May 25, 2021 at 6:22 am On our first run for the spring (2006 Searay 48 Sundancer) I got a low oil pressure alarm on my port engine about 30 minutes into the trip. Checked the gauge on the engine and it showed good oil pressure. Shut it down anyway and went back to the marina. I then verified oil level is good and restarted while watching the gauge on the engine. Pressure came up just like starboard engine. Engine sounds fine and pressure matches starboard on engin…

June 26, 2023 at 11:20 am After purchasing two remanufactured Cummins 6BTA engines, wiring harnesses, exhaust risers, engine isolators, and panels….nothing but problems.  Worse yet, Cummins refused to honor their 2 year warranty, despite 7 independent and timely claims.   Even the Cummins dealer, Carolina Marine, falsely certified the engines BEFORE the sea trial.   The most serious problem was false low oil pressure alarms at low RPM.  Apparently, this condition is…

Where do you maintain the oil levels?       You should have two marks, one for full and one for add.    Which one do you maintain the level at. I ask because these engines often have a shallow pan.    If the oil level is maintained at the high level and you have  much of a tilt to the engine mounting the level can be whipped into a froth by the crankshaft,  bubbles  can which  can cause this problem.     They…

July 3, 2023 at 6:03 am I recently installed the SMX fuel cooler removal kit on both engines,.  This past weekend I finally put her in water and ran 20nm to my slip.  Babying it on the way down I noticed unusual activity with both oil pressure gages.  At idle stayed at 45 PSI and and increased to 52 running at 2100.  Prior to the combo block removal pressures were 5 psi at idle and 50+ at 2300, this was very consistent for the past 8 years.  Yesterday I ran her at 2450…

July 3, 2023 at 10:40 am I suggest installing a mechanical pressure guage on a TEE with the  existing pressure sensor for the dash gauges.       That will tell you which problem you have,  a goofy dash guage or a real problem.            Use a steel hydraulic TEE. for strength and vibration resistance. At the very least a FORGED brass TEE.   If it is a goofy guage check ALL the wiring between the sensor and the guage  and the actual guage power supply.    THe conne…

July 2, 2023 at 10:52 am It appears our engine issue has been resolved. Cummins replaced the lift pump, the low pressure pump and the on engine filter. Everything performed nominally on a sea trial following the repairs. It appears that the low pressure pump was out of tolerance and only delivering 30 psi when it should have been around 70 psi. We took the boat out on a 35 mile cruise, cruising at different RPM. The engine started normally and ran continuously with no R…
