Looking at purchasing a Sea Ray Sedan Bridge 400 with ~500 hours on Cummins 6CTA engines with ZF transmissions. What is the oil change interval recommended?

Oil sample results came back high on both transmissions for Iron and Copper.  Both were about the same with Iron at 63 ppm and Copper 495ppm. Is this normal or to be expected? Signs of an issue?

A random oil sample on a properly operating gear, one with low hours, & one that has a visual oil inspection that looks clean & passes a “smell test” for anything burnt, is close to meaningless…………….Any experienced surveyor should know that, although in most cases rarely want to offer any opinions on the matter.

Post some good pictures of the engines and the gear from all angles and perspectives.. If they are good and show all, that will tell me way more than your oil sample. Plus, I’d like to ID the exact ZF gear you have.

Do an oil change –Use brand name HD 30 wt.. When you pull the plug, take a good pic on the filter screen & magnet.

What specific gear is it?  Most of the manuals state 250hrs or annually which could be a bit aggressive since the oil is not subjected to the pollutants/dilution as is the engine oil.

The tranny could just be well overdue for servicing…Do you know the real service history.  Was the filter/screen/magnet all pulled for inspection?
