November 16, 2021 at 3:54 pm Hello Forum Members, I cannot for the life of me locate a “low coolant sensor with wire” attached to the coolant tank on the new marine ReCon QSB 5.9 480 SN# 60703292 and Shop Order No: DR6587-RX I’ve upgraded the OEM SmarctCraft electronic engine monitoring panels to SMX Double Panel displays with NEMA 2000 interface. A very nice display package. Here are some pictures. Can anyone help locate the coolant sensor?…Or did C…

    • Smartcraft to new seaboard instruments

December 30, 2019 at 2:48 pm I have QSB’s 2005 and want to do away with the old smartcraft screens, and upgrade to the SMX panels on this site. I also have the mechanical gauges that are smartcraft. My question is, do I use the original wiring harness/loom on the engine or does the engine wiring also get changed when I upgrade the control panel, and do I eliminate all the mechanical gauges?

    • ECM Calibration

April 1, 2020 at 2:24 pm As part of rebuilding one of my 480s after an exhaust valve seat failure, I had planned on having the ECU updated to incorporate the light load stumble update. In speaking with the Cummins folks I asked if it would be possible to code the ECU to a slightly lower horsepower output. He wasnā€™t completely sure, but thought it might be possible. Does anyone (Tony) have any information that this is possible and would it help de-tune the 480 so we can…

August 2, 2020 at 11:27 am Cummins in MA was kind enough to send the cal harness that fits the ECM to my local Cummins dealer. They updated to the latest update. We’ve been back in the water, after rebuilding one engine and swapping the head on the other. No idle stumble/shutdown and the idle seems smoother than it used to be. Update the ECMs was good advice.

July 20, 2020 at 12:37 pm I had QSB6.7 550’s installed in 2018. i am past 2 years from when Cummins did the “start up”. When I read the warranty paperwork it says the in service date is: The in-service date is defined as 1) the date of the initial delivery of the Engine to the first end user (through purchase, lease, or loan), or 2) the date when 200 hours of operation for Quantum Series Engines (QSB5.9/ QSB6.7/QSC8.3/QSL9/QSM11/X15) have accumlulated…

July 20, 2020 at 2:21 pm the 200 hour clause is there for new boats in dealer inventory. they may put up to 200 hours demonstrating to prospective buyers. once you took delivery of your boat the warranty was in force. Unless the dealer never entered the in service date and is willing to Lie to Cummins on your behalf.

December 17, 2019 at 3:09 pm hello, trying to figure out exactly what is needed for electronics to start a qsb on the shop floor? I do have a spare smart craft display along with a mercury dts throttle heads kicking around. I guess starting back at square one i picked up a low hour 380hp qsb for a spare, but when it came in there is a tag on the motor saying bad ecu, so just trying to evaluate what i have here. i also have a good ecu from a parts motor i can swap over if th…

    • Changing serpentine belt

September 25, 2019 at 6:43 am Hello My mechanic changed our serpentine belts as part of the big service. One hour into our first trip out I could smell burning. Called him and he said that was ok as there is tensioner. 30 hours later belt broke. Called him again back and he could not explain the reason I checked all pullies and all fine apart from the one where the 2 belts are. All the screws were loose and the pulley was wobbly. I suspect this is the reason why the belt bro…

April 19, 2018 at 5:50 pm The older qsb with a v belt is so simple and works great for tensioning. The flat serpentine belt is a just a crazy design. Anyone have tips to pit it on. I just did two and replaced a pump to a seaboard pump. I think the jabsco pump was easier than the seaboard pump. Had to loosen everything then pry the belt over. Seems to tight to me. The jabsco pump I put one bolt in and levered the pulley into place with a pry bar. Reguardless I think itā€™s…

    • Qsb 380 oil temp.

This topic has 18 replies, has 7 voices, and was last updated by28Cuttyhunk 6 years ago

November 3, 2017 at 4:44 pm I have read the spec sheet here and it shows oil temp 260 deg. Max { sump }. My smart craft shows I am running at no more then 249 deg. On warmup I see it climb past a bit then drop to 240 then creep up again to 249. Is there a thermostat opening at that point? Is this normal or too close. My pressure and water temp are normal. Also what do they mean by sump? Thanks ahead.
