Debris in algae in fuel?
This topic has 5 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
April 13, 2021 at 4:25 pm New to this forum. Have twin VP IPS D6 435 hp engines. Primary racor to the “last chance” engine mounted oem VP fuel filter. Had a rougher cruise back to winter storage in the fall – a bit over an hour run. Had to come off plane for a no wake and then back up on plane and had my stbd engine cut when going up on plane. Limped to the marina at <1500 rpm. Have a racor before the engine mounted filter as the primary filter…
5 RepliesApril 13, 2022 at 7:47 am I missed the boatĀ Should have suggested better filtering also. If you add another filter, mud fltr,Ā add the telltale vacuum guages.Ā Ā They will help tip you off to the filters gathering stuff rather than waiting for a power loss or shutdown.Ā Ā The telltales will tip you off even without watching as the one needle will stay at the highest reading untillĀ YOU reset it. Ā Check Seaboard’s listings.

Yanmar 3JH2LTE 25hp White smoke at startup
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
February 28, 2022 at 4:42 pm Good day, I have Khohler 13KW generator on a boat with a pair of 6CTAās. Generator has 2200 hours and produce a lot of white smoke at startup and excess diesel is visible in the water. I am certain it is not water vapor. I have tried a number of easy things and followed the service manual trouble shooting. Engine starts immediately – no knocks or shudders. Smoke continues for about 4 minutes if I put the genset under load and after 4 minut…
3 RepliesMarch 3, 2022 at 1:52 pm Thanks again for the guidance. Valve clearance to spec per Khohler / Yanmar docs. Compression test cold 285, 250, 250. Next step leak down or is the acceptable and pointing to another issue.

CAT C-12 ACERT RE-MAN OIL ANALYSIS
This topic has 12 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
December 29, 2021 at 5:44 am Installed one year ago on a 38 Wesmac bridge Downeaster. Multiple issues with control panels, shut off switches, the ECM module (replaced twice) – all covered under warranty but a lot of downtime. Charter boat, Ā 800 hours, always ran boat 60% +/- load, probably 500 of these hours drifting, 600-700 rpmās. Current issue – aft starboard oil leak, plus HIGH metal content via most recent oil analysis. CAT has not yet looked at oil leak, a…
12 RepliesJanuary 2, 2022 at 8:29 pm Yes, in their hands really, one person versus large corporation. You have given me more data to fight the fight, āwhy did you ok the engine when it didnāt meet your guidelines etcā. Even with replacement engine, still have that base design, so still need to pitch down and baby her, which I think I do anyways. Long odds to get replacement, but if they give me 4 more years warranty at least that covers repair costs, but not downtime. Iāll keep doc…

Cat C9 – Aftercoolers
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
October 13, 2021 at 7:16 am We recently put an offer on a 2008 42ā Riviera in South Texas (with a Seakeeper). Great boat, and well maintained (for the area). Flew out last weekend for survey(s) and happy to say thank both went quite well. I brought my own mechanic from home as I donāt trust most mechanics east of California The boat is an 08. The engines are 07 with 2500 hours. Itās obvious the owner did MOST of his scheduled maintenance. I believe the engine is rated for …
1 ReplyOctober 14, 2021 at 3:10 pm I used to have a pair of (smaller) CAT c7s of about the same vintage. Similar to C9s in many ways, including the HEUI pumps and so forth. For what it is worth, CAT recommendation (in Australia, at least) for replacement of the aftercooler cores on C7s was every 6 years. If you call a local CAT dealer, they will be able to look it up on a computer and confirm over the phone the lengthy of time for a C9. If the seller had ever replaced the cores …

September 13, 2021 at 10:23 am Hi Guys, I just recently purchased a Detroit Diesel 4-53 Natural for a Dyer 29. Does anyone know how much horsepower I can get out of it if I turbo it? Thanks, Pat
3 RepliesSeptember 14, 2021 at 1:08 pm I have “seen” 4-53’s with turbos but I doubt Detroit did it.. Probably aftermarket like J&T or ??

Turbocator Installed- EGT not showing
This topic has 11 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
August 27, 2021 at 5:47 am Hello, Longtime listener first time caller. Just installed the Turbocator on my boat. Twin CAT3208TA engines. No performance issues but heard having these gauges was essential to keeping track of engine health. 1. For some EGTās are not showing at all. Pretty straight forward install. Installed probe, used SBMAR supplied connectors and attached leads to gauge. Nothing showing. Did I miss something? 2. I know I have CATs, but had que…

Yanmar 4LHA-STP fittings for hot water tank hoses
This topic has 3 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
August 21, 2021 at 7:44 am I’m not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question but I have seen many positive comments from Tony about theses engines so I decided to ask here. I was in search of a boat with 5.9 BT or 5.9BTA engines because of the known reliability and longevity. Unfortunately the boats that we liked powered with theses engines ended up having issues. (Not engine issues) We found a boat we liked with twin 4LHA-STP engines, 850 hours 80 % fres…
3 RepliesAugust 21, 2021 at 5:43 pm As I said it’s been years ( 10+) since I have dealt with these Yanmar’s.. IMO, assume NPT at this point. When in Yanmar school a long time ago, I was told the “A” used in the Yanmar model means it was made for us Yankee’s.. ..

August 20, 2021 at 10:14 am I am looking at a boat currently powered with Mitsubishi 6414t diesels (265hp), mated to zf 220 a gears. Any info on these engines?
1 ReplyAugust 21, 2021 at 11:37 am No real info in my archives, but I am sure they are beyond obsolete and have zero real support .. Lots of these old Mitsubishi’s on Ebay.

Info on cat C12.9? Good motor?
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
August 17, 2021 at 9:57 am Looking for info folks have on cat c12.9’s. Doesn’t seem to be a ton of info on the internet, at least from the searching I’ve done. Even cat’s website seems to have very little info. Sounds like it may be a re-branded Italian made engine? Looks like its a completely different engine than the c12, and has only been out for a few years. About 500 lbs lighter and 6″ shorter than the c18, but twin turbos and displac…

CAT 3196 Raw water system maintenance

August 1, 2021 at 10:14 am This off season will be my first time servicing the aftercoolers, heat exchangers, trans oil coolers and fuel coolers. Would anyone have any documentation and/or videos showing the removal and cleaning process of these components?
1 ReplyAugust 1, 2021 at 5:28 pm This is all I have. If its seawater side servicing section is anything like Cummins from those years, It’s 100% worthless This engine from CAT in those years had a multitude of issues, many directly related to the aftercoolers……………………With that said, think of it the same way we deal with a Cummins aftercooler– Good articles on this site. Good luck in your “journey” going…

Kohler Generator stalled and won’t start

July 19, 2021 at 7:06 pm Kohler 15.5EOZ, 2005 with 1,350 hours cut off on me while offshore the other day. Could not get it to restart, It cranks strong but will not catch. I’m assuming something with fuel. I changed the primary Racor (which looked fine) and the secondary engine spin on just to be sure. That didn’t help. I cracked one of the injectors on the engine and cranked – no fuel came out. I worked my way backwards from there and found a line fr…
3 RepliesJuly 31, 2021 at 5:18 pm Had changed the filter in the Racor, but got some advice to take it apart. Found this lovely little algae snake in where the ball check valve is. All good now,

July 7, 2021 at 10:11 am Shot in the dark – thanks in advance. 2 RepliesJuly 11, 2021 at 6:18 pm 1989 freshwater. 1500 hours. Otherwise working perfectly. Injector pump is Stanadyne model DB2-4323, RPM 1800, serial # 6282566, Nameplate part # 147-0101-03 but OEM parts manual shows 147-0461-03. Since my original post the gen will now shut down w/ Stop switch. Perhaps exercising the solenoid as I noted above freed up some gunk. It *looks* like the top part of the pump is field serviceable [but I’m no mechanic] without removing the pu…

Increasing 300hP to 370 hP

July 3, 2021 at 4:04 pm I”m trying to increase hP of my 6BTA 5.9 L 300hP to 370 hP, changing my Bosch injectors with Nippondenso pump. I want to know if I need any other modification or adjustment to diesel pump. Thanks
1 ReplyJuly 4, 2021 at 9:28 am SIMPLE ANSWER = Not even close to a cost effective change, and that’s if you could even get the parts to do it.. ..And in the end, you are talking 355 HP @ 3000-3150 RPM vs 300 Hp at 2800-2950 RPM. Post a seaial number– The are many versions on the older 6BTA 5.9 ND pump M-2 engines..

6LYA-STE Aftercooler Corrosion
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 years ago
April 2, 2021 at 2:02 pm I’ve been going thru this new to me engine over the winter. Getting the core out of the aftercooler took some doing. I had to have a “press plate” made that was slightly small in diameter than the housing inner diameter. Then I heated the whole assembly some with an IR heater, and proceeded to push it out with a shop press. This was after soaking each end in acetone and ATF for weeks while I waited for the press plate. Once it …

Yanmar 230 HP Engine mount Alternative

February 23, 2021 at 3:30 pm Hi Tony I have the 230HP 4LHA-STP Yanmar motors in my Bertram 28 in which I am looking at replacing the engine mounts. I saw your reply to Bill Fuller’s comments in 2018 and you suggested the R&D PYI engine mounts with a capacity per mount of 120-410lbs. I am in Australia and R&D don’t supply that mount here and have suggested two alternatives, one with a capacity of 300-683lbs capacity per mount and the other with a capacit…

6LY blow-by
This topic has 1 reply, has 1 voices, and was last updated by 3 years ago
March 1, 2021 at 10:38 am Curious what you think of this piping arrangement for adding your collection bottle to handle blow-by puke. I added a 1″x3/4″ reducer just after the current T connector on top of the valve cover. Ran a length of 3/4″ directly off the back and down the side of my transmission to your collection bottle T. Then back up to my intake filter.

February 18, 2021 at 5:45 pm Hi all, New to me boat is a 1998 Bounty 293, 17,000 pounds (weighed myself) with single Yanmar 6LYA-STE (350hp), 3k hours. Seems in reasonable condition with no perceivable blow-by at the fill cap. I’m only getting 3000 RPM (strobe verified) and 20 knots at WOT and was on the verge of repitching the prop to achieve 3300+. I bought a SBMAR Turbocator which worked great to collect boost and exhaust data (after turbo). I’ve since compa…

1 ReplyJanuary 15, 2021 at 8:03 am You have ZF 302IVs using an EB 15 control valve Your issue does not sound gear related, but to be sure, remove the plug attached to the valve.. That is the only interface to the engine controls. You can then test shift into gear manually — https://www.sbmar.com/articles/zf-shift-solenoid/ My guess– The Volvo engine control head and /or some bad wires/connections in that area
