October 29, 2021 at 10:09 am Hi. I’m still battling with “what should I do about the dripless?” My gears are so close to the shaft log that only about 2 inches or less on Stb of shaft are showing between the Tides Marine seal flange and the shaft coupler (solid). Which means that the only way to change the seals is to lift the rear of the engine/gear about 8 inches and work under that load to remove the shaft coupling with a puller etc, impossible. Which I…

September 19, 2021 at 7:04 pm Hi everyone, I have been troubleshooting a no start issue and noticed that under the starter there’s a bunch of connections to relays and a box with a large plug on it. My guess its all related to the Air Heater Grid, which have no idea if it works or not as some cables are loose. Do I need this in the tropics? How do I disconnect all this and eliminate it? Does the “box” and large plug on it control any engine start and run e…

The other step related to starter maintenance would be to find a location that is more accessible for the starter mag switch. I would like t…

October 6, 2021 at 11:38 am I’ve got a 1998 6bt that recently started to show black smoke at high rpm (at the dock and under way). There has been no change to prop or any other boat change and there has been about 3 weeks between a 150 mile trip and the first sign of this problem. The marine repairs guys in the area are booked out 5-8 weeks so I’d like to find out how to go about diagnosing the problem myself. Thanks Ron

November 2, 2021 at 10:15 am You may be battling with contaminated fuel tanks. Are there vacuum gauges on the filters? What are they reading? Pull the fuel supply hoses ahead of the filters and take a sample, and observe flow rate. If itā€™s slow, blow some air back through the tank (remove the filler cap!) And see if flow improves. Also look at the fuel tank vents for obstructions.

You can also look at the data plate that is on the engine and it will tell you the rated RPM. You reported 2570 which is spot on. October 22, 2021 at 10:04 am Hi, Im trying to find solutions to not re-route the raw water hose under the engine pan-against the stringer into the inlet elbow of the raw water pump. My 6BTAs have the standard Sherwood 1730 pump and the stringer is so close to the inlet that the hose is basically unreachable unless the engine is lifted. October 25, 2021 at 10:55 am I agree with changing the pump when the engine is out if it needs to be. In regards to the elbow swap, I thought of curving it up and over the stringer, not only away from the stringer. If I rotate it by loosening the plate I could probably separate it from the stringer but it would still be running the hose under the engine and very hard to reach the hose clamps etc.

October 25, 2021 at 6:37 am I have a 5.9 QSB, I run about 5 gallons thru. I suspect youā€™ll need at least that. Basically youā€™ll want a dark pink coming out of the exhaust and your dripless as well – if you have dripless. Best advice, run extra thru – $6 or $7 a gallon is cheap insurance against freezing.
