Hi everyone, While looking for simplification options and thruhull relocations I have thought about the following:

Can I mount two thruhulls within a single rectangular hull strainer given the mushrooms outside fit and the valves inside fit?

1st hull strainer with: 2″ port engine raw water intake thruhull and 3/4″ A/C raw water intake thruhull
2nd hull strainer with: 2″ starboard engine raw water intake thruhull and 3/4″ generator raw water intake thruhull

Will one starve the other in this scenario?

    Are checkvalves required?

Or is hull strainer supply sufficient for both without issue, just like installing thruhulls closely together and having internal basket strainers?

    Any advise is appreciated.

    Alex,

I’m pulling my own boat next month for the winter I’ll document what we do.. Hang in there until Jan/Feb /March next year.. Pic of my Bro’s boat underside attached.. We have molds for the long ” 1/2 scuba tank size” screens.. You can put 3-4 thru- hulls under these. Sometime we cut then in have a make the front more square with holes for faster boats so they “scoop”..

Thank you Dan. My idea of the hull strainer is to eliminate the inboard strainer due to limited space. I see that the Buck strainers come in different sizes with the slide out screen that is my preference.

Being in the Caribbean we get high growth of seeweed and barnacles although not mussels, perhaps tiny clams. I plan on maintaining these by checking/removing/cleaning the screen monthly anyways and have read somewhere that coating the screen in Propspeed or similar will help.

My main concern is fitting a 2″ and a 1.5″ thruhull and valve within the same strainers (2). One for port eng+AC and one for stb eng+Gen.

Im waiting to receive the valves before I order the strainers to make sure of the separation/spacing I need to be able to rotate the valves on to the threads etc, before drilling holes too close or committing to a strainer that is too small.

    Alex,
I have the Buck Algonquin pickups with slide out strainers you are considering,If you keep your boat in a high marine growth area (specifically oysters) this may be relevant to you, they work very well keeping debris out of the engine with their finer screening- my internal strainers stay clean, however oysters start out microscopic and like to take up residence inside the pickup, they grow big and fast!

If I don’t remove the screens monthly to clean internally oysters severely restrict water flow, if left unchecked the oysters will completely stop water flow and I cant remove the screen.

Recently I had to destroy the screens to get them out as I had not removed them for three months, not a lot of fun holding your breath doing it.

For my boat location the Groco hinged pickups would have been a better choice.

Thanks Rob, I should be looking for a large/long enough hull strainer that fits one 2″ and one 1.5″ thruhull and their valves.

Need to make sure I have enough room to screw the valve bodies into the thruhulls without interference, so spacing is critical in my limited bilge area.

Yes, there are models with removeable screens for cleaning/maintenance. I pull my screens every spring as part of my routine commissioning. See my posts in these two threads:

Hi Tony, Is there a way to mount a squid strainer in such manner that it can be removed for cleaning?

Epoxied bolts (1/4-20) from the inside leaving studs thru the bottom and nylock nuts along the squid strainer perimeter.

Just thinking and wiring to get ideas….

I’m looking for options in grouping thruhulls within a single strainer but would prefer something that I can service every once in a while from under the boat.

    Thanks

    Thanks Tony,

I havent puchased the hull strainers yet (Buck Algonquin 00RSS655PF (2″)) but the ID of those without the removable screen (3″x6.25″) would fit one 2″ thruhull for an engine and a second 1.5″ thruhull.

    Same for the other engine.

The extra 1.5″ thruhulls within each hull strainer I could T off with checkvalves for the generator and washdown pump. And A/C and future water maker intake.

OD of this hull strainer is 4.62″x10.25″.

I could also go one size up on the strainer (Buck Algonquin 00RSS110PF (3″)) and it will be ID 4.37″x9″ without the screen.

OD of this hull strainer is 5.9″x12.75″

If the outside strained id big enough, no issues.. What it the one you have rated for? On my own boat I have 4 pick-ups under one large squid screen
