    • QSB HX zincs broke off, acid flush HX?

February 5, 2021 at 1:12 pm Twin QSBs. Freshwater flush installed and used religiously (installed Spring 2020, after the sbmar seawater protocol which I did Summer 2019) I was changing out pencil zincs and both the HX zincs broke off, and thereā€™s some clogging of the HX tubes at the bottom, with the built up zinc material. Canā€™t get to the tubes with a rod, should I just do an acid flush of the seawater circuit to clean that up? Or leave it be? Temps have been rock s…

    • QSB After Cooler O-Rings

February 5, 2021 at 12:43 am I am about to service my QSB 5.9 380 after cooler. Trouble is I am confused about whether to use the thick or thin O rings. From the pictures in your article ā€œB Series After cooler O-Ring Identificationā€ I should use the thin ones, but the Cummins spare parts website shows thick rings for my engine serial number. My boat was built in 2008, engine serial number 46824262. Any Ideas?

February 5, 2021 at 7:14 pm Thanks Tony, you are right as always and the spare parts web site is wrong. I have now pulled my after cooler apart and my O rings are definitely the thin ones. The story is that I serviced my after cooler about 18 months ago but I noticed I was getting a bit of grease bleeding out under the end caps, I also noticed a tiny bit of corrosion which is visible in the photo just under the water outlet. It occurred to me that the turbo air pressure ma…

    • Seawater pump belt removal on qsb5.9

This topic has 3 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byScott Lambert 3 years ago

May 26, 2018 at 10:51 am I have twin qsb5.9 440s on my boat. The engines have the newer seawater pump belt configuration but my manual only shows the older belt setup with an idler pulley. How do I remove and reinstall the belt if I canā€™t lessen it? Do I just get it off a little and then advance the engine to walk it off the pulley? Where do I put my wrench to advance the engine?

May 14, 2019 at 7:28 pm I am interested in replacing my Mercury marine smart craft computer. I have a 2009 Meridian with twin 5.9 cummins diesels. I have been told that because I also have a DTS throttle control system that I cannot replace the smart craft with an after market system. Is that true? What are my options? Thanks, Jon Arnold

August 5, 2020 at 5:45 am Has anyone replaced SmartCrap ? What are the options ? ( i have twin qsb 5.9 380s) I really like my analog gauges, one option is 2 smx screens per engine. from what i can tell that would require replacing wire harness as well Not sure how i feel about having 4 screens. Anyone who has done this How do you like it?

June 19, 2020 at 2:09 am I have a QSB380 12 years old with 1140 hours. The valve clearances have never been checked. So I guess it is time? QSOL says to use a special barring tool, which I do not have. Any alternatives? Do I need to loosen the injectors to turn the engine over? Any other tips? I did have a look in Tony Tips but couldn’t find anything specific

June 19, 2020 at 3:48 pm Thanks guys, I had it in my head that the service interval was 1000 hrs, but now I have re checked QSOL it is actually 5000. Everything sounds fine, so I think I will leave it for while. For info I tried the socket on the alternator pulley method but it didn’t work, the belt just slipped. Thats why I asked about the injectors. I totally agree though, messing with the injectors is beyond my pay grade. Maybe I need new belts after 12 years?

December 8, 2019 at 9:29 am Yes, Must be very careful as you get closer to pipe. But this is true if you use a knife or hack-saw. Also, once you cut through the wire reinforcement, the hose tends to “pop apart” and separate from the pipe. It makes it much easier to remove when it does that. Or as you get close to a complete cut-through, use a screw- driver blade to do the final separation. But must be really careful when Dremel, but a must for me when th…

September 9, 2019 at 3:46 am Engine hours are memorised by the ECM. So unless the ECM has been changed the total engine hours displayed on Vessel view will be correct. For example, if you replace a vessel view display with a new display (as I did with an SMX display) the correct hours will be displayed.

March 9, 2019 at 12:41 pm Hi Captains I am looking at a boat with twin QSB 5.9, 380hp boat with 5100 hours on them. Boat is 2005 and records show that 90% is trolling speed. I think they overhauled the turbos once. If the boat performs good reaching its rpm specification with no smoke and good reading on all gauges should I worry about the hours? I am planing to get the engine survey if everything goes right, but I figure to get some opinions here. thanks.

This topic has 19 replies, has 8 voices, and was last updated byJon Fitch 4 years ago

May 15, 2019 at 1:22 pm I have a QSB 5.9, idle is set to the standard 600. Can it be set up using the Cummins Insight software (or some other means)? I do not have the C-Cruise option. The alternator cannot keep up with the draw at that speed and I get low voltage warnings. At about 675 it is break even and no problems, so I’d like to get it set to 675. I’ve called two Cummins service reps and they don’t seem to know how.

May 28, 2019 at 12:54 pm If you can fit a smaller pulley without over speeding the alternators, that’s probably the easiest/cheapest route. I’ve run out of time to chase this but I think my ultimate solution involves a hair pin stator alternator, either Balmar’s or someone else’s. The Delco 24 and 28 are similar to the hair pin style.

May 21, 2019 at 3:12 pm While we are on the subject of QSB valve adjustment, my QSB 5.9 380hp is 11 years old with 1100 hours. As far as I am aware the valve lash has not been adjusted. When you say typical 5000 hrs between adjustments would that apply regardless of age? Or is it something that should be done every 10 years or so? QSOL says every 5000 hrs or 4 years but I have not heard of anyone doing it every 4 years.
