visual oil inspection that looks clean & passes a “smell test” for anything burnt, is close to meaningless…………….Any experienced surveyor should know that, although in most cases rarely want to offer any opinions on the matter. Post some good pictures of the engines and the gear from all angles and perspectives.…

I’m actually looking for something to pump out the oil from my 6BTAs, the trans, and even coolant from my generator so I can remove the heat exchanger. Do you recommend this pump for the job? It looks like just a standard bilge pump…? Side note, found out my westerbeke 12kw generator isn’t sucking any sea water at all. Only ran it f…
