May 8, 2017 at 9:21 am In an effort to not ignore the basics, I’m posting these tips on replacing zincs. The aftercooler and heat exchanger zinc cap threads are 1/2″npt and the gear cooler zincs caps are 3/8″npt.Ā  Having taps of each size in your “zinc kit” is a good idea so you can chase those threads clean.Ā  Thread the new pencils onto your caps and snug them up you do not want them coming lose and banging up the tube ends of your coole…

    • Cracked turbo? QSB5.9-380

September 7, 2021 at 4:34 pm 2006 Tiara Open 3600, twin Cummins QSB5.9-380s, around 1,010 hours. I purchased boat in July 2020 out of fresh water, and now it’s in salt water. Engines generally start/run great, just traveled Boston to NYC and back. Thought I noticed a little white smoke one or two times in my exhaust, but then it seemed to go away. I changed the coolant last winter, and after 45+ hours of use this season, just had to refill my overflow (once). So i…

October 4, 2021 at 3:39 am Tony, Just getting back from Trawlerfest in Baltimore. Yes our mechanic did secure 2 heads. We are slated for head replacement over the winter layup. We will also get the Pyros installed that I bought earlier this year. I am changing the oil in the mains and transmissions this week and then we get hauled out the following week. Then the fun begins as we are also having serious work done on the navigation electronics. Big winter for us.

December 29, 2018 at 6:04 pm Group: When changing zincs I pulled the end caps of the heat exchangers and one had a bit more deposits than I would care for. One was far worse than the other, but I’d like to remove them both and either service them myself or have them done. Either way, I want to do the R&R myself. Draining the raw water side is no problem. On the coolant side, it would seem that saving the coolant is the way to go. I can’t find a specifica…

December 31, 2020 at 3:35 pm I have a 2005 that also does not have the convenient drain plug. You can either pull the turbo hose or the hose that goes up to the expansion tank. I choose the expansion tank hose as it is a bit easier to deal with. Either way is likely to be a bit messier than using the drain plug.

    • Qsb 5.9 – Lift pump problem?

This topic has 7 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated byjoethomas30 3 years ago

September 15, 2020 at 4:07 pm Hi folks, I’m wondering what are the symptoms of a bad lift pump. My qsb 5.9 is not starting. I changed Racors, on engine filter, position sensors, fuel pressure sensor, and fuel actuator. I primed the filter by running the lift pump until fuel came out of the two ports on top of the filter. Fuel rail is definitely getting fuel. So it seems like the lift pump is working, but is it possible that it’s weak? Does the lift pump need to …

January 2, 2019 at 3:40 am I am on my second full year of ownership of a 390 sundancer. January 4, 2019 at 4:44 pm Sirs, I received this error after starting up our qsb 5.9. I shut down the engine then re started with no error. The same sequence occurred the next day. The Diesel View manual says 2265 is high signal voltage at the electric supply/lift pump circuit. So what does this mean and how do I fix it? Thank You, Steve

August 29, 2019 at 12:38 pm Iā€™ve established already through this forum that my exhaust is all downhill, and I can hook up a FWF setup into the port on the seawater pump for engine off flushing. I also believed that I was reducing corrosion on my raw water metal components, particularly the after cooler. Tony has implied that you can double the inte…

July 30, 2018 at 11:27 am This is a question which may cause me to modify my fresh water flushing approach. First, if anyone can check my calculation, that would be great. Iā€™m not around so he had someone look at the engine. Seemed like the turbo looked a little oily is how he described it. Turbo was free and turned free. Took the boat out and it ran great and 2900 rpm with no smoke. Any ideas?

August 4, 2018 at 6:51 am The fuel burn numbers of an identical engine @ say 2,000-2,400 rpm will obviously vary in different hulls. It’s all dependent on how much hp is required to move a hull in the water at a given speed. I’ll make a guess that a 33 Tiara is “on the hump” plowing water getting up on plane @ 2,000 rpm. Takes a lot of hp to get a big planing hull up on plane. Once on plane……takes less hp to push the hull. Example: I&…
