Yanmar 6LY main heat exchanger color
This topic has 9 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 5 years ago
February 4, 2019 at 9:04 am Please look at the attached photo. I am helping a friend who is considering buying a 2006 Mainship Pilot 34 with a Yanmar 6LY 370 hp engine. A “Yanmar Certified Technician” who was present at the seatrial said that the main heat exchanger, which is very visible in this pic, is discolored and is a sign of severe overheating. Well the color is certainly not the Yanmar silver grey, but it is entirely uniform and doesn’t look like…
9 RepliesFebruary 4, 2019 at 7:31 pm I wish I had a much better picture so I could really “SEE”, but even a “fuzzy” view tells me that this engine, when it ran or did run, is being squeezed to the max, plus the signs of a loss of coolant in the combo exhaust manifold/coolant tank are more than obvious…………..Walk away unless someone gets a $25-30K concession on the $$.. The 6LYA is a very good engine, and IMO, is as good as a 370 …

January 13, 2019 at 3:03 pm Cummins 6BTA. 380ish hours Running perfectly with no issues. Racor 1000s had some gunk in the bottom so I pull it apart, clean it, change filter and replace filter. Fill the racor, and go to prime and she doesn’t seem to prime. Fire her up and she doesn’t like it. Runs for a few then sputters out. Only thing I touched was the filter. I took the below vlinked video cause it shows the sound I’m getting when I’m priming…
4 RepliesJanuary 21, 2019 at 8:17 pm I had a cracked 5 cent oring on the t handle that had me stumped for hours, she would prime and start but would sputter out after a while.

January 11, 2019 at 7:25 pm Hello All, Can anyone tell me if this 2006 5KW generator has a replaceable zinc? Can’t find any obvious sign of one. Thanks.

6LYA-STP Turbo exhaust question
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 5 years ago
December 22, 2018 at 4:19 pm I took off the turbo exhaust riser and mixer to replace a stringer and I noticed some discoloration on the exterior of the turbo exhaust. Was curious if this is normal or something that needs to be looked into further.
1 ReplyDecember 22, 2018 at 7:44 pm Send me those pics direct in High Res.. Also stand back 2-5 ft , (or what is needed).. I want to “see” your exhaust mixer/riser or what ever you have as installed in your boat.. [email protected] Tony

99 cat 3208ta raw water pump impeller

December 18, 2018 at 9:23 pm I’m trying to find impellers for a cat 3208 raw water pump. Browsing around the internet it looks like a 17000p impeller is the right one. Anyone know if that will work? I put it on here rather than call so it might help someone else out.
4 RepliesDecember 19, 2018 at 9:20 am I’m not up on exactly when Cat used which pump but the 3208 could take a Sherwood or a Jabsco so check the pump cover carefully for pump ID…

Hose clamps
This topic has 5 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 5 years ago
October 11, 2018 at 8:36 am I’m about to buy all new hoses for my 6btas but I have a question about the spring loaded hose clamps. Many of the old hoses on my boat leak unless I cinch the clamps all the way tight… which seems to me defeats the point of the spring loaded feature. With new hoses and clamps, how tight to you make them?

July 29, 2017 at 2:14 pm Hi everyone …I am new on this forum…i would really appreciate a lot if i could get some suggestions in order to solve problem with my Yanmar 6lya-stp 370hp. I am owner of 33ft semi displacement boat located in Europe-Croatia. Recently i installed used yanmar engine with 1100 working hours. Proppeler size is 21×26 and according to calculation it should not be to big to cause over-propping problem. Black smoke starts at about 1…
40 RepliesOctober 28, 2018 at 6:12 am Let’s SEE your engines entire Crank Case Ventilation System…………..Just a factory hose going to ?? Not over filled in the crank case/oil pan ? More IS NEVER better on very shallow sump HIGH-RPM Engines in a planing boat. Usually the opposite works better (running on the low mark or even a tad below) when you have possible blow-by or oil whipping issues.

October 20, 2018 at 7:32 am Hi Tony/Corey, Thanks for all of the great information that you post online. It’s a huge help for us. We are working through a prop issue on a straight inboard center console (29′) with a 6LYA 370 that we bought used recently and have been refitting and had a question regarding boost. If it was a saltwater boat, I would walk as the parts in the cooling system are crazy $$.. If I remember correctly, the engine has like 12 zincs and all are proprietary Yanmar? Dry turbo (don’y really like that like) and the seawater pump drive has had issues to where the most of the front of the engine needs to tore down to get to it. I know of 2 of these t…

180hp cummins to 210 hp cummins

October 12, 2018 at 3:31 pm Hi Tony I have a 31 Bertram with 2 180hp cummins diesels that are old but run just great with no major issues. My top end speed is about 16 knots at max rpm on both engines. I am running 20 x 20 props behind twin disc 2:1 running gear. I heard from the local gallery change the props, change the gear, change the injector pump etc. I would like to keep these engines until they die. What can I do to increase the hp to at least 210hp and get more s…
2 RepliesOctober 15, 2018 at 12:31 pm Excellent response. Would changing from these twin disc to 1.56 ZF 63a’s be almost seamless as far as size or would I need more modifications. Thanks. Capt. Mike

Re-power MerCruiser 5.7 Horizon MPI to a Yanmar 4LHA-STE 230hp

September 15, 2018 at 9:32 am Hi Guys, Has anyone had any experience re-powering a boat from a MerCruiser 5.7 MPI to a Yanmar 4LHA-STE 230hp? I was curious if there was any performance gains with the re-power… I have a 27′ H&H lobster boat with a MerCruiser 5.7 MPI with a 2.5:1 ZF63a gearbox, 1.5″ shaft, and a 20″x17″ 4-Blade propeller. Right now she cruises 14kts at 3400 RPM’s. Ideally, I would like a 17-18kt cruise. Any insight…
4 RepliesSeptember 16, 2018 at 9:40 am Noting that matters–The 230 was an early rating with hotter fuel used in a test cell.. Later on, Yanmar rated the engine in a test cell using colder fuel, hence the engine could make 10 HP more at WOT/3300+ RPM… Tony

September 10, 2018 at 2:19 pm is it ok to use a winterizing anti freeze that has alcohol in it in a 6cta-8 engine
3 RepliesSeptember 12, 2018 at 4:22 am If you can drain the water from the coolers first (remove zincs and reinstall) and drain your mufflers then you don’t have to worry about any dilution issues and you will use less. Depending on you setup 6 gallons should be more than enough to ensure a solid pink out the back. Here’s 6 gallons ran through my 6BTA’s. I do pull the zincs to drain the seawater so the engine is getting straight pink as soon as she fires and pul…

Priming bulb inline w/o valving
This topic has 2 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 5 years ago
September 6, 2018 at 1:02 pm I’m about to order up a double double filtration kit, but still debating on the squeeze bulb kit. I don’t mind the expense, but it won’t fit in my engine hold. There’s barely enough room for the double double kit. From what I’ve read of Tony’s posts, it seems like the only significant concern with priming bulbs is one of flow restriction – hence, the valving to bypass the bulb in the complete kit sold he…
2 RepliesSeptember 6, 2018 at 4:52 pm Thanks, Rob. Can’t believe I didn’t think of that before. Basically, I’d just planned on swapping out the Racor 500 for the double double in the current engine hold location, assuming it was there for a reason. I could certainly remove the Racor completely, splicing the fuel line together. There is indeed, a ton more space by the tanks under the cockpit than in the engine hold. The double double would easily fit there and actua…

Yanmar 4LH-TE – Proper Oil Filter?

September 1, 2018 at 12:20 pm OK…on paper, this seems obvious. However in person and with products in hand, not so much. I’ve got two oil filters for a Yanmar 4LH-TE in hand, and they couldn’t be more different. Let’s start with the original filter. I have the original build sheet for my 1988 Nordic Tug which contains many details, including the Yanmar oil and filter part numbers. 119100-35100 is listed for the oil, and while there’s a WIX insta…
3 RepliesSeptember 5, 2018 at 1:32 pm Well Tony…I gotta live with what I have, crap or otherwise. Now…when our upgrade to a Nordic 32/37 happens in a couple years, I’ll definitely bend your ear on those. All eras we are interested in are Cummins equipped. Rob – thanks much for the pointer to Bayshore Marine. Prompt response, very knowledgeable …

1 ReplyAugust 27, 2018 at 3:59 am There is only one serial number “issue” for the 6LY2(A) that I am familiar with. Serial # M56928 circa 2005 when the heads on the 6LY2A were improved using inconel valves. But that’s when they were calling it the 440, no longer the 420. Your serial number is way earlier than that head upgrade era. A remanufactured head should be available with the Inconel valves. You would have to contact Mack Boring or Mastry to check o…

Exhaust Elbow Doomed?

June 22, 2018 at 9:24 pm I’ve posted this question before about different boats/engines but this is another and I’m still not sure what to look for exactly. 1998 Jefferson 48. Volvo 72P-A motors. 430 HP. The raw water entrance to the elbow is high but sort of slopes down. Still doomed to fail? Also, anybody know what the P-A refers to on these engines? There is no throttle cable attached to the fuel pump lever arm so I presume there is an electronic control…
9 RepliesJuly 9, 2018 at 6:14 pm That sounds pretty reasonable. Certainly better than the jacketed doomed to fail ones that cost about $4500 from Cummins the last time I checked. Thanks again for all the good advice.

Pyro/boost install on Yanmar 6ly

June 24, 2018 at 7:05 am I am going to add a pyro/boost monitoring system on my 2006 Yanmar 6ly-stp (370hp) engines. Based on Tony’s advice, I know where to tap into the boost pressure and the pyro probe before the Turbo, however, I’d like the probe to go after the turbo. Replacement Tach for Yanmar

I want to replace with accurate tachs. I have a tower that does not have tachs so I want to add 2 sets. One set for both stations. I need recommendations for tachs and sensors.
