December 1, 2021 at 12:44 pm Hi. I have 220 HP Cummins engines in my boat. Earlier this year I replaced the water lift muffler on the port engine and heat exchangers on both engines. The starboard engine measures about 120F on the very thick, old exhaust hose just below the elbow. The port engine now has a silicone hump hose on the elbow, and there is only about an inch between the exhaust elbow output and inlet to the new water lift muffler. The port engine measures 2…

    • Twin Cummins = common ground?

December 1, 2021 at 11:26 am I need to figure out which DC/DC charger to get (to charge a house LiFePO4 battery from the alternator/start batt), but hit a snag not knowing whether to get the Victron “isolated” or “non-isolated” 12v/12v DC to DC charger. The difference is the non-isolated works if there is a common ground from the house to starting battery, which I think is for both starting batteries but I’m not sure (the boat is far away and …

    • Which water pumps to get?

This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byTony Athens 2 years ago

November 30, 2021 at 12:32 pm I have two 1999 Cummins 6CTA 8.3 M3 engines. Serial numbers 45889663 and 45889973. I want to replace both Sherwood raw water pumps with SMX pumps but I’m confused as to which model to order. The port pump is stamped with P1730F WHC while the starboard is stamped with P1727A GFD. Do I need one SMX-1727 and one SMX-1730? I would expect both engines would have the same pump. Thanks!

November 21, 2021 at 11:00 am I have a 2006 Meridian 411 with twin QSB5.9-380’s and I’m looking to add a fresh water flush system to the boat. The owners manual shows a clear lift muffler in the exhaust system but my boat doesn’t have that where the manual says it is. I’m trying to evaluate if I need to have the engines running to flush. Do I have a lift muffler or something like it in my exhaust system? Please see pics. Thanks Matt Charlest…

December 1, 2021 at 11:37 am From the looks of it you have the exact same boat and configuration as me, a Meridian 411 with 6BTAs. I have installed a fresh water flush system running into the raw water pump outlet bung. I flush it after every outing for about 5 minutes per engine without the engine running and not problems.

January 26, 2021 at 5:26 am I have two 4btaā€™s with 1600 hours – Ive never serviced the heat exchangers, last year I removed the aft end caps off both, they where immaculate with no blockage or evidence of corrosion, the engines operate in salt water and have been fresh water flushed after every use since new. Engine temps are stable at 180 -185 degrees (with 180ā€™ thermostatā€™s) regardless of load apart from slow speed running- they both tend to run a lot cooler. Due t…

November 26, 2021 at 10:12 am I am planning on replacing most of my hoses and by passing the fuel fitting on the Combo block. Only using the Combo block for the Oil Pressure senders. Last year I already eliminated the Fuel Cooler. Are the three Banjo fittings on the Lift Pump and the Supply one on the Injection Pump (BOSCH 7100) all the same size. Seems the two banjo fittings on the Injection pump and the Lift Pump are larger than the Return one that is shown in the 6BTA parts book I have. The one for the Injection pump seems to be a one piece fitting made up of the banjo – an extension tube and an integral fitting. At least it was tight enough t…

November 23, 2021 at 6:10 pm You are simply trying to get the oil around the ends where the caps are from the inside. This will assist with pressing out the core. Just pour it in either air-in/ air out ports then flip it cap down then flip over and cap down again. Give it time to work .

November 17, 2021 at 4:14 pm Hi, I want to add fuel flow gauges to a 450hp 6cta. I want it to be on my nmea2k bus. Floscan seems sort of only half in business with a website that hasn’t been updated in years. Is maretron the only game in town? Anyone have any experience? Seems like something Seaboard could corner the market on?

What is the peak fuel flow of the 450hp 6cta? Trying to understand which Maretron sensors I’d need as it seems like they’re really the only ones in the game.

I do not flush the engine with fresh water, the boat is in salt water from late March till early December. Tony can probably dig up pictures of what my old AC looked like in 2012 with no service in 5 years/500 hours.. You really want to be over servicing as opposed to under servicing them!
