I’ve owned my 2005 Sea Ray with twin 480 CEs for less than a year.  I had a reputable diesel tech do the winterizing/maintenance last fall and I supplied the filters, zincs, etc.  The previous owner used a Fleetguard WF2073 water filter so that is what I bought.  However, looking into the issue further I see this filter supplies 8 units of DCA4 coolant additive, and other part numbers are available with more, less, or none of the additive.  How important is it to choose the proper amount of DCA4?  Is it harmful to have too much?  Should I buy some of the Cummins test strips to check my coolant?

    Thanks Tony.!

    PS

    For sale – 2 x WF2073s. Going cheap! 🙂

If you started with good coolant, a WF2073 should go 1000 hours with no issues..

    Hi

Mine has WF2073 Fleetguard fitted at last service, so I have spares for that.

Tony – any suggestion on how often to replace? They were last done about 15 months ago.

    Cheers

    Tony

I tried to order the same coolant filters that the boat yard that serviced our boat when we bought it used last week. The parts guy stopped me asked which of the 7 different filters I wanted based on DCA4 levels. When I talked to my diesel mechanic, he didn’t seen concerned at all about what filter to use…

Thanks Tony, I appreciate the response.

By the way, this new forum is terrific.  Don’t think I’ll be renewing my subscription to that other forum, you know the one.

This is the “long term field experience answer (30+yrs & 100’s on these engines later) “,  not the “book” answer.

The 6CTA 8.3 has MID-STOP piston liners and IS NOT coolant sensitive as to coolant erosion like many/most wet-linered engines are, nor it is what I call “coolant make-up” sensitive in anyway…………

Don’t worry, you’ll be just fine.. If you want to get a test kit, let us know what it says..
