QSB 5.9 Coolant drain and fill
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 1 week ago
April 27, 2024 at 1:40 pm Hello guys, I will be draining and replacing coolant on my 2005 Mainship for my first time. Ā In reviewing your technical info, you show a drain plug at the red arrow, but mine does not have a plug there. Ā I do see a plug at the other end of this tube, as shown in my photos where my finger is pointing (the next is the close up one is from underneath the tube). Ā Wondering if you can confirm if this would be the drain plug, and if you have any tips…

Qsb 5.9 belt squeak at startup
This topic has 6 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 1 month ago
April 8, 2024 at 1:01 pm Iāve read the other posts here on this topic with no luck. Every initial startup, the belt squeaks for 5-10min. Then no noises the rest of the day. Iāve Ā replaced belt, fresh water pump, raw water pump, tensioner, and alternator. Iāve noticed a lot more belt dust on that motor than the other and am at my wits end. Could the alternator be working too hard initially? It shouldnāt, as the batteries are always on the charger. I also could not find t…
6 RepliesApril 11, 2024 at 4:40 am Joe, Glad you sorted out theĀ what belt.Ā Great trick Next–Could the alternator be experiencing an abnormal draw at warmup?Ā 100% yes, but the only simple way to know is if you are monitoring battery terminalĀ voltage just before turning the key and watching it after start-up/warming up Say you are at 12.4-12.6-ish at the battery terminal and your cold alternator regulator set point is 14.0V.Ā The alternator will go t…

Constant Torque Hose Clamps
This topic has 7 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated by 1 month ago
March 27, 2024 at 9:14 am Curious if there is any specification or guidance on tightening these hose clamps.Ā My impression is that the spring needs to have some give both to tighten and loosen to allow expansion.Ā Ā Anyone have any advice vs just tightening them ‘tight’ like normal hose clamps.
7 RepliesApril 3, 2024 at 4:53 am The tool that FireIsland1 indicated shows a torque of 60 inch pounds( as pictured on amazon) which is in range favoring the higher end.Ā I will add that tool to my kit.Ā Thank you all for some good ole learning.

July 11, 2022 at 5:10 am HiĀ We have a 2006 Sea Ray MY with QSB 5.9 425 HO.Ā I am trying to determine if we have a prop pitch issue.Ā I confirmed with Cummins technical assistance that the power curve that I have is correct.Ā We are able to achieve the correct RPMs at WOT and fuel burn is within the curve.Ā However, at 2000, 2200 and 2400 fuel burn is above the curve as shown below: C&S Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Cummins Spec Sheet Actual Ā Ā DifferenceĀ Ā Ā RPM …

No oil in filter and odd oil pressure?
This topic has 11 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 5 months ago
November 26, 2022 at 4:28 pm Doing my end-of-season oil change on my QSC 8.3ās and I pulled the port on-engine oil filter and it was borderline empty! Is this something I should be concerned about? It is not a āremoteā filter, and is located right on the middle side of the engine.Ā My oil pressures all season were 52-55 PSI between both engines when running. Now theyāre 55 on starboard, 75 on port, but this is also just at idle at the docks, so maybe Port would drop down wh…
11 RepliesDecember 8, 2023 at 8:13 pm Now that you mention it. I havenāt been running the engine prior to an oil change because I have the Wolverine pan heaters on the oil pan, because the oil has been hot enough to flow well. Thatās probably why! Ā

QSB 5.9 Operating Temp 210Ā°
This topic has 10 replies, has 9 voices, and was last updated by 7 months ago
September 11, 2023 at 12:55 pm A guy I know has a 39 SeaRay with QSB 5.9 380 motors. Ā At speeds above 18 knots he gets an overheat alarm. Ā Engines are at 210Ā° at 18 knots cruise speed (verified with laser therm). Ā His mechanic tells him 210Ā° is normal for that motor and he thinks the overheat alarm is due to a bad sender. Ā The local Cummins dealer says trucks are running that motor at 210Ā° all day long. Ā Is an operating temp of 210Ā° normal for this motor? Ā 210Ā° seems high to…
10 RepliesSeptember 27, 2023 at 7:23 am He is crazy. I had that same boat, if itĀ is a Sundancer, and after servicing everything, as mentioned by Steve, I ran that boat at 25-26 mph all day long and never saw temps above 180. I bet his EGT is off the charts.

QSB 5.9 380hp prime lift pump
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
March 31, 2023 at 5:56 pm Hi there I am new to this forum. I have replaced 3 prime lift pumps on the above port motor in 7 years. There was a spare on board when I purchased the boat (Riviera 37 2008) so we are assuming one had been replaced prior. The starboard motor has never had an issue. Seems to me that there is another issue on the port motor causing these pumps to fail. I have been told the pumps are notorious at failing but this seems to be too much of a coincide…

After cooler bolts
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
March 20, 2023 at 10:11 am I was doing the after cooler service on this Diamond 330 and the core came right out. It was clearly greased last time. The bolts were another story. Two snapped after hours of effort. Trying to use an extractor cracked the housing on the one of top of the cooler cap bolts (Lower left in photo). What looks like pits/chips on the cap surface in the photo is just chips in the paint. It is in suprisingly good shape. I saw in a previous thread Tony …

Winterizing question
This topic has 3 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
October 10, 2022 at 9:03 pm Winterizing question. I have QSB 5.9 engines .Was thinking about using fresh water tank filled with pink to feed engines through strainer flush fittings to winterize. (I would attach a short hose from engine room spigot to strainers).. Has anyone done this? Any potential issues? Not sure if engine suction along with fresh water pump pressure would be ok. Side note: I did do this on the genny last year as it wasnāt pulling from the bucket and it …
3 RepliesOctober 11, 2022 at 6:19 pm Hard to picture or know how the freshwater pump plays into it but the engine will develop plenty of suction so just make sure it’s sucking what you want it to. Ā Don’t try to feed the engine anything….let it drink with its own pump.

April 4, 2022 at 3:54 am Hi After replacingĀ my start battery, the engine will not start, and I get errors on my Vessel view. DRVP input low. Emergency stop error. QSB5.9 Oil Pressure Range
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
March 28, 2022 at 4:11 pm Ā I normally cruise with my QSB5.9 running about 1500 RPM with oil pressure at this speed in the 50 – 55psi range.Ā Sunday I ran the engine up to 2520 RPM for about five minutes.Ā Oil pressure went up to 69psi at this speed.Ā When I throttled back down to 1500 RPM my oil pressure dropped to 66psi – not back to the 50-55psi range I was expecting.Ā Anything I should be worried about here? Thanks, Roy

March 22, 2022 at 6:50 pm When I removed the zinc from the bottom of my heat exchanger on my 6BTA this winter, the cap unscrewed and came out but the pencil zinc was still in the heat exchanger.
