2006 8.3 CTA 480hp randomly shuts off

July 13, 2022 at 11:49 am Good Afternoon, Ā I have a 2006 sea ray 420 with Cummins CTAās randomly my stbt engine is shutting off, no rhyme or reason( well Iām sure there is a reason) I had Cummins come out and they could not connect to engine through the diagnostic port( an issue that was there during survey a year ago( no communication for port) however when I put a meter on the fuel shutoff solenoid it holds batt voltage until it shuts off that voltage is zero volts. W…
7 RepliesAugust 8, 2022 at 6:36 pm There is none of this itās all built into the injection pump. I finally got a scanner on it today and engine rpm/load on this engine are moving up parallel with engine in neutral. So whatever is calculating load is inaccurate ( I believe map/maf or boost sensor, or fuel flow sensor.)Ā Ā Other engine will idle at 3-5% throttle and have 0 loadon it until I shift to gear, than it will touch 25% and drop down to 10% or so. Ā Questionable engine will…

April 17, 2019 at 11:00 am Hello All, I would like to start performing my own oil changes. I am at the 75 hour mark since the last change. Engines: Cummins 6BTA 5.9 330hp @ 2800 Hours: 1,051 for each engine I have been trying to identify a step by step process for the oil change protocol, but have not had any luck. For example, what hardware are you using to extract the oil? I have located various oil change kits on West Marine and Amazon etc…, but I wanted to s…

Sorry so long in replying, just today found that notifications of postings have been going to junk mail.

May 21, 2018 at 3:55 pm G’day All, Wondering if anyone has had a similar issue as what I am encountering at the moment. Basically the engine in overheating once under load. I can idle around all day but as soon as I get over 10 knots the temperature goes up to the stage of setting off the temperature alarm. The motors are Cummins 6BTA 5.9 m3 370hp. What I have done so far: First I thought I might have picked up a plastic bag – so I got a diver in and checke…

Not hitting WOT RPM

June 15, 2020 at 7:54 am Hi, 2000 Bayliner 4087 Twin Cummins 6BTA 5.9 270 (300hrs on engines, previous owner hardly used it) Engine Serial Numbers Starboard: 45708033 Port: 45710278 Pleasurecraft; weekends and 2 week holidays. ~50hrs a year. The issue I am trying to solve is why I am not getting WOT of >2600 when loaded to bear. When I first purchased the vessel, last year, it would get 2750 WOT RPM. I then motored the boat home to Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada fro…
8 RepliesJune 17, 2020 at 2:11 pm I did check the linkage and fuel solenoid for full travel, no apparent issues there. The remaining items I am not able to check myself due to lack of tools and/or expertise. If those checks and aftercooler cleaning are the next steps, I guess it’s time to hire a mechanic. Thanks Rob

Raw water in oil
This topic has 14 replies, has 8 voices, and was last updated by 3 years ago
October 12, 2017 at 1:55 pm My port engine has raw water in it. I have pressure tested the heat exchanger and I can’t make it leak. How did the water get in there? What a mess.
14 RepliesMay 4, 2020 at 9:04 am Hey guys, I just had this situation happen with my newly installed last August Cummins 5.9 6BTA 330hp. Oil full off raw water. Flushed engine immediately for the past two days after shutting off raw water. Finally have all clean oil coming out. All signs point to aftercooler failure but have not done further investigation. Engine had 9hrs on it. What was the outcome of the last post? Any suggestions while I try to get the install shop to help?

Changing exhaust hoses

November 27, 2019 at 3:01 pm Well, I finally managed to change my 3″ dia exhaust outlet hose, but damn that was NOT easy!! It was like they were glued on to the muffler outlet… there was a point where I thought it’d be impossible to get off. After twisting and pulling centimeter by centimeter the finally did come off. My next project was going to be replacing the big 10″ hoses, but now I’m seriously spooked. Any tips or words of encourageme…
8 RepliesDecember 8, 2019 at 9:29 am Yes, Must be very careful as you get closer to pipe. But this is true if you use a knife or hack-saw. Also, once you cut through the wire reinforcement, the hose tends to “pop apart” and separate from the pipe. It makes it much easier to remove when it does that. Or as you get close to a complete cut-through, use a screw- driver blade to do the final separation. But must be really careful when Dremel, but a must for me when th…

January 20, 2018 at 9:53 am I’m looking at a 2003 43 sportfisher with 480CEs 4400 hours. Owner states the hours have been 96 percent 10kts or less traveling to baja and back. He also states that fact can be proven from digital logs. Receipts and logs look like the maintenance has been done. Port aftercooler was replaced last year and starboard was removed and cleaned a at the same time. I know it’s impossible to answer with the information I have………

February 23, 2019 at 5:54 pm Dear Tony, Carolina Classic 28 with a pair of 6BTA5.9 M3 330HP. Roughly 2200 hours on the engines with no major problems. Cummins did a full service at 2000 hours which included adjusting the values. I generally put about 60-80 hours a year on the engines. I also have your water pumps on for the last three years. I had a strange problem with my starboard engine that happened on my last trip in December, the afternoon before I had to haul and wi…

When you pull the head, drop the valves on 5 & 6.. You’ll see it big time on the stems and seats. As to all the rest-No sense fixing the damage until you fix the “reason” why it happened–It’s called Poor Exhaust design & not following both …

April 6, 2019 at 4:38 pm Think it’s time to call around and get a professional diesel mechanic out to the boat. If you were following my other thread you saw that my stbd 1999 330 HP 6BTA 5.9 M3 fried the fuel solenoid. Port engine working fine. My solenoid (original) was obsolete of course and the replacement I’ve gotten from the local Cummins distributor doesn’t fit. So I decided to cut my losses and tie wrap the fuel lever in the up position and …

Our year plus of local ‘practice’ and couple of months of voyage planning paid off. We had no navigational or other mechanical issues. No surprises at all. We’re ready to head south again after hurricane…

April 8, 2019 at 12:57 pm Hello, I’m looking at an ’03 with Cummins 480 CE’s. I wanted to ask what I could expect to pay for the aftercooler/heat exchanger service provided it hasn’t been done in the last 2-3 years? Regards, Bobby
12 RepliesApril 10, 2019 at 3:10 pm Fresh water flushing with the engine on or off is dependent on where you are inserting the fresh water in the system (before or after the seawater pump) and exhaust design. If you insert fresh water ore seawater pump then the overpressure some have mentioned only occurs if you shut the thru hull. Itās not required to shut the thru hull as the fresh water dilution is what you after, although many do shut the valve. No harm either way but if you d…

March 2, 2018 at 9:23 am Good morning, I have an issue with one of my 5.9 6BTA 370 hp. motors. Throttle and shifter hydraulic system – unknowns

August 4, 2018 at 2:00 pm Pic is of ‘hydraulic’ reservoir/tank next to diesel generators fuel filter – aft stbd bulkhead, engine compartment of a 1999 Maxum 4100 SCA. Google search has me thinking it’s a hynautic brand hydraulic engine control – or something like that?? While I haven’t completely traced them yet, I believe the tank ‘outputs’ go to throttle/transmission and the ‘inputs’ come from helm throttle …
5 RepliesAugust 5, 2018 at 4:35 pm Yes, that reservoir is for throttle and shifter. Steering has it’s own reservoir up at the helm by the steering wheel. Suggest to add fluid and air pressure to what is shown in your pic. Might have to “bleed’ the lines if have air trapped in the hydraulic hoses. I have the original manual for it if you need specific info. Probably on-line also. Good luck.
