I have the infamous 2004 QSM 11’s in a 2004 Sea Ray 500. I’ve read many of the articles and suggestions on this forum regarding the proper fix, and recognize the repairs are needed. The problem is, I am in the midwest and have a Cummins dealer in Columbia, Mo and a dealer in Springfield, MO. They are both an hour and a half away. The Columbia dealer does not have a marine tech. The Springfield, MO location is marine certified and has a field representative, but is difficult to get returned calls, emails or a response. I am trying to find an independent diesel mechanic but struggling there too. The question I have is, will it be detrimental if I drive the boat with the exhaust leaks? I usually go 1/2 hour to 3/4 of an hour at a time, (1900) rpm’s, then a down time of an hour before going again. The fall period is when I am hoping for the fix unless the engines should be shut down. There are 810 hours on the engines and burn 42 gal at 1850 rpm’s. Appears reproping is in order. I’ve included photos to this message.
Thanks for any help possible.
Dave

Hi Larry, thanks for the help. I do have another question please.Ā I’ve got an outing the week end of the 4th, then hope to find someone to fix the gasket. If I run at 1000 rpms or below, how long can I do so without risking any other issue. I will only be going 4-5 miles each way. with stops in between. Thanks a bunch.

    Follow Larry’s advise.

He knows the do’s & do not’sĀ of the QSM11’s like no other and all learned on his wallet.

Propping for down the road?Ā Ā Maybe 3 – 3.5 inches of pitch over propped

    At idle, not at 1900

The issue is that once the gasket goes your blowing more soot all over the engine room, clogging your air filter and aftercooler and risking more $$$ damage.

Tony can overrule my opinion but as a user of QSMs for 10 years and having had a bunch of leaks I donā€™t think you will do much additional damage under 1000 RPMs, EGT below 600 degrees. Ā But if you try and run at 1900/21GPH your going to be ejecting constant soot into the engine room.
