    • QSB After Cooler O-Rings

February 5, 2021 at 12:43 am I am about to service my QSB 5.9 380 after cooler. Trouble is I am confused about whether to use the thick or thin O rings. From the pictures in your article ā€œB Series After cooler O-Ring Identificationā€ I should use the thin ones, but the Cummins spare parts website shows thick rings for my engine serial number. My boat was built in 2008, engine serial number 46824262. Any Ideas?

February 5, 2021 at 7:14 pm Thanks Tony, you are right as always and the spare parts web site is wrong. I have now pulled my after cooler apart and my O rings are definitely the thin ones. The story is that I serviced my after cooler about 18 months ago but I noticed I was getting a bit of grease bleeding out under the end caps, I also noticed a tiny bit of corrosion which is visible in the photo just under the water outlet. It occurred to me that the turbo air pressure ma…

    • Valve Clearances

This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byScott Lambert 3 years ago

June 19, 2020 at 2:09 am I have a QSB380 12 years old with 1140 hours. The valve clearances have never been checked. So I guess it is time? QSOL says to use a special barring tool, which I do not have. Any alternatives? Do I need to loosen the injectors to turn the engine over? Any other tips? I did have a look in Tony Tips but couldn’t find anything specific

June 19, 2020 at 3:48 pm Thanks guys, I had it in my head that the service interval was 1000 hrs, but now I have re checked QSOL it is actually 5000. Everything sounds fine, so I think I will leave it for while. For info I tried the socket on the alternator pulley method but it didn’t work, the belt just slipped. Thats why I asked about the injectors. I totally agree though, messing with the injectors is beyond my pay grade. Maybe I need new belts after 12 years?

    • Engine Oil Flush

August 12, 2019 at 1:14 am I am about to change the oil on my QSB 380. Do you recommend adding an oil flush product prior to draining the old oil? I have never used these type of products before, do you think they are worthwhile?

July 17, 2019 at 5:06 pm Hi all, I am about to overhaul my after cooler. Is it best to replace the hoses as a precaution or is it OK to re use the existing hoses if they are still in good condition?

October 31, 2018 at 7:19 pm Hi, I need to replace my 6 inch rubber exhaust hose. Any tips? Can I use some sort of lubricant to help the hose slide on without helping it slide off?

November 2, 2018 at 4:41 am Use the graphite gasket sold here. Block sand the face of the turbo outlet to clean it up. Gasket can go dry. High temp RTV silicon never hurts, especially if there are imperfections left in the mounting face. Anti-seize lube on new mounting bolts. https://www.sbmar.com/product-category/engine-components/turbochargers-parts/

    • Vessel View Fail

June 22, 2018 at 1:20 am I have attached a photo of my vessel view display looking pretty sick. It is just showing horizontal white lines across the screen. Any one seen this before? Could it be a connection or will it need replacing? I have unplugged the connections on the back which has made no difference.

September 24, 2018 at 3:23 pm I have attached photos of SMX up and running, very happy! I have also attached a photo of the old smart craft wiring. As Corey says, one of the benefits of this system is its simplicity. The space under my helm station used to be a mess of tangled wires, now it is relatively simple and uncluttered.

    • Need more hot water

This topic has 9 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated byScott Lambert 5 years ago

May 27, 2018 at 6:13 pm I have a QSB380 in my pleasure cruiser and often cruise at fairly low power, 1500 to 1800 RPM. Trouble is it takes a long time to heat enough water to have a hot shower. I was considering fitting a 12 volt circulation pump into the coolant line that runs to the hot water system. This would at least get coolant circulating faster through the HWS. Any one see any problems with this?

June 22, 2018 at 1:01 am I checked my engine and yep, that connection is there. Trouble is it needs a 1/2 inch NPT (according to Cummins quick serve web site) threaded stub pipe which I am having trouble finding. In the mean time I have fitted a circulation booster pump, photo attached. Gave it a test run today, excellent result. 20 minutes to heat the water even at low revs.

    • Electronic Throttle stuck at half

March 8, 2017 at 5:26 pm I’ve got an intermittent problem with my QSB 5.9. It won’t go to full power. The throttle position indicator on my vessel view display will show somewhere between 40 and 50% and I can only get about 1500 to 1600 RPM. There are no fault codes displayed. The problem will clear when the engine has been shut down for a while, but may come back at any time. However, if it runs Ok it will keep running Ok until it is shut down, and if power…
