    • Leaking SMX pump

August 31, 2020 at 6:09 am I bought two new SMX pumps in late 2014 and installed them on my 450 Diamonds. The hard to get to port pump has started leaking. Pictures of good starboard pump and suspect port pump. Notice port pump has green all around water weep holes to drain water when water seal fails. Starboard pump is pristine there. I plugged bottom most weep hole with dry paper towel and ran engine for five minutes. When I pulled out the towel the inside of it wa…

October 29, 2020 at 12:03 pm Humpty Dumpty is back together. First picture is the cleaned out housing ready for the new seal. Second picture is the new main seal installed. That went in easy pushing with gloved fingertips. Final picture is with the shaft seal and cap locked in place with the retaining clip. To push the clip in place I used a piece of 1ā€ pvc pipe. It was the right inside diameter to push the clip down until it snapped into its shaft groove.

April 27, 2020 at 9:28 am Ready to service my HX’s and wondering if there are any tips or protocol similar to the Aftercooler protocol. All I can really find is people doing a recirculating flush with Rydlyme or similar but I’ve not seen anything about removing the core and doing a bench type service. Also wondering if a healthy application of Alco Metalube to the end parts is recommended as in the Aftercooler protocol. Thanks for any tips/pictures.

    • Water filter with additive for C-Series Cummins

March 1, 2017 at 8:37 am I’ve owned my 2005 Sea Ray with twin 480 CEs for less than a year.Ā  I had a reputable diesel tech do the winterizing/maintenance last fall and I supplied the filters, zincs, etc.Ā  The previous owner used a Fleetguard WF2073 water filter so that is what I bought.Ā  However, looking into the issue further I see this filter supplies 8 units of DCA4 coolant additive, and other part numbers are available with more, less, or none of the additive.…

April 26, 2020 at 1:14 pm Hello. I’ve enjoyed all the posts about fresh water flushing. I currently have flush connections on my strainers that I connect the hose to directly. I’d like to add a ball valve and quick disconnect to avoid having to screw the hose connection on and make it much quicker. Just wondering if you guys see any issues with a quick disconnect type connection? Also, after shutting engine down and the fresh water is still on, does the e…

August 16, 2018 at 6:47 pm Hi guys What engine paint should I use to tidy up some sea water leak rust stains etc on my 1997 6CTA Cummins 450’s? I’d prefer brush on rather than aerosol due to the engine room confines and fiddly nature of the touch ups. Cummins South Pacific quote beige paint in oil 3885999 and water 3885925 based. Which is better or can I simply get the local auto paint shop to make me some paint using a formula or color sample? Does anyone hav…

May 22, 2019 at 8:37 pm I think the 6CTA is a whiter paint is it not over the 6BTA? I have been using dulux fast dry enamel for some non critical bits and on the genset (another ignored mechanical item I am finding!) they do an antique white which may be a closeish match for the whiter cummins paint. If not I guess you are down to a auto paint shop and get them to colour match and mix for you.. I have done this in cans before.. Steve

March 15, 2019 at 5:28 pm I have a 270 HP Cummins 6BTA in a 2005 Nordic Tug. The engine has about 3400 hours and is typically operated at about 1400 RPM.
