Justin RiegeModeratorHello there,
Corey and I are working on a new video and web article for fresh water flushing. We could use some good pics and/or video clips of fresh water flush setups. We know all you smart people out there have come up with a myriad of brilliant solutions. We would love to showcase a few of your unique ideas on our site and youtube channel.
Please email high res pics to [email protected]
Short video clips would be good too, but we can only use them if you are technically savvy enough to share in full resolution via, dropbox, google docs, or something like that.
Please share knowing that this may be used freely and openly on our site and youtube channel.
Thanks,
Justin

pwrobertParticipantFresh water manifold for engine flush selection
Spring of 2019 I launched after being out of the water with a repowering job on my 38 ft CC Commander. Detroit 8.2L Turbo’s were removed in exchange for Cummins 6 BTA Diamond 370’s. Tony and the crew helped design and fabricate the exhaust from their shop in California for me here in South Florida. All handled via email and a few phone calls. I don’t think Tony ever sleeps because we typically spoke at night Eastern time. As typical with a job like this there are a million other “upgrades” that are planned and others added as the destruction, cleanup and installation begins as they become apparent. As this boat had been repowered several times in it’s 50 year history and there was a lot of left over redundant wiring, hoses and fittings that were no longer needed – some left by previous installers and left as dead ends. Much of that was totally cleaned out.
When I was beginning this project and knew that the exhaust system was going to need something special I found Seaboard Marine’s website and began going through all of the Repower Projects, Tony’s Tips and product sales items available. Working with Tony in designing the engine/transmission mounts and both Tony and Corey on the exhaust systems allowed me to look at other systems that could get upgraded while doing this project. Other additions were removing all the previous engine wiring harnesses and putting in all new harnesses following the Cummins color code system, removing the previously installed AlgeXs from the fuel system and replacing them with a Fleetguard FS19513 and mount, SMX 1370 Raw water pumps and 160 degree thermostats. By the way Tony’s discussion of the water pump interference with the standard engine mounts led us to work out custom mounts that do not interfere with removal or replacement of the pumps.
What prompted this post is that I also installed the 2 inch bronze “T” in the inlet water hoses and plumbed them into the existing fresh water flush system that I already had for my 8Kw Generator. Three quarter inch reinforced hose runs from a Perko deck fitting that allows a garden hose to hook up on the back deck and supply fresh water to a 3-way manifold than now supplies each engine and the genset. The manifold is made from a 4-Way Ctoss Block fitting with hose barbs for the Incoming and three outgoing hoses. Ball valves on the Seaboard “T” adapters and one on the Genset inlet allow me to direct the fresh water to each engine in turn to flush as needed.
As an additional measure I have it setup so that sometimes I add Salt-Away or Salt-Off to the last couple of minutes each engine is flushed before turning them off.
Because my thru hull valve is located on the outboard side of the Starboard engine getting to it meant having to move the couch, pull up another floor board hatch then go through my previous routine of doing the flush with the thru hull closed. Because of this not being too handy the regularity of doing this suffered. The genset always got flushed and the port engine more so but getting to the starboard valve handle meant the starboard engine was the ugly stepsister.
After reading newest article and viewing the video I can say that the routine flush is now part of my shutdown punch list because of not having to close the thru hulls which makes my application so much easier. Thankfully the way I mounted the ball valves on the 2 inch bronze “T”s is not a holdup because those valves can easily reached from the normal service position between the engines. So with one hookup of the garden hose on the back deck and flipping three ball valves in the engine room the aftercoolers and heat exchangers are now getting the attention they deserve.

Fresh water flush Video
Just watched the seaboard video. Nice work, it answered all my questions and like the fact the seacock can remain open during the flush with the motor running.
Thanks

Some “clean machines” there ā¦. goes to show that fresh water flushing is just part of the equation with owners that maintain high standards and take pride in their vessels.

Posted these last year when I did this. Hoses are fed to my cockpit bait tank which I fill with fresh water and a little dish soap. I close the seacocks and draw non-pressurized fresh water from the bait tank. When I see suds out the back I know I’ve got 100% fresh water in the system and I’m done.

Flush Pictures
3/4 inch garden hose into top of raw water strainer. I keep the hose coiled up in the engine room when not in use.

December 10, 2019 at 9:57 am #84432Flushing caps purchased from Seaboard and installed last week. (Yes I know I have some green to remove!)
When connected to a 3/4 inch hose they do a great job and actually help to keep the strainers clean too. It was suggested by Cory to leave the intakes open but with the water flow we have on the dock they provide enough water to close the sea cocks which I do just before shut down to provide a total fresh flush.
The other picture does the generator.3 users thanked author for this post.
