fuel cooler removal continues to be a problem
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
January 1, 2023 at 7:42 pm I am working through removing the fuel cooler on my 2001 6bta5.9 330. I didn’t realize the kit contains a 3/8 return nipple – i think i can source 1/2″ locally to match my return hose. The fuel inlet hardware to the lift pump can’t fit since I have a relocated fuel filter to the stbd side of the engine. Can’t rock that banjo fitting aft nor will the hose reach if i swing it up forward out of the way. I will inves…

6BTA short oil diptick?
This topic has 7 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
December 21, 2022 at 10:07 am Hi, I’m trying to find the correct part number for the short dipstick that threads into the aluminum oil pan on my 6BTAs. I want to change the long dip stick that comes up the sides of the engines to the short version I’ve seen in some other 6BTs. Can anyone provide the part #? Thank you.
7 RepliesJanuary 2, 2023 at 8:40 am Thanks Tony. No worries. I could also take one of the original dipsticks, measure tip protrusion into the pan, thread engagement and cut to make shorter accordingly, keeping all equal at the actual oil level measurement portion that matters. Also confirming with your write up on oil capacity etc. I bought new long dipsticks months ago. So I can modify one of the original ones no problem to test this, then modify the new dipsticks.

6CTA M2 420hp fuel lift pump leaks
This topic has 4 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
January 1, 2023 at 7:28 am Happy New Year! When manually priming one of my engines, fuel started leaking out of the rubber bellows covering the manual pump piston. I believe the seal is shot but there don’t appear to be rebuild kits for these pumps. The SBMAR store only shows the newer style pumps (M3). Other Cummins part sellers list a variety of lift pumps with different part numbers: 3936318, 3917998, and 3917999, none of which cross-reference the others, so pres…

QSM11 running temperatures

January 28, 2017 at 4:59 am Is there a chart that gives an idea of the temperatures a Ā QSM11 Ā 670 hp should run at? I know the thermostats open at 160 degF and mine get to about 175 @ 22knots 70% load but lately have been creeping toĀ about 178- 180 .At what temps should I start to worry about doing the Heat Exchangers?
7 RepliesJanuary 1, 2023 at 1:18 pm Your Power curve will be attached as soon as Corey sorts out a current glitch.. If you want is sooner, drop me a note . Just stay on course with what ever you are doing now.. . If you wanted, you could get a 180-185 Stat and make things a tad more efficient and keep the oil cleaner if you were into oil analysis..

Onan MDKAL Injector Leak?
This topic has 5 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
December 29, 2022 at 3:20 pm This is a 2001ish Onan Cummins MDKAL generator, with 440 hours.Ā I have been seeing diesel in the pan (perhaps 1 table spoon per hour) the last few weeks and today worked to track it down.Ā I found diesel leaking from the injector – not exactly clear where (see the picture).Ā There is a noticable amount of red dyed diesel at the base and discoloration on the injector compared to the others.Ā This runs down the side, and pools in the pan be…
5 RepliesDecember 30, 2022 at 5:08 pm Hope it worked.. Fuel dilution:Ā Do you run the generator at very low loads for hours on end, like less than 10-30% (or less)Ā of the rating ?Ā If so,Ā that will do it. If this is the case, just change the oil more often if it worries you.

December 28, 2022 at 7:56 am My new to me trawler has a single Cummins 6BT M3 220 HP engine (cpl 8206). Iām seeing a small accumulation of fuel at the lift pump (Cummins part # 3904374) but canāt find where the fuel leak originates.Ā The input/output pump connections are dry and the engine mounting bolts are tight.Ā The fuel accumulation is happening with the engine off. December 26, 2022 at 4:06 pm Newbie here. I recently purchased a Mikelson 50 powered by 480 CEās. Just had the engines serviced by Coleman marine in San Diego before bring the boat up to San Pedro. While running the boat from SD to San Pedro and then this week from San Pedro to Catalina and back, I noticed the port running at slightly different numbers than Starboard.Ā Running at roughly 9.5 knots, Port is at 23% load and burning 4.2 gallons per hour. 1360 RPM. November 28, 2022 at 7:16 pm HelloĀ I have a 2011 Cabo 40 that just underwent full service including a top end rebuild on the stbd QSC600 and two new turbos. Ā We have sea trialed the boat 3 times and we are constantly getting just under 3000 rpm at WOT. Fuel burn and load look pretty good etc. wondering if these 600hp 8.3s with Zeus pods should be turning up over 3000. Attached are the screen shots of WOT today.Ā Ā

December 16, 2022 at 12:14 pm Hey Tony,Ā I searched the forum and did not come up with an answer for my application for which motor mount. I am running CPL741 4BT 150HP engines.Ā I want to upgrade the motor mounts and not sure which “durometer” I should use… In the description there are references to 4BTA and a 4B (naturally aspirated) not specific for 4BT 150HP I think I may have asked in the past but could not come up with anything upon forum search and e…
3 RepliesDecember 18, 2022 at 8:56 am Can’t tell for sure, but the physical dimensions of what you have look quite a bit smaller that our “purple mount” series.. Double/triple check dimensionsĀ Ā — minimum height needed, mounting hole centers and stud diameter.Ā If you feel you up to the task to adapt. I’d use 60’s on the gear and 50’s on the front.

December 9, 2022 at 7:49 am Currently I have a set of the older version smartcraft vessel views at the lower helm. I hooked up a second set of vessel view 403s at the upper helm (confirmed with Cummins that the architecture is correct). The startboard 403 displays data, but the port does not (confirmed that the gauges themselves work properly). The MUS ID on the port engine is set up as a slave, and the starboard is set as the master (1, 2 configuration). No matter what I …

FW Flushing Options

November 22, 2022 at 11:47 am I removed my fuel coolers when I installed SMX pumps.Ā Looking to start freshwater flushing after each use.Ā Can I add a bronze T adapter/ball valve in the hose replacing the fuel cooler between the output of the raw water pump and bottom of the aftercooler? From the t-adapter/ball valve I would have water lines going up to quick connects under the port and stbd gunnel for easy access. I have Southbay strainers (external wedge style).Ā No intern…

December 15, 2022 at 10:27 am I have aĀ 6BTA5.9M, Control Parts list: 2208 engine in my new to me boat. Ā I am trying to line up all the maintainence jobs and parts for this upcoming season. Ā If so where is it? Also, is the engine coolant heater the thermostat…
1 ReplyDecember 15, 2022 at 5:10 pm You do not have a coolant filter Who is guiding you on your list this “maintenance things to do”, especially since this is a new boat for you and most likely don’t have much real history or what’s been done as to the things that “really matter”.. You do know the entire seawater side on your engine is its “Life Blood” asĀ I often refer to it….. No mention of it????.Ā Ā

6BTA Oil leaking from Aftercooler
This topic has 6 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 1 year ago
December 13, 2022 at 11:11 am Hi.Ā I recently noticed that oil has been leaking out of the top part of the aftercooler.Ā Ā The aftercoolers were replaced about 6 months ago on both engines since the core had seized and wouldn’t budge.Ā Ā Originally, I thought the oil was coming from the small filter of the recently installed envirovent but after further investigation I am now thinking it is coming from the aftercooler.Ā The envirovent filter does leak moderate amount of …
6 RepliesDecember 14, 2022 at 3:12 pm Yes, many variables as noted by Tony, but there is always some level of oily mist running through the air side.Ā For example, here’s my two that I pulled apart a few days ago – these engines have no blowby, zero oil consumption and maybe a 1/4″ of collection in the puke bottles after a 100hr season.Ā Yet can see the oil residue on the fins on both after 3 seasons since last cleaning.

December 5, 2022 at 6:09 pm I have the opportunity to buy parts off of a 2012 6BTA-315 engine, I’m thinking: Turbo Charger, After Cooler, Fuel Pump and Injector Pump, Alternator, Fuel Injectors…etc., Are the parts compatible with the 6BTA5.9 M-3 engine model…?
