I posted a few weeks back regarding our 6BTA 5.9 250 HP engine ceasing. We took the engine out of the boat and come to find out we believe the Sherwood GC5 Seawater Pump, in particular the nut is the culprit. When we started taking it apart the nut was not on the tapered shaft. What we did find was pieces of steal in the gears along with dents that provided us with evidence that the nut came off, got lodged in the gears, stopped the engine and also broke off a piece of the aluminum cover. See pictures below.

    Has anyone ever experienced this?

This pump was installed in August and we pulled the boat from the water for winterizing (we are in Alaska) shortly after. We maybe did 3-4 trips after install. We had a local marine shop install the pump.

Do they need to take the nut off or does it all install as one piece?

It looks like it could go on as one piece without needing to touch the nut but would like to see if we can get confirmation.

If it is all installed as one piece has anyone ever experience receiving a pump where the nut was not torqued appropriately?

Did you make an insurance claim? As we know, not all policies are created equal and that is especially true about mechanical breakdown coverage but a top-tier policy should cover this.

Thanks for the reply Tony. Yes, we did get it through you guys at SB Mar. I’ve included more pictures that we took of the pump and gear.

We do have vessel insurance.

    Sherwood GC5 Pumps issues ??

Based of what you have posted, I have never seen this exact type of failure. A genuine GC-5 comes complete and does not need to messed with to install.

    Questions?

–Genuine Sherwood GC5? I ask as there are “copies” out there

–Purchased from ?? If it came from us, we buy them from Transpacific Dist in the SF Bay area ( a BIG Sherwood dist)

    –Do you have vessel insurance?
