I have read the spec sheet here and it shows oil temp 260 deg. Max { sump }. My smart craft shows I am running at no more then 249 deg. On warmup I see it climb past a bit then drop to 240 then creep up again to 249. Is there a thermostat opening at that point? Is this normal or too close. My pressure and water temp are normal. Also what do they mean by sump? Thanks ahead.

All of our Q series engines leave with our very own SMX J1939 instrumentation… no SMARTCRAP!

One day I’d like to get a QSB 480 5.9 into a lobster boat.
Another fast lobster boat 28-30 ft.

Will it come with Smart Crap or a SMX Smart J1939

You just confirmed the answer 100%…….

    SMARTCRAP

Just in case you want to–You can go into “settings” and turn off that option as it “really not there” anyway..

Out of courisoty I just went out and turned on the Smartcraft. Boat was at the dock for last 24 hours. Cycled through the readout. Air temp was 60 deg. Coolant 64 deg , that makes sense, Oil temp is 136 deg. ???
I think you are right on, it means nothing. Sorry I wasted your time, thanks again

I can now guarantee what you are seeing has ZERO to do with what your QSB has going on..

This is a “SMARTCRAP” glitch carried over the from the Mercury outboard crap that should have never been adapted to, or been part the the Cummins very solid base electronics system.. Just one more reason I walked away from these junk electronics about 4 years ago and went 100% SAE J1939, and Cummins finally said “no more”, about 18 months ago……………………………..

Totally ignore what you are seeing as its “FAKE” as your engines ECM does not monitor engine oil temp…

    Warm up

Engine comes up to temp 175 this usually takes a while depending on rpm.
ā€œ oil temp ā€œ comes up along with coolant temp.
If I leave the Smartcraft on oil temp, I can watch it climb up steadily. It hits about 250 then drops down like a thermostat is opening . Then climbs back up to just under 250 and stays there.
Whatā€™s interesting is the pic I snapped for you was taken 2 hours after shutdown and read 206 deg. My engine was only warm to the touch . Coolant was 100 deg.

    Oil temp

Iā€™m the first to admit, I donā€™t know what the reading is. My sport fish has twin veradoā€™s with smartcraft. It gives you oil temp. Both my veradoā€™s are dead on. Water temp is 146 deg. Oil temp is 210 deg.
I thought I am reading the same thing on this Smartcraft. I thought itā€™s hot and the temp comes up fast. Cummins spec is for no more then 260.
    And therefore this thread.

While I am looking into this, I have a question related to your posting that makes little sense.

You said that on “warm up” the temp climbs past 249, then drops and and then may come back up to 249?..

Explain exactly what you mean by “warm up”………………………………………… 240F is a pretty high number which means that the surface of your oil pan would basically “boil spit”……………..I just don’t buy it..

Gear temp that high?–He’d take out the oil seal/ clutch piston seals in short order.

My buddy’s Donzi has twin Mercury Verados (outboards) and that same looking gauge and those engines have oil temp senders. Remember that gauge is “one size fits none”….Are you sure it’s actually reading engine oil temp? That is a high number, expecially if at cruise, not on the pins.. You can use an IR gun and shoot that pan, filter, etc for a semi-rough comparison.

Could that be transmission oil temp?

Well , there ya go–You have something that says “OIL” and temp… But I need to question what it really is.. Give me a few days to research this…..

I must say, I am scratching my head of this one..

Send me that pic direct [email protected]

Maybe I have missed something over the past 10+ years (very possible) but I was not aware that oil pan/sump temps were monitored by the Factory Smartcraft system..

Snap a good picture or two of what you are seeing..
