OK…on paper, this seems obvious. However in person and with products in hand, not so much. I’ve got two oil filters for a Yanmar 4LH-TE in hand, and they couldn’t be more different.

Let’s start with the original filter. I have the original build sheet for my 1988 Nordic Tug which contains many details, including the Yanmar oil and filter part numbers. 119100-35100 is listed for the oil, and while there’s a WIX installed currently – I actually found an original Yanmar oil filter in one of the holds, still new in box with the original part number. The WIX closely matches the Yanmar, externally anyway – I’ve yet to remove it.

Upon searching out this original part number, it shows as being superseded by 119005-35100, 119005-35100-12, & 119005-35151. Wanting to stick with OEM filters, I found a good deal on the latter part number, so I picked up a few.

However, once it arrived – the difference is striking. Yes, it appears to have the same threads and the o-ring appears to line up – but in every other respect, it couldn’t be more different. More inlet holes, and it’s about 1/4 the size of the original.

I’ve read Tony knows Yanmars intimately, so I’m hopeful he’ll see this and respond – but if anyone else can comment on this one way or another, I’d appreciate it. This isn’t the kind of thing I care to roll the dice on.

    Pics attached, showing everything.

Well Tony…I gotta live with what I have, crap or otherwise. Engine runs beautifully and I can’t justify doing anything other than keeping it running while I own the boat. Now…when our upgrade to a Nordic 32/37 happens in a couple years, I’ll definitely bend your ear on those. All eras we are interested in are Cummins equipped.

Rob – thanks much for the pointer to Bayshore Marine. Prompt response, very knowledgeable on the small Yanmars and they got me sorted ASAP. They’re my new go-to source for Yanmar maintenance items.

    Yanmar Filters

That filter looks like they sent you the wrong one. Do some poking around here as to superseded part numbers and what fits what. Maybe give them a phone call when they re-open next week. The guys at Bay Shore are good with Yanmar parts.

    Yanmar Oil filter–4LHTE

    Will,

Unfortunately I am not at all current with what Yanmar is doing these days….Once they dropped the 3 models of engines that I really liked ( 4LHA, 6LPA, 6LYA) , I walked away from all.. I have no use for “chainsaw diesels” with crap marinization and zero support besides.

But with that said, I would tend to believe that IF YANMAR now sells a completely / newly designed filter for this engine, and you have checked & double checked with Yanmar that this is the new filter # for your exact engine, then I’d leave it at that and use it long before I’d use an after market “will-fit” oil filter.. You might look for a Yanmar bulletin on this.

    Tony
