minimum clearance to wood support from dry riser
This topic has 2 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
February 25, 2017 at 3:23 pm Wondering what would be acceptable distance for clearance ? I have about 2.5 inches with no blanketĀ , when heat blanket is installed it will be less than 1″.Ā Engine is a QSB Ā 380 cummins .
2 RepliesFebruary 26, 2017 at 6:28 pm As Rob said–Clearance is good–But it is somewhat wrap quality dependent. Tony

So, where does the spent zinc material go?
This topic has 6 replies, has 5 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
January 17, 2017 at 10:50 pm I recently replaced each of the zincs in QSB’s in both engines.Ā Ā They really were not all that bad, but since they are not all that expensive I figure to just replace them when I pulled them.Ā None of them were broken off, but had that “buttery” look that they get. My question is what happens to the material that sluffs off the zinc pencils?Ā Ā Does the material collect somewhere in the RW circuit?Ā Does it just dissolve, small …

clearance for exhaust to salon floor before wet ell
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
February 7, 2017 at 7:27 am I’m in the middle of a repower with reman 450c cummins engines as replacement for 671tibs in a 1989 41 Viking. I’m trying to get max height as possible using 2 short turn ells comming off of the turbo. This will place the stainless steel ell about 2 inches from the salon under side of the floor before any turbo wrap or insulation. What would be a safe clearance for the hot ell off the turbo? What is the recommended insulation to use …
1 ReplyFebruary 7, 2017 at 2:17 pm Any pics of what you are working with? Fiberglass wrap on the dry riser, will be ~valve cover temperature or less. Ā Here’s my Seaboard risers, without and with the wraps.

February 3, 2017 at 10:06 am recently purchased new delco alternators (upgrading from 22SI to 24SI). the new alternators are silver and wondered if I could paint them Cummins white or would that cause an issue with paint getting on the inside ?
3 RepliesFebruary 4, 2017 at 8:10 am Most get painted so I guess it does not hurt anything. Ā Tony

raw water pump gizmo
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
January 2, 2017 at 5:08 pm Just ran across an ad for an item called “Speedseal Life” , it’s an impeller cover with a teflon disc and Ā wingnuts, said to double impeller life, and make impeller changes less painful. I don’t have problems with impeller life, as I change them (Seamax) annually anyway, but I do run a single engine boat in some remote areas, known for their nasty conditions, so my interest in this gizmo is in the area of making the pump …
3 RepliesJanuary 4, 2017 at 5:36 pm Thanks for the replies, and yes, their website was a bit hokey! The O ring cover with thumbscrews is not a half bad idea though, sometimes getting a wrench in there along with a hand to turn it (blind) is asking a lot, and paper gaskets are too delicate to be using where you can’t see. Rob, I’m not a movie guy, I just like the word “gizmo”. I looked it up, and it means “An unspecified or unspecifiable object; someth…

stubborn propeller
This topic has 11 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
December 10, 2016 at 6:32 pm So, I’m dealing with a stubborn 24″ prop on a 1.5″ shaft, 4 blade. No information available for when this has last been pulled. Some issues getting a puller rigged because the blades are blocking a straight path through next to the hub. I have a two bolt fine thread puller rigged and am using wrenches to tighten. This and some liberal map gas help has produced little progress. Also, have applied PB blaster to key area….I …
11 RepliesDecember 15, 2016 at 3:36 pm It’s off. Heat was the key…forgot my IR thermometer but I layed into it with the shrink wrap gun. Tightened puller once after heat session, then heat again. A few knocks with the hammer didn’t produce anything, though it may have been unseen. Looks like the taper didn’t engage the whole way, I’ll be lapping the prop on install to ensure a good seat. This was the last try before purchasing the Walter puller (which wa…

25 contender steering problem
This topic has 3 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
December 12, 2016 at 8:18 pm Hi guys, I recently purchased my first boat a inboard 25 contender with a 42 Volvo penta. I love the boat and am very pleased with everything thus far except for one MAJOR issue. The boat has zero steering going backwards and very minimal going forward when traveling slowly. Ā Now I know what you guys are going to say that’s just how single screws steer. I have driven many single inboards and never one like this with almost zero authority g…
3 RepliesDecember 13, 2016 at 4:46 pm Interesting what Tony says and it would be nice to see what you get for rudder angle. Also, when you say slow speed ahead turning is bad. Are you in gear or coasting? Going astern full rudder vs 10 deg, I don’t see much difference on difference on MANY different boats, they all suck for trying to steer. Some with rudders which are under the hull that are close to the bottom with little area for water to slip by, seem to be best for slow sp…

November 27, 2016 at 11:25 am My boat is a 1999 with 6BTAs and new batteries. It’s done this since i bought the boat (3-4 months ago) and the survey mentioned nothing about it. When I turn the key the warning buzzer goes off, gauges activated, etc but then when I goto start the engines nothing. I turn the key off and do it again and they start. Both engines do this. Its really random also, sometimes they start first try and sometimes it takes 3 tries. When this happens…

November 26, 2016 at 5:18 pm I see your posts a lot on boat diesel I was hoping you can give me some pointers and sell me some parts. 4 RepliesNovember 25, 2016 at 5:07 am Thanks for the pics Bill. Ā Looking good. Ā Tiara does a real nice job on the exhaust. Westerbeke Generator neglect

November 23, 2016 at 5:17 pm Haven’t used my generator yet and I’ve been focusing on fixing other things on this new (to me ) boat. Wanted to flush generator with only 60 hours on it and noticed it wasn’t sucking in any raw water. Took out the impeller and replaced it with a new one (old one was fine) and then removed the heat exchanger and find this….see picture. Ā Well, no wonder! I guess it proves how important it is to not let sea water just sit &…

Hybrid boat discussion
This topic has 1 reply, has 2 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
November 23, 2016 at 7:07 pm I just read a great article about Hybrid boats in the most recent Professional Boat Builder magazine. Amongst some this is a touchy subject. That same group of people may even think that we should go back to steamā¦ or sail. I believe technology is a train, you either jump on boardā¦ or get ran over by it. There are two different types of Marine Diesel Electric Hybrid set upās. Serial and Parallel. On a Serial type set up you have a generat…
1 ReplyNovember 23, 2016 at 7:28 pm Space constraints, cost, weight, complexity, low hull speeds, the list goes on as to why hybrids aren’t really suitable for smaller (and especially planing) vessels. Reality is that the power that a gallon of fuel contains far exceeds what can be garnered from a battery based hybrid setup. My boat can do 1,000NM on a full tank of fuel that’s housed under the aft deck alone. To obtain that range from a battery, even the best lithium, …

Question on labor rates
This topic has 13 replies, has 7 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
November 11, 2016 at 8:16 am I had some work done on my boat and I got the bill and it was double what I expected. I was confused and asked why and they told me because they had 2 guys working on it so the rate doubled to $170/hour. They replaced a water heater so I know it isn’t cummins related so please tell me if this post isn’t allowed. (I figured general discussion I’d be ok) Aside from the fact that I’m not sure how 2 guys fit into a small spac…
13 RepliesNovember 23, 2016 at 9:01 am The mechanic’s I use have rates in the 100 to 110 range. Ā Sometimes they bring a helper, but the rate stays the same. Ā I do a lot of work myself, and always observe someone at least twice, before I’m comfortable with them working independently. Ā I pay very promptly (within a day), so get good attention and can negotiate a bit. Ā We never enter into a job with out understanding scope of work and a reasonable estimate of time. Ā I did ha…

Fuel filter with automatic drain
This topic has 1 reply, has 1 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
November 20, 2016 at 9:15 pm Our local marine supplier is promoting these filter units instead of Racors or behind Racors, anyone have any experience with these? Ā The word is the automatic drain works well when you get a slug of water in your fuel. Ā (common in remote AK). Ā First I heard of them was this week at Fish Expo in Seattle. Ā Tony, any experinience with these? https://schroederindustries.com/Products/fuel-filtration/diesel-fuel-coalescing/on-board-diesel-filtration/…

alternator output qsm-11
This topic has 7 replies, has 3 voices, and was last updated by 7 years ago
November 13, 2016 at 10:48 am Had alternator (delco 22si) stop putting out volts so removed and had it rebuilt. Installed it today (added new belt) and now its putting out 14.50 volts at idle. Drops to 14.35 at 1800rpm. I thought this alternator was regulated at 14.2? Is this enough voltage to damage batteries? Not a big deal and run it for awhile or pull it off again and take back to alternator shop? Engine is 535hp QSM-11 with 3,000 hrs. thanks, tom

5 RepliesNovember 14, 2016 at 7:25 pm Francisco, #1———-If your Cummins 6BTA 5.9 370 Diamonds are in tip-top shape, then understand this if you want for the best possible performance, coupled to overall economy, ability to jump up on plane easily and then attain the Ā long term reliability. For PROPPING PURPOSES, you have 355 BHP at 3125-3150 RPM Ā to work with. That means your engines MUST easily spin up to well over 2900 RPM while accelerating and then be able to at…

November 7, 2016 at 8:11 am repowered from one QSM 670 to new one and kept my old instrumentation, pyrometer, water flow and raw water heat alarms.
