July 22, 2017 at 5:10 pm Cummins had to replace my QSB 5.9 engine and put a Recon in it this last week. All seems to be fine. They very nicely gave me a version 3 VesselView as I didn’t have one in the boat. We connected it for the sea trial and it all worked fine yesterday. Today, shortly after starting the engine I got the “sim no J39 data” error. When this occurs, don’t get any rpm reading, either on the VesselView or the original tachome…

May 15, 2019 at 5:42 pm I had this message on one engine yesterday after a complete battery change Was a blown fuse on the ECM. My engines are near new version 1 reco QSB5.9 380hp. It turns out there are 4 fuses on each engine, one more than the Cummins guy was expecting. Iā€™m told his attendance and troubleshooting is not under warranty.

April 30, 2019 at 12:43 pm I recently installed a wet qsm11 which came with a smartcraft vesselview 4. Right off the bat is has a “warning troll” on the display that cannot be cleared. After talking to Mercury tech support they started it is a compatibility issue with Cummins and cannot be removed. Anyone else run into this issue?

April 30, 2019 at 6:36 pm You will not like my answer————–SmartCraft, AKA something I cannot put is print anymore, has no place on a Cummins engine. Why?–Simple……… There are no answers for the glitches, and a minimum of support from the Cummins distributor that profited from the sale of the engine…A sad situation that Cummins needs to address. • Is an EGT alarm a better overheat indicator than coolent temp.

January 28, 2018 at 5:10 pm Iā€™m considering installing EGT gauges with alarms to augment my coolent temp gauges/alarms. Iā€™m thinking this is an overall better heads up that things are heating up. Iā€™ve read that if you lost all coolant (blown hose) you may not get an alarm due to sensors no longer submerged in coolant. Am I thinking corectly? Is it worth installing these? Any strong opinions? Thanks! Joe

April 13, 2019 at 10:23 am IMO, in a Marine application using Cummins mid-range engines ( and probably most others) , the most import alarms you have can would be redundant coolant temp ( a tad below 200F) and seawater flow. How you do that is totally up to you but this site shows may options/pics.. Tony..

April 7, 2019 at 9:15 am I have a 6 year old Aquaalarm connected to a water flow sensor as well as a raw water temp sensor. Itā€™s not sounding this year when the keyswitch is turned as has always been the case, A quick look at wires, sensors, connections, etc. didnā€™t show anything obviously wrong. April 7, 2019 at 2:06 pm He who wired it ( who wasnā€™t me!) ran a red wire from the flow sensor to the alarm, a purple wire from the temp sensor to the alarm and powered the two sensors with a black wire tapped off the ignition, fused in the middle of no where and then split to a pair of black wires running to either sensor. The fuse was salt/moisture corroded… Fun afternoon for a 1$ part!

April 1, 2019 at 2:57 pm I have twin QSB 5.9 diesels in my 42 powerboat. Iā€™m currently cruising the Bahamas. Two days ago, an hour into a two hr run at 1800 rpm, I got a Smartcraft alarm on my port engine, ā€œFuel Level Input Highā€. See pic. April 4, 2019 at 6:36 am If that is the case then indeed you are more than likely dealing with a “smartCraft Gremlin”… Perform a factory reset on that specific display and re-configure it correctly as “Diesel Inboard NO TROLL” and go from there… Assuming fuel level readings are coming up on the screen and are rather accurate?

What about using a 24V alternator and starter motor with but keep the 12V panel and starter solenoid? This means I can have a 24V start and house batteries and this greatly simplifies charging and redundancy, etc. The 12…
