Leaking Fuel Cooler
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 8 months ago
June 20, 2023 at 12:17 pm I have had an issue with water and algae in my tanks this year. Ā The fuel polishing mechanic pulled a bunch of water out of the tanks, mostly port. He mentioned that I may have a leaking fuel cooler. Ā How would I know?Ā 2002 GB 42 Twin 6CTA 8.3 2 300 gallon tanks with transfer hose open to allow tanks to stay even. Ā Thank you in advance. Art
1 ReplySeptember 4, 2023 at 6:37 am If you had a leaking fuel cooler, your fuel tank would over fill with raw water in just a few hours of running. Deck fills or fuel tank vents are most likelyĀ your issue–Or you fuel supplier?

MDL 4 / 423L Cummins operating temp
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 8 months ago
June 10, 2023 at 8:41 am Hello Guys, I have a 423L on a 20KW Onan Gene. I was curious how hot should the block be if Iām shooting it with a temp gun. I see the exhaust elbow before the raw water is about 238F at normal running under load, 114F after raw water. Temp at oil pan was around 218-220F. On a different note can anyone tell me how to trip the sensors manually, like oil pressure sensor, low oil sensor, coolant temp and over rev sensors. I just want to make sure t…

Sherwood GC5 Seawater Pump – nut ceased engine
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 8 months ago
June 14, 2023 at 10:24 am I posted a few weeks back regarding our 6BTA 5.9 250 HP engine ceasing.Ā Ā We took the engine out of the boat and come to find out we believe the Sherwood GC5 Seawater Pump, in particular the nut is the culprit.Ā Ā When we started taking it apart the nut was not on the tapered shaft.Ā Ā What we did find was pieces of steal in the gears along with dents that provided us with evidence that the nut came off, got lodged in the gears, stopped the engine…

QSB5.9 – Holset HX40 v Cummins Turbo
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 8 months ago
August 31, 2023 at 10:19 am Hi I recently bought a Galeon 420 that has a pair of QSB 5.9 Cummins – fantastic! Unfortunately the previous owners didn’t take good care of her so I’m working my way through servicing and replacing various bits – it’s starting to add up! Whilst looking to replace the injectors and the turbocharger I noticed that these were off the shelf parts from other companies with Cummins badge on them with a much lower price. …

160 vs 180 thermostat
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 8 months ago
August 31, 2023 at 6:20 am I currently have the 160 deg thermostat installed in my 6bta. I do a lot of drift fishing at idle and slow trolling. My temp gauge usually reads 145-150 even at cruise. Should I switch to the 180 thermostat considering how much idling and slow trolling I do?
3 RepliesSeptember 1, 2023 at 7:06 am So Iām on the Long Island Sound. Rare that my runs are more than 45 mins. My boat is way overpowered as itās a 25ft downeast hull with a 6bta. The engine is rated to 370 but the prior owner detuned the engine to about 315 by under propping. My cruise is around 2300 RPMs. But most of the time Iām idling while drifting for fluke or trolling at 3.5 kts for stripers. There is white smoke at idle and at the slower trolling speeds. I have a raw water …

Turbo or Aftercooler Core
This topic has 9 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 8 months ago
August 10, 2023 at 11:58 am I have twin Cummins BTA 5.9. I am cleaning and servicing two very, very dirty oily (airside) aftercooler cores. Both engines are suffering from the same symptoms. They both have dirty, oily aftercooler cores and they both have oil leaking at the turbos.Ā Question: Is the dirty core causing turbo pressure and leaks at the turbo or is the turbo oil causing the aftercooler cores to get oily? The turbos seem to spin normally and have no play or loos…

Dry liners for QSB5.9
This topic has 7 replies, has 6 voices, and was last updated by 8 months ago
August 10, 2023 at 8:33 pm I recall seeing somewhere that you said thatĀ that dry liners are unsuitable in reconditioning QSB 5.9s. My insurers are requesting quotes to repair my engine after seawater up the exhaust, and the quotes I have received are based on using dry liners. Is there some some way I can document to my insurers that dry liners are not suitable for this engine. Many thanks for your help

July 29, 2023 at 9:08 am Hey guys, new to the forum, Ā We recently just took our Tiara 3600 sovren to key west and back. Put about 4-500 miles on the boat and itās powered 380 QSB cummins. while crying back through the inter coastal about 10 miles from home my starboard engine lost power and I brought the engines down to an idle. August 21, 2023 at 12:49 pm I am installing in my 38 Chris Craft two 430 hp RecĆ³n Cummins 6CTA engines with two racor FG1000 filters.Ā Before starting the engines, I fill the fuel filters and they are emptied shortly before starting the engines and I don’t understand why?Ā I wonder: should the filter retain the fuel?Ā Does the engine have a check valve?Ā Everything installed is new and I don’t know where I can have the error and if this is normal?Ā Can you help…

August 21, 2023 at 8:40 am Hi guys. Just a quick check. I am going to remove my sea water pump from my stbd engine. I was wondering about the gear box where the pump is connected. Will there be any fluid surprises for me when I do this other than some residual water in the tubes? Any advice or words of wisdom to offer before I begin would be appreciated? šĀ Thanks.

August 20, 2023 at 12:15 pm I have a 6BT-5.9m 210 hp engine (Serial # 45795214) driving a 1999 Mainship Pilot. I have noticed over the season that the SOG has been declining – at the beginning of the season I was doing 12.7 knots easily at 2400 rpm and 15.6 @ WOTĀ which was just a tad south of 2600 as indicated on the tach- now the average speed has fallen to about 10.2 at 2400 and 12,5 at WOT. Oil pressure test port for QSC

August 16, 2023 at 9:36 am I was wondering if anyone knows a good oil Ā pressure test port for the Cummins QSCās. My starboard engine has gone to a zero pressure display and alarm. This was just after starting the motor and putting it into gear. It spiked to 70 psi then went to zero. Iām guessing it is just a malfunction on the electronic sending unit. 6BT210 Cracked Rocker Arm Assembly

August 20, 2023 at 2:50 pm I have a 6BT210 CPL 742 with about 3000 hours since a minor rebuild (new head, new injectors, rebuilt fuel pump, etc.) A week ago I noticed a slight oil leak coming from #2 valve cover.Ā I decided to tighten the valve cover bolt a little (about 1/8 turn) hoping it would solve the oil leak problem.Ā I think I overtigtened that bolt.Ā About 30 minutes from the dock on our last trip, I go to increase the RPMs to 2000 and noticed I could only get 18…
2 RepliesAugust 21, 2023 at 12:41 am I took the rocker arm assembly off by removing the head bolt. The smaller 8mm bolt snapped off flush with the head so I will have to extract it. Hoping i can put a new rocker assembly on with a new head bolt and it’s good.Ā There is a small piece of metal missing (see pics) which could have ended up in tappet cover/oil pan.
