6BTA 330 (M3) 2000 model 857 hours in Riviera 3350 FB. Travelling along nicely at 2100rpm, temp good at 78 degrees, oil pressure good at around 50psi, port engine suddenly loses power and stops. Felt the boat starting to lose power so had already began to throttle back, looked at the port tach and she’s dead. Engine would not restart, cranks but wont even attempt to start. Limped back to port on one engine.

Tech has now changed the Racor and primary filters, bled the lines, cracked the injectors, good squirt of fuel coming from all 6 injectors on each stroke but engine just will not start, just cranks over and over and doesn’t even look like firing. No coolant loss and no oil loss, no evidence of water in the oil or vice versa. Fuel shutoff Solenoid is working properly but we disconnected it and manually held the fuel line open in any case, still nothing. The only noticeable thing is that after a lot of cranking the solenoid housing was very hot to touch.

Cummins tech suggested a possible exhaust blockage but that was only an “over the phone suggestion, getting a tech here in Queensland at the moment it a 6 week wait. Others suggested checking compression, but the motors were running nicely, no smoke, no soot, loads of power, 3050rpm at WOT under way.

What are we missing here ? What else can I check without specialist equipment ?

    Bummer – but ok

Bummer on the cracked valve, but now you know what needs to be fixed – hopefully back underway after quick repair.

    And the answer wasā€¦..

After more investigation today turns out the engine had snapped a valve in cylinder 3 resulting in a catastrophic failure.

Air, fuel, and compression is all they need to run, as you know. So, random blockage pre-turbo?

Maybe unscrew the drain out the bottom of the aftercooler to make sure nothing sinister is going on there.

An exhaust blockage is possible, but unlikely, and would need to be really significant not to mention robust to stop a 6BT from running from high speed, and not something I’ve heard of on a Riv.
