April 14, 2024 at 6:50 am I think I’m missing something. For years I was able to search the forum. over the last several months the search function in the forum only returns parts selections. Ive tried logging in on different computers and with the following search engines, Safari, Chrome and google. No luck. Is there a setting im missing any ideas on how to get the forum search function to work? All other aspects of the site work. This post will be a test as to wh…

April 13, 2024 at 9:59 pm What does this sender sense and where does the signal go?Ā I can read the word “sender” on the unit but the rest is faded and smudged. I’m attaching a stock photo with the sender circled and also a photo of the one installed on my engines. Thanks! Kyle

Filler neck disconnected partially from cast iron heat exchanger
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 week ago
April 13, 2024 at 5:20 pm I’m trying to figure out a repair method. The old Cummins 903 has no visible serial number. The label on the valve cover is destroyed. I cannot see the numbers that might exist above the seam for the block and sump.Ā <br />I was thinking of removing the old neck and buying a new one from sbmar.com. They want a serial # to determine if the one they have in stock is going to fit.Ā <br />I really donāt want to remove the exchanger i…
1 ReplyApril 14, 2024 at 6:21 am If it was me, I’d look around for a filler neck with a flange built in to it, and then figureĀ out a way to adapt it to your oldĀ rusty iron tank.. Yes, you’d need to clever and totally hands-onĀ to do it..

Ā Here are photos.Ā Ā Ā The Tag looks to read Delco Remy 12V 105 Amp made for Cummins.Ā It is a 12V, 3-wire alternator putting out 105 amps. Yes – i have cleaned up the 3-Wire Harness, a…

Chronic high pressure fuel pump bearing failure.

April 12, 2024 at 3:16 am Has anyone experience unusually high failure rate of front bearing on HP fuel pump part# 3973228? I’m about to put on a 3rd one in the span of a year. The first one lasted a couple of weeks in May 2023. the second one failed this month (11 months later). This last failure caused the gear to drive into time cover case causing serious damage with over a cupful of metal shavings. Going to have to drop oil pan and replace timing cover case. An…

6bta-330, boost and transmission pressure gauges
This topic has 6 replies, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 1 week ago
April 9, 2024 at 3:57 pm 6bta-330 I’m having problems with the wiring of my engines to the Digital View display panels for boost and transmission pressure gauges. I installed new 0-150 vdo pressure sending units. the engines already had the VDO transmission pressure sending units installed. The transmission pressure sending unit is connected to the white wire on the on-engine harness to the display panels. The boost pressure sending unit is connected to one of the…
6 RepliesApril 15, 2024 at 4:15 pm I took your advice and reread the install/user manual again but I did it at the boat this time. The important information, in my case, was the pin locations for the primary and secondary connector. You were 100% correct, when you said it was wired incorrectly. I made a mistake in a previous post. The hour meter works but the trip hour meter does not work. On the primary connector, there is a purple wire in location # 2 where a red wire is suppo…

Qsb 5.9 belt squeak at startup
This topic has 6 replies, has 4 voices, and was last updated by 2 weeks ago
April 8, 2024 at 1:01 pm Iāve read the other posts here on this topic with no luck. Every initial startup, the belt squeaks for 5-10min. Then no noises the rest of the day. Iāve Ā replaced belt, fresh water pump, raw water pump, tensioner, and alternator. Iāve noticed a lot more belt dust on that motor than the other and am at my wits end. Could the alternator be working too hard initially? It shouldnāt, as the batteries are always on the charger. I also could not find t…
6 RepliesApril 11, 2024 at 4:40 am Joe, Glad you sorted out theĀ what belt.Ā Great trick Next–Could the alternator be experiencing an abnormal draw at warmup?Ā 100% yes, but the only simple way to know is if you are monitoring battery terminalĀ voltage just before turning the key and watching it after start-up/warming up Say you are at 12.4-12.6-ish at the battery terminal and your cold alternator regulator set point is 14.0V.Ā The alternator will go t…

Alternator overcharging
This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 weeks ago
April 7, 2024 at 4:48 am I am wanting help to solve, what I understand is a very unusual problem, with a 24V Delco 22S1 alternator on a youngish Cummins 6CTA 8.3 mechanical diesel engine. It has suddenly begun to continually pump out highly fluctuating / high current into a bank of 2 x 12V, fully charged, (electrolyte SG > 1.24) lead acid / deep cycle batteries – connected in series. The Amps range is about 15-70 Amps at the idle RPM of 600. The duration of ea…
2 RepliesApril 8, 2024 at 2:32 pm Tony is an expert, I am not but I agree with him.Ā Ā Take it to a good repair shop and if need be is get a good marine electrician down to have a go over. Just because it is a new alternator does not mean it cannot have a problem.Ā Ā The problem of course could lie elsewhere.

6CTA Air Filters – 2 part question
This topic has 5 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 2 weeks ago
April 5, 2024 at 9:32 am Looking to either service or replace my air filters… SN 46309849 SBMar store states S&B Air Filters DO NOT replace Walker Air-Sep filter elements. I don’t know what a Walker Air Sep filter is.Ā Current one has a metal end cap and some holder springs..Ā Second part – I highly doubt the air filter has ever been changed in the life of the boat.Ā How much of a service item is this really for people?Ā Is this a regular se…
5 RepliesApril 8, 2024 at 2:40 pm The Walker Air Sep is intended to separate the oily vapour ejected from the crankcase from the actual air flow so the oil can be discarded without fouling the air filters s0Ā quickly. Seaboards’Ā crankcase venting is another way to do the same thing.Ā Ā Look it up.

April 4, 2024 at 5:15 pm Purchased this 2001 Tiara 3800 with 6CTAs 4 years ago, these were the mounts on the vessel, not sure how far they date back but I am starting to wonder if they are good or not, the left motor seems to vibrate alot more than it used to under way.Ā Ā Ā Ive been reading some threads about alignment as well, anything obvious to look at or photograph to be able to tell? Qsb 6.7 leaking water out of both check valves on the aftercooler
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 weeks ago
April 4, 2024 at 4:57 pm Hey everyone. I have a water leak coming out of both my aftercoolers. Itās leaking out of the check valve or condensation drain on the bottom of the aftercoolers. Starboard is worst than the port. Port being more like a sprinkle and the starboard more like a constant trickle of water. Could this be a good indicator for a damaged core?

QSB 6.7 Fuel Pump question
This topic has 4 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 weeks ago
April 4, 2024 at 3:58 pm An acquaintance of mine made a mistake. He was changing his fuel filters and started his engine without turning the fuel feed and return lines on. He stated he let it run for about 5 seconds, noticed it sounded rough, and then again for about 10 seconds. He said he ended up with about a pint of diesel in his bilge with spray around the fuel pump. He cleaned it up, and the engine ran fine. However, he noticed a slight diesel residue at the bottom…
4 RepliesApril 8, 2024 at 4:36 pm Thanks Clark, my parts book shows a breakdown of the fuel pump with three o rings, but curiously doesnāt show the shaft seal. His engine is the same as mine. We will see what happens.Ā

Rust in Coolant pipe
This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 2 weeks ago
April 4, 2024 at 10:12 am Took the heat exchanger off my 6bta to get cleaned. Going to reinstall it with all new hoses and found the pipe leading to the thermostat to be extremely rusted. Anything I should do for this issue? Or just flush remaining coolant as much as possible and fill with new?
2 RepliesApril 8, 2024 at 11:57 am If you can, take a sample of the so called coolant and send it to an oil testingĀ lab.Ā Yes, they do coolant testing also. Heavy rust like that says you have had seawater enter the engine which could do interior damage. Pressure test the system for leaks. Remove as much rust as you can.Ā Ā Then use a product such as Cummins cleaner,Ā RESTORE, following directions for treatment AND removal/flushing.Ā Ā Be prepared to do it a couple of times.Ā Ā Ā R…

Sharing QSB 5.9 Freshwater Flush Zincs
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
April 3, 2024 at 11:17 am Hello forum members, I figured I’d share the pictures of the three zincs removed from the QSB 5.9 480 after a five month summer season up here in Kittery Maine. I was diligent in freshwater flushing the engine after each use. Total hours on the season was +- 150 hrs. burning 4 gal/hr on the season. From L to Right: Bottom of after cooler…..Top of aftercooler….Heat exchanger. Note the degradation in the bottom aftercooler zinc…
3 RepliesApril 5, 2024 at 8:36 am 100% freshwater hose blasting away through the T adaptor with engine seacock “closed in the video” and engine running. About halfway through the season I flushed with seacock “open”. It was a bugger reaching down and closing the 2″ seacock and then re-opening. I also think the zincs look normal. Prop shaft & rudder zincs (Godfrey brand, not cheap Camps) about 70% consumed, no complaints. The proof of the results…

Feeding 6CTA 8.3 with a backup pump
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 2 weeks ago
April 3, 2024 at 10:10 am After installing the SBM DD filter system, I want to plum it so I can bypass these filters in the event of an at sea clogged filter. I have a separate filter system using FS1218 and a Morco pump. I can easily plum this system to feed both my engines in case of a failure. This pump is capable of 2.5 GPM and up to 20PSI. Is it OK to have this feeding my engines? My current system is gravity feed, so I don’t know what kind of head pressure is…

6cta slow acceleration and black smoke
This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 3 weeks ago
April 3, 2024 at 8:16 am I am having slow acceleration and black smoke from 1300 to 2200 rpms. Takes about 15-20 seconds to go through that rpm range. Boat is 40ā Ā just had bottoming done, serviced aftercoolers, heat exchangers, impellers, and fuel. I do not have boost gauges.Ā
2 RepliesApril 3, 2024 at 11:34 am No idea why you’d check your fuel filters w/black smoke, but the air filter isn’t a bad idea.<br /><br />Better than that, navigate to the low power troubleshooting guide on this site and go through it step by step.
