I have 6BTAs that ran 195-200 degrees. They were always within a few degrees of each other. Higher when FL water temps are elevated in the summer. For safety, I replaced my 180 degree stats with SMX 160 degree stats. Now one engine runs cold @ 140-150 and other hot @ 195-200. Impellers are new. Fuel coolers clean. After coolers and trans oil coolers spotless. Just did heat X maintenance on engine running hot. Replaced antifreeze. Did exact same service to each engine.
Does not make sense. Laser pyro gun shows one engine runs hotter than the other. Temps same/close coming out of after and trans coolers. Exhaust water temps are similiar. In between way off.
I did not drop thermostats in hot water to check opening before install. Are there any reports of BAD thermos shipped?

“Ghost” pieces of impeller can hide in the raw water works, and even on the pump intake side.
Have you looked inside the heat exchanger? Broken off zincs can block flow there, and while there check the condition of the tubes. Go through the entire raw water circuit from intake fitting to exhaust mixer.

    160 degree thermo bad

Ran boat today way from dock. Had only run engines w/o load at dock before.

Under light load @2100 rpm Starboard engine went to 160 and stayed there. Port engine went over 210 degrees so went to idle and limped home to cool the engine. Thermo has to be bad. It’s a 2015 engine with about 800 hours on it. I doubt that coolant pump has failed.

Pls send a new one to:

The aftercooler and gear cooler only have seawater in them– Temps of that water are not any any real value

As the coolant temps– I guess it is possible you have a bad 160F stat, but based on the history of these stats, not very likely.

As to running cold———are you talking cruise speeds and loads, or in the harbor?

If you send me an address and a note, I’ll send you one–But I would like to test the “suspect” one.
