6bta 370s oil pressure lost/fuel cooler kit
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 9 months ago
July 3, 2023 at 6:03 am I recently installed the SMX fuel cooler removal kit on both engines,.Ā This past weekend I finally put her in water and ran 20nm to my slip.Ā Babying it on the way down I noticed unusual activity with both oil pressure gages.Ā At idle stayed at 45 PSI and and increased to 52 running at 2100.Ā Prior to the combo block removal pressures were 5 psi at idle and 50+ at 2300, this was very consistent for the past 8 years.Ā Yesterday I ran her at 2450…
1 ReplyJuly 3, 2023 at 10:40 am I suggest installing a mechanical pressure guage on a TEE with theĀ existing pressure sensor for the dash gauges.Ā Ā Ā Ā That will tell you which problem you have,Ā a goofy dash guage or a real problem.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Use a steel hydraulic TEE. for strength and vibration resistance. At the very least a FORGED brass TEE. If it is a goofy guage check ALL the wiring between the sensor and the guageĀ and the actual guage power supply.Ā Ā THe conne…

New Cummins QSB 6.7 liter with problems
This topic has 8 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 9 months ago
June 18, 2023 at 3:08 pm At the end of February we took possession of a new 2023 Helmsman Trawlers 38E Pilothouse trawler with a Cummins QSB 6.7 liter 250hp diesel engine. Several problems have occurred with the engine, beginning during delivery from the transport ship to the dealership and continuing through 53 hours of engine operation. Problem 1: Engine starts normally and shuts down after running for a few seconds. The engine restarts normally and runs without incid…
8 RepliesJuly 2, 2023 at 10:52 am It appears our engine issue has been resolved. Cummins replaced the lift pump, the low pressure pump and the on engine filter. Everything performed nominally on a sea trial following the repairs. It appears that the low pressure pump was out of tolerance and only delivering 30 psi when it should have been around 70 psi. We took the boat out on a 35 mile cruise, cruising at different RPM. The engine started normally and ran continuously with no R…

Cummins Onan 9kw Genset voltage problem
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 9 months ago
June 27, 2023 at 10:34 am I have a 9kw Onan Genset. Ā Ā When I start the engine and switch it to Genset on my panel, the line Voltage jumps back and forth from 60-120. Ā It will then shut the Genset down, and show error code 12 on the panel. Ā Ā
Ā Ā These are things Iāve done. Changed all fuel filters Disconnected AC wires off generator that run to panel on the Genset then. Ā It runs fine no issue, but of coarse dsnt put AC power to panel. With AC wires disconnec…
3 RepliesJuly 2, 2023 at 4:41 am I think the answer is clear.. Either buy all the manuals and put yourself thru ONAN SCHOOL,Ā or hire a tech that you think can sort it out . An outside guess from me would be something related to the very expensive voltage regulators they useĀ Onan uses 1st class engines but their electronics/control systemsĀ are extremely tough to deal with once they become “glitchy”. If you are hands on and have the time/desire, you could remove an…

QSB Bad Fuel Lift Pump on Trucks – Marine engines involved?
This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 9 months ago
June 28, 2023 at 12:30 pm There is problem with the 6.7 Diesel lift pump used in trucks. It appears the āCP4ā pump used in the Dodge trucks 6.7 is failing, and can cause metal to enter the fuel system. On another boat forum, people are equating the same problem for the marine 6.7 and calling out the CP4 pump on the engine. The Cummins marine website notes my fuel lift pump is: 5260632. The local dealer in my area has reported no unusual fuel pump lift failures in the mar…

6BTA Turbo Oil feed line
This topic has 5 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 10 months ago
June 26, 2023 at 8:54 am Just had my turbos rebuilt and had to replace the oil feed line, not sure what kind of stuff Cummins put on the flared fitting into the adapter but it was never coming off so I had to cut them.Ā I understand I need to manually put oil in the turbo before firing up.Ā Two questions, how much oil should I put in there, and do I need to prime the oil feed line before firing up?Ā I realize oil pressure builds quickly but just want to be sure I don…
5 RepliesJune 28, 2023 at 4:07 am To follow up on Richards post, while it works…. When I purchased a rebuilt turbo, the instructions called for adding a few oz’s of oil to the top of the turbo before starting.

June 23, 2023 at 4:47 am Twin 2006 qsb 5.9 in SeaRay 40DA, approx 1000 hrs each My problem: At sea trial last yr cummins tech using Insite did not see any gear pressure on Stb eng.Ā All other data normal. Diesel View (1.0) shows no gear pressure for stb eng.Ā All other data displayed. Stuff done: Cleaned contact at press transducer–no change Switched press transducer between port and stb eng–still no DV data for stb gear pressure Measured voltage at press tr…
2 RepliesJune 27, 2023 at 9:28 am In digging I think I can relate the sensor wire from press transducer to ecn eng harness connector to position 5 (wire # 5).Ā With tranny in gear it should show something less than 5 volts.Ā Is there any risk to measuring volt between wire 5 (tranny in gear) and grounding on eng?Ā Hopefully only takes a wire “wiggle” and we see something.

June 22, 2023 at 3:26 am I have a 2009 Grand Banks 41EU with QSB 5.9 425HP motors and Zeus Pod drives. In February 2023 I made a 130NM journey across Bass Strait to see The Hobart Wooden Boat Festival (in very rough weather). About half way across the stbd motor alarms sounded and showed several fault messages going into limp mode at 600rpm (it has done this previously when the trim tab actuator leaked oil). We kept this motor running to help progress out journey. Our s…
4 RepliesJune 24, 2023 at 9:39 am My question would be what has transpired as to engines repairs, etc since February ?–From what you posted I’d typically see a cracked turbo casting and maybe even the exhaust manifold ,Ā besides various gaskets etc.. Very serious overheat that the alarms sounded but there was no response for a long time???Ā Kinda confused on what happened, but it seems the engine did try to “tell a story” that needed to be addressed soone…

October 23, 2020 at 11:50 am Hello, We purchased a 2007 boat last month with twin QSB 5.9ās in it. Total hours 1050. The engine paperwork shows major work done on it including replacing the aftercoolers ( both core and housings), servicing the heat exchangers, new hoses, clamps, water pump impellers, raw water sea strainers sand blasted, and much more. during the sea trial we had a high manifold temp and low manifold pressure alarm on the starboard engine above 2600 rpm. …

Heavy Duty Bulk Separator Kit
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 10 months ago
June 21, 2023 at 1:05 pm I have an almost new racor 1000 on my M2 6cta. (A Year old. )Instead of replacing this with a double/double ,would adding the Heavy Duty Bulk Separator Kit in front of the racor be a good upgrade? I don’t want to ditch the racor since its almost new, but I want more protection. Ā Would I just run the fuel line into the Bulk separator, Ā then into the racor? Ā Would adding the squeeze bulb priming kit be an option with this? Ā Not sure how I w…
1 ReplyJune 21, 2023 at 6:34 pm Yes, the H.D. bulk filter would be a good upgrade.Ā Just run the hoses filter to filter in series. Tony has suggested this many time when people want to upgrade without throwing all the old equipment into the drink. As far as the squeeze pump is concerned it too is a good upgrade.Ā Ā However Tony has written about this many times and it is posted here.Ā Ā Ā Just go to Tony’s tips and check his writings.Ā Ā Ā There is a right and a poo…

unequal engine acceleration
This topic has 8 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 10 months ago
June 2, 2023 at 4:46 am I have a recent problem that I hope someone can help with.Ā I have twin Cummins 6bta 370hp engines with about 1330 hours on them.Ā Recently the starboard engine has been accelerating slower than the port side, to the point it will start to take a hard turn before I can get the engines synchronized again.Ā Once it gets over about 2000 rpm it will spin up to rated RPM of 3000 and maintain speed with no problem.Ā Both turbos were replaced with bran…
8 RepliesJune 21, 2023 at 1:55 pm Thanks for the input, and no you aren’t all wet. I found what you described in an old Cummins troubleshooting manual I found. It essentially says if there’s more than a 3 psi difference between the two gauges the cooler is clogged. So I’ll be busy this weekend trying to get creative with some plumbing to check these things out. Thanks for taking the time to respond. If weather cooperates I’ll post updates next week.

June 16, 2023 at 6:20 pm I have been working on my 1987 Albin 36 trawler for the past year.Ā I spent considerable time and money on the 6BT engine getting it cleaned up and refitting all the hoses, clamps, accessory belt, new Dayco belt tensioner, and new alternator (145A Delco 19si from SBM).Ā On Sunday we ran the boat from our house to a boat yard for haul out.Ā As we started out we smelled burning rubber.Ā My wife took the helm and I went below to check the engine an…
7 RepliesJune 20, 2023 at 5:49 am The amount of contact between the belt & alternator is poor on that belt wrap design, which is going to limit the amount of power the alternator will be able to produce without belt slip, especially at low/idle rpms. Look at Tony’s picture…old belt wrap (yours) only has about 120Ā° of contact, new belt wrap has about 270Ā°.Ā Amount of torque the belt can apply before slipping is directly proportional to this angle due to something …

Brand and size of anti-siphon fuel valve
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 10 months ago
June 16, 2023 at 6:40 am I see there are anti-siphon and Check valves. It seems the are different and used for different purposes.
if I have 1/2ā fuel lines what size anti-siphon valve should I install so that I donāt restrict the flow so much. That is should I install a 5/8ā hose segment and use a 5/8ā valve.
any particular brand? Ā It seems the one I purchased takes a pretty fair amount of blowing or sucking pressure when I try it by mouth.Ā
2 RepliesJune 17, 2023 at 12:40 pm I read about using them on an earlier post. I would only use one for my center tank which is mounted lower than the outboard ones. Top of center tank is about 10 inches below bottom of the others and the fuel will drain back if left a day or so between cranking. Normally I just turn off the supply vale when using it.Ā
I donāt believe itās return is made to go to bottom of the tank. It was built by a shop for me in 1998 and I did not s…

Sherwood GC5 Seawater Pump – nut caused catastrophic damage

June 14, 2023 at 10:45 am I posted a few weeks back regarding our 6BTA 5.9 250 HP engine ceasing.Ā Ā We took the engine out of the boat and come to find out we believe the Sherwood GC5 Seawater Pump, in particular the nut is the culprit.Ā Ā When we started taking it apart the nut was not on the tapered shaft.Ā Ā What we did find was pieces of steal in the gears along with dents that provided us with evidence that the nut came off, got lodged in the gears, stopped the engine…

6CTA Primer Pump Leaks
This topic has 5 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 10 months ago
June 6, 2023 at 10:36 am Hi, I have a ’99 6CTA with 2,400 hours.Ā While changing the on-engine fuel filter last weekend, the primer pump on the Bosch injection pump leaks when pushed, nor does it seem to pump fuel.Ā The engine seems to run normally, my question is can I run the boat this way for a while or is it “mission critical”. Thanks Larry

Transmission Cooler relocating 6CTA 8.3
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 10 months ago
June 11, 2023 at 10:09 am I will remove the fuel port and S-board coolers and like to place the transmission coolers in their location. The original TM coolers are mounted on a good size mounting bracket behind the after coolers. The picture on the SBmar site shows it to be suspended just by the rubber hose coming from the raw water pump and the lower cap on the aftercooler. So my question is there no other support required, or is there a modified bracket I can not see i…
