New member up in Maine could use some help.

Apologies if this has already been posted somewhere but Ive had no luck finding the info.  My ZF gear has gone out and I have to remove the turbo assembly to pull the transmission.   Im not new to working on engines but Im new to these 8.3s.   Is there a shop manual that describes the process of removing the turbo?    Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Yes the service manual describes the procedure.  You can get one from a Cummins dealer for less than $100.

Removal is pretty straightforward.  Drain your coolant, remove coolant hose from bottom (there will be a little residual coolant in the turbo), remove oil feed & drain connections, remove exhaust elbow, remove air outlet & air filter, remove nuts holding turbo to exhaust manifold.  The most difficult part might be removing the exhaust elbow as these sometimes are stubborn but not too bad on the 6C.

There is an article on this site that shows some tips when re-installing.  You’ll need new gaskets.  As the article says, make sure you put the gasket on properly.  There is writing on the gasket that identifies the ‘TURBO SIDE’ of the gasket, which is good, but, for whatever dumb reason, this writing is sideways when the gasket is placed correctly.  Just take an extra second to make sure the gasket goes on correctly.

If you’re doing this in the water, be aware that depending on your your boat and the exhaust design, you can sink the boat when removing exhaust components.
