Hello,

I guess I’ll get to the point. The captured coolant system on one of my 5.9 is loosing coolant everytime we take the boat out. The coolant isn’t in the bilge, or the oil. I have had the heat exchanger pressure tested and it’s good. Wondering if someone out there has any suggestions.

    Thanks

Yes. Most all marine diesels have a heat exchanger system. The salt water from the raw water pump circulates in a separate closed set of hoses but pulls the engine heat and after cooler heat through the heat exchanger ( both salt and coolant flow through this) but the two liquids do not mix. The salt water is exhausted out the muffler system and the coolant keeps circulating now with it’s heat given to the salt water.Ā
Additionally there is an accessory bottle that captures the coolant that expanded in volume from getting hot.. But when the engine cools the engine sucks the now cooler excess coolant back into the engine’s expansion tank ( where the radiator cap is). Ā This keeps the level of coolant to it’s max. Without it the hot expended coolant drains out and the expansion tank stays at a lower level. May be sufficient to keep engine OK but most of us like the extra coolant available.
This is usually a plastic bottle mounted near the front of the engine maybe on a bulkhead with a little tube connecting it to the expansion tank.Ā
All this only works if the coolant cap (radiator cap) is working. Ā Without it the coolant leaks out one time and just stays at that level. Ā If you refill it it will just spit out. But may not be real noticeable.Ā

Do you haveĀ coolant fed domestic water heater?Ā or bus heater?

My Engines have a cooling system that is filled with coolant/ antifreeze that is separate from the raw lake water system.Ā

When you say the captured coolant system I think you are talking about the Coolant Recovery bottle .Ā Ā

Does your on engine expansion tank keep about the same level of coolant?Ā I recently had similar issures and did a posting about it and it turned out to be bad “Radiator Caps” that were not letting the coolant go back and forth between the expansion tank and the Coolant Recovery bottle.Ā Two ne 15-16lbs caps and I was back in action.Ā Be sure to get the caps that allow two way flow – not all do.Ā Tony has some SS ones in the store on this site.
