January 12, 2020 at 9:46 pm I just did my 1000 hr service and on the port engine on my 06 Searay 44 DB with QSC 8.3 500 HD engines. I disconnected several of the wire harness plugs to facilitate removal of the oil and fuel cooler as well as the aftercooler. When I started the engines to do a leak check the alarm sounded on the Diesel View and showed that I had low fuel level and low water flow. The engine started and ran with no problem and I have plenty water flowing thr…

March 2, 2020 at 7:22 am Hello – I have a 2000 Carver with a pair of 6CTA 450’s. I am in the process of upgrade the dash and was planning on using VDO Temp Gauges. The boat has dual helms. I have searched for dual station VDO temp senders and have not had much luck. What options are available for dual station senders that work with the VDO temp gauges? Thanks Steve

February 28, 2020 at 6:11 pm As a long time technician for caterpillar, I have a lot of experience with electrical gremlins and harness issues. I especially like a clean, well protected, nicely run wiring harness. Has anyone tried replacing the problem harness with a multi conductor cable? February 29, 2020 at 7:26 am Dan, I think the key is to simplify the electrical systems on boats with ECM controlled engines… there’s never a way to get rid of connectors (just think of modern days cars) BUT, if you use the proper di-electrics and monitor your electrical connections every now and then (annually?) I think it’s a very reliable setup. When we chose to steer away from Mercury many years ago, our goal was 100% to simplify the physical electric…

February 22, 2020 at 11:09 am The other day I had two alarms go off at the same time. Overheat and low oil pressure. I had the Cummins mechanic check it out and said that the motor was not overheating and the oil pressure was good. After trouble shooting it, he found corrosion on a connection to the J block. He felt very good that was the problem. I replace that wiring harness and J block but I am still getting error messages on my smartcraft gauge. is there anything I …

January 29, 2020 at 1:01 am I have been experiencing erratic and fluctuating readings on the cabin L/H water temperature gauge for a Cummins 6BTA engine. February 14, 2020 at 2:37 pm The hour meter on my port 6BTA has quit working. I am assuming the little clock has died inside the tach. Before I go to the trouble of installing new meters for both engines, is there a way to test that the clock is getting the correct voltage and that it truly is the meter and not a loose wire somewhere. Of course I will do the new meters for both engines, like headlights on cars, when one fails assume the other is not far behind.

November 16, 2019 at 4:43 pm Hi, I’m looking for some thoughts about unusual overheating alarms I’ve been experiencing. My boat has twin 6BT 210s. This is a trawler style boat, so I typically run 1400-1800 RPMs without getting on plane. The port engine engine gauge typically reads steady at about 185. The starboard gauge will typically read 5-10 degrees higher. The boat has dual helms, I’ve had a recurring issue where the lower helm gauge on the starboard …

November 19, 2019 at 11:17 am I opened up the panel to find that the previous owner had tapped into the ground on the temp gauge in question to install a new fuel gauge. Never realized it before! I corrected the ground for the temp gauge to its original configuration. Haven’t had a chance yet to run the engines up and test it, but do you think this could have interfered enough with the ground to cause the higher readings in that location?
