Hi, Im trying to find solutions to not re-route the raw water hose under the engine pan-against the stringer into the inlet elbow of the raw water pump.

My 6BTAs have the standard Sherwood 1730 pump and the stringer is so close to the inlet that the hose is basically unreachable unless the engine is lifted.

Since I am getting ready to take the engines out for maintenance, might as well do something about the hose connection.

Thought about adding a 45 degree hose section to the stock 45 inlet that would bring the main hose out from under the engine and run it along side the engine and aftercooler.

Then I saw this 115 degree elbow (see photo), will this elbow fit the Sherwood pump so I can use the 115 elbow in the intake also?

    Thank you!

I agree with changing the pump when the engine is out if it needs to be.

In regards to the elbow swap, I thought of curving it up and over the stringer, not only away from the stringer.

If I rotate it by loosening the plate I could probably separate it from the stringer but it would still be running the hose under the engine and very hard to reach the hose clamps etc.

What you’re saying makes sense just realize that once you loosen the four bolts holding the plate on–which holds on the elbow–then the elbow can rotate 360Ā°. My point is that the existing elbow might be OK if you just rotate it away from the stringer a little(?).

As far as the elbow you identify and whether or not it will fit the sherwood pump, I cannot say 100% but I can tell you that people swap elbows from sherwood to smx all the time and that works fine.

Lastly I would encourage you to consider the condition of the pump itself and proactively change it while the engine is out if it’s even close to needing it. The labor you will save will pay for the pump.
