Mercury smartcraft replacement
This topic has 16 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated by 3 years ago
May 14, 2019 at 7:28 pm I am interested in replacing my Mercury marine smart craft computer. I have a 2009 Meridian with twin 5.9 cummins diesels. I have been told that because I also have a DTS throttle control system that I cannot replace the smart craft with an after market system. Is that true? What are my options? Thanks, Jon Arnold

The system referenced above will replace everything SmartCraft on your boat physically including the harnessing and start/stop key(s), etc.

Smartcraft/sync issue

September 22, 2020 at 1:19 pm Hi Everyone…Boat is a 2009 Meridian 391 with Cummins QSB 420 diesels. I have had issue with the smart craft display and bogus alarm that said something about paddle speed. The RPMs on the gauge would be sporadic sometimes. The problem I am now having is the Port side of the smart craft gauge and analog tach will go to zero as well as message that says “Lost engine Comm” and all the other items like volts, engine temp, oil press…

August 30, 2020 at 9:42 am I replaced a new instrument panel engine was running for about 10 minutes then shut down. When I turn the switch to on the fuel shut off solenoid doesnāt close. I checked the voltage going to it and itās only getting 11.8 volts. Voltage at the panel is 13.4v with the switch off and only 12.4v with the switch on. Is this normal?

erratic rpm readings

August 23, 2020 at 11:19 pm Hi All Im looking for any recommendations regarding the above mentioned, erratic rpm readings and sometimes no readings at all on my smartcraft vessel views. most of the time we could be cruising at 2050rpm then all of a sudden rpm will be fluctuating from 0 to 40,000rpm (engines still rev the same) Also happens at neutral 600rpm then any old random number pops up as the rpm. My first thought was could be a bad wire but everything seems fine. …
5 RepliesSeptember 8, 2020 at 7:13 am We replaced the lift/transfer pump with new, didnāt seem to work. mechanic tested and determined that the pump was drawing too much current. We put a second new pump on and it seemed to work fine when key on/key off. The next day engine was starting and was running fine but RPM still Erratic. Noticed that when key on on starboard side (good side) the buzzing of the cleaner then the troubles Portside. Ended up noticing that when key on, on the po…

SMX DigitalView Mechanical

July 18, 2020 at 12:45 pm Anyone ordered and installed the DigitalView system on their mechanical B series? Thinking about the upgrade and wondering how well they were liked after install. Did you go with the extras such as gear pressure/temp pyro, boost etc? How was it adding that on? My 6BTA 5.9’s with zf220a’s don’t seem to have present provisions for sending units. What hardware was included with the options?

Hours Discrepancy between Onan generator and SmartCraft VesselView
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 3 years ago
July 31, 2020 at 2:59 pm During routine log of my Onan generator hours I noticed that there is about 40 hour difference between the hours shown on the generator display and the SmartCraft VesselView. Would very much appreciate an advice on how to synch the hours. Could not find anything on this subject in the VesselView manual. I have twin 2012 QSB 5.9 480s and MDKBN Onan Generator. Thank you very much, Yury

January 30, 2020 at 9:35 am My starboard smart craft display when turned on for my QSB 8.3 diesel request calibration ? I followed the prompts and when complete I received a new message. The adaption process failed. Check that the proper connectors are plugged into the proper levers Check for proper ERC type. Could anyone let me know how I can trouble shoot the issue?
2 RepliesJuly 20, 2020 at 6:32 am Not hijack the thread but. I have been told my smart craft v1 has done a similar thing. It has always had no major issues. They then some how the got to calibrate but only the pt engine and it does not recognize the stb at all when the key is on. High coolant temp and low oil pressure alarm
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 3 years ago
March 28, 2020 at 6:58 am I’m getting a high coolant temp and a low oil pressure alarm when the engine warms up. I’ve confirmed this is not actually happening with a mechanical gauge and an IR temp gun. Also, I have a secondary set of alarms purchased here at Seaboard. I do believe this is ground issue. Any pointers on where to look? Using the voltage drop method with the DVMM is the best way to trace it out? I believe the panel ground goes into the harness …
2 RepliesJuly 19, 2020 at 6:40 am So… looked through some schematics and saw how it was wired. Instead of chasing the wire loom, I jumped the ground from the negative bus to the ground connection on the IC board. Seems to have fixed the false alarms. Iāll take some voltage potential readings to confirm. The wire loom has some ground connections on the starter that look fine. Suspect connectors or…unused ground for the fuel stop solenoid. D

Diesel Tachometer (Mag Pickup) w/Hour Meter
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 3 years ago
June 19, 2020 at 6:54 am Good morning, all. My dad and I are working on his 2003 Merdian 381 Sedan Bridge with 5.9 Cummins 6BTA M1 diesels. The OEM tachometers are worse for the wear and we’re looking to replace them, and frankly all of the gauges. We can’t seem to find a 4″ tachometer w/hour meter that’s for a magnetic pick up application. The gauges we have are Faria, who as far as I can tell, doesn’t carry a gauge with the hour meter. Do…

Alternator Electrical field and electrical interference
This topic has 4 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 3 years ago
June 18, 2020 at 5:41 pm Over last weekend I noticed that when I started my engine after a long drift that the sounder at low chirp became very noisy and the Garmin xsv quickly dialed down the gain till it cleaned up on auto. I was in approx 1000 ft of water so the gain was reasonably high. The last 2 days I did the following. Upon testing at the dock on a higher gain I could easily reproduce the issue. I also noticed that the higher the rpm the higher the interference.…

June 12, 2020 at 9:06 pm My 2007 qsc8.3 490 w/smart craft oil pressure reading acts like a switch. It either reads zero when warm at idle or 69 psi above 1100 rpm. Sender is correct. I traced 3 wires to connector. ground is good. Voltage supply is good and reference varies as supposed to . So oil sensor and wiring doing what their supposed to up to the block. I really can’t arbitrarily change computer components to fix. Any known way to test? Manual oil gauge …

Ferry Engine Parameter Monitoring – non Electronic Senders

May 25, 2020 at 3:59 pm Good morning, I am in search of a solution that can monitor ferry Engine Mechanical Parameters RPM, Oil Pressure, Engine temperature, fuel level, consumption etc and this data is to be relayed to a remote (Web based)monitoring system through GSM. The engines are of various types and using non-electronic old analog displays and the senders are as well. I found a suitable converter of these signals SMX Digital View. Exhaust sensor options

May 21, 2020 at 6:19 pm I would like to install an exhaust temperature sensor for my 6bts. I’ve seen the borel band sensors and the smx one. I am completely new to doing this. What would you recommend and where should I mount it? If better photos are needed, please let me know. Thank you
1 ReplyMay 25, 2020 at 6:05 am Look at these two options – Way faster response than a Borel unit that needs to sense thru the hose. The top one (hose mount) looks ideal

Glendinning controls issue

May 16, 2020 at 12:27 pm Today around 20 minutes into our trip while cruising both Cummins qsb 5.9 engines tripped out of gear from approx 2000 rpms. They immediately went to idle 750 rpms and in nuetral. Every light on the glendinning controls were lit red and flashing with an audible alarm. No engines alarms just the flashing on the throttle controls and inability to get back into gear and raise engine power. By turning the engines off and turning the ignition off I …
3 RepliesMay 18, 2020 at 4:56 pm They indicated I likely blew the 3 amp canbus fuse in the EEC 3 processor. Said likely scenario was tower or helm control head short. I isolated the tower control head (being the likely culprit) from the helm unit canbus loop and replaced blown fuse in EEC3 processor. Back in action. Thanks guys. Iām going to determine cost of installing the backup gear/throttle control unit as now I am going to have to purchase a new control head anyway.

Analog Instrument Panels

April 28, 2020 at 6:01 am I have a 5.9 BT in my 36 Heritage. Upper and lower helm panels do not agree in some cases. Question: Are upper and lower helm panels interchangeable? Are they different? Are they serial number (engine) specific? Tony mentioned cleaning terminals in another thread. How do you clean instrument terminals and contacts? Really appreciate the help
1 ReplyApril 28, 2020 at 1:50 pm Second station panels are different because of the engine start/stop… otherwise they are very similar. Start by cleaning your terminals with WD-40 and a toothbrush… then wait, watch & monitor.

Oil pressure gauge issue on new gauge panel.
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 4 years ago
April 11, 2020 at 1:51 pm I made a new instrument panel for my Boston Whaler 31L, and everything seems to work except the oil pressure gauge. The boat has twin Cummins 6BTA – 315 HP engines, with single station oil pressure sending units. I know there are a couple of different types of sending units for different applications, and I assume it’s a compatibility issue, as I’ve double checked the wiring, and its the same issue on both engines. When I tu…
3 RepliesApril 12, 2020 at 1:01 pm If you are trying to using the Cummins (PCB) alarm board, you are in trouble–The alarm board uses the proper senders just like the gauges — In so many words, it will not work as it is trying to interpret the same resistances for oil pressure and for coolant temp..
