Good Afternoon,   I have a 2006 sea ray 420 with Cummins CTA’s randomly my stbt engine is shutting off, no rhyme or reason( well I’m sure there is a reason) I had Cummins come out and they could not connect to engine through the diagnostic port( an issue that was there during survey a year ago( no communication for port) however when I put a meter on the fuel shutoff solenoid it holds batt voltage until it shuts off that voltage is zero volts. Which is inclining me to believe something is telling it to shut down. I consider myself a pretty decent mechanic but I do have some technical questions. This engine has mechanical injection But has an ecm. What does the ecm look for as far as inputs , and what would cause it to cut fuel to the engine( cut power to fuel solenoid)I would assume oil pressure, coolant temp and maybe exhaust temp? Any help would be greatly appreciated!   thank you!

    New Data

There is none of this it’s all built into the injection pump. I finally got a scanner on it today and engine rpm/load on this engine are moving up parallel with engine in neutral. So whatever is calculating load is inaccurate ( I believe map/maf or boost sensor, or fuel flow sensor.)    Other engine will idle at 3-5% throttle and have 0 loadon it until I shift to gear, than it will touch 25% and drop down to 10% or so.   Questionable engine will be at 0 % Load and 0% throttle. When shifted in gear load stays at zero, reving it in neutral rpm% and load% match 1:1 with no load.   Had 9 stored codes:  SPN424197, SPN396288, SPN5376, SPN68864, SPN413184, SPN399104 SPN396544, SPN413440, SPN265216 Getting closer!!!

Tie Wrap the fuel shut off solenoid to the Pull-in point to eliminate it and the key switch, etc.

Checked all connectors and terminals, swapped ecms and still shuts off randomly. Does anyone have a parts breakdown of the 8.3 480CE injectors pump. There are a bunch of wires going into it, and im thinking something in there is not happy, and telling the computer to shut it down. In the process of buying a scanner so I can plug in and have more data but until than….

I will check that today, I started simple, just not that simple. They do vibrate a lot, and i did find the wires going to the fuel solenoid screws loose as well. I appreciate your response! And I will follow up.

A loose/faulty connection at the on engine CB is no different than shutting off the key.

It’s not the engine breakers for it starts back up randomly without resetting anything. When it shuts off it does Not stumble it just turns off ( like key was switched off. It does it at any rpm not just idle. Something in the ecm is telling it to shut off.

Check the on engine circuit breaker (see attached photo).  You can search on this forum for what the breaker does.

Also, have you seen this: https://www.sbmar.com/articles/cummins-marine-6cta-8-3-m4-480ce-stall-stumble-ecm-fix/
