    • Where is the drain plug for the Coolant 6BTA5.9

This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byJodi Cavanaugh 1 year ago

June 25, 2022 at 5:49 pm Hello, New here to the forum and to a new to me Cummins Engine. I need to change the coolant on my boat. I have two cummins engines 6bta5.9. For the life of me I can not figure out where to drain the coolant. If someone could post a pic or give me a site that can show me directly where I would so so appreciate it.

    • 6bta oil weep turbo

This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byJ Dragon 1 year ago

June 25, 2022 at 5:09 pm Noticed a very slight weep tonight at bottom of turbo. Have 10 hours on the SMX Envirovent and nothing is in the puke bottle yet (dry). 200 hours on the turbo. Plenty of spillover height. 13 quarts in the pan. By appearances it seems to be the plug at the bottom of the turbo. I’ve also read the scroll/collar where the clip is will normally weep some oil over time, but I didn’t see an obvious trail to where the oil is collecting. So is the 1”-ish…

June 22, 2022 at 4:58 pm I have the infamous 2004 QSM 11’s in a 2004 Sea Ray 500. I’ve read many of the articles and suggestions on this forum regarding the proper fix, and recognize the repairs are needed. The problem is, I am in the midwest and have a Cummins dealer in Columbia, Mo and a dealer in Springfield, MO. They are both an hour and a half away. The Columbia dealer does not have a marine tech. The Springfield, MO location is marine certified and has…

June 25, 2022 at 6:58 am Hi Larry, thanks for the help. I do have another question please.  I’ve got an outing the week end of the 4th, then hope to find someone to fix the gasket. If I run at 1000 rpms or below, how long can I do so without risking any other issue. I will only be going 4-5 miles each way. with stops in between. Thanks a bunch. Dave

    • Newer motor, low battery voltage, hours jumped by 1000

This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated byscottbade 1 year ago

June 13, 2022 at 8:44 am This one is bit baffling.  Cummins QSB 6.7, 2 years old, about 125 hours on it.  Had a battery bank go bad, so the voltage to this engine dropped below 10 volts.  I pressed the parallel button and got the motor going.  Alternator seems fine as it shows 13+ volts when running.  I changed out the bad battery bank, and the motor starts fine, but the hour meter on that motor shows 1125 instead of 125.  Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Scott

June 22, 2022 at 6:17 pm Hi All, Went to check the oil on my port engine and the whole dipstick tube (dipstick intact) broke off clean right at the block.  I have attempted threading in a 5/16″ bolt and tapping out.  The tube metal is pretty soft and the bolt just pulled out.  Image below has an easy-out in the dipstick tube.  Afraid to break the extractor and go from soft metal being stuck to gard metal being stuck.  Have put some heat on it thus far with no luck…

June 21, 2022 at 8:30 am I have 2 8D batteries in the boat. There isn’t a battery switch. I am going to put one in. Recently replaced red starter cable and red alternator cable. Both are 2/0 tinned with heat-shrinked connections.  The cables I replaced  were 1/0 SAE , taped ends of the wrong size. Each of them had at least a few spots with wire showing. <br />On a typical install, this will be my 1st, what tips can help ?

June 21, 2022 at 6:38 pm One of my Air intake heaters gets no voltage up to the heater. I do have voltage at the solenoids below. Something is not telling it to turn on. What could cause that? Also I looked all over for the 10amp fuse but I do not see it behind the aftercooler or in the harness there. Any ideas where it is on a 480ce?

Let’s see that “things look like”.  Do you have 2 circuit breakers on the engine?  Checked them both?    There is a wiring diagram for your engine on this web site

June 19, 2022 at 2:34 pm Thanks for the tip Tony. Yes, the bell housing edge that mates to the adapter plate has quite a bit of pitting. Ill make sure to paint both surfaces and apply grease to avoid electrolysis from disimilar metals when I reassemble. Should the flexplate to flywheel bolts or the adapter plate to bell  housing bolts use loctite?
