    Hi guys, I recently purchased my first boat a inboard 25 contender with a 42 Volvo penta. I love the boat and am very pleased with everything thus far except for one MAJOR issue. The boat has zero steering going backwards and very minimal going forward when traveling slowly.  Now I know what you guys are going to say that’s just how single screws steer. I have driven many single inboards and never one like this with almost zero authority going backwards I would thing he the prop would push it left or rt but it does nothing please help?? Can I redo Rudder or replace prop I have no idea what to docontebder only made 12 of these boats to my knowledge or at least that’s what the contender rep told me st the boat show

    Interesting what Tony says and it would be nice to see what you get for rudder angle.

    Also, when you say slow speed ahead turning is bad. Are you in gear or coasting?

    Going astern full rudder vs 10 deg, I don’t see much difference on difference on MANY different boats, they all suck for trying to steer. Some with rudders which are under the hull that are close to the bottom with little area for water to slip by, seem to be best for slow speed maneuvering in my experience.

    Pics are pretty good and I will try and see if we can sort this out, but I need to know a lot more..  So, I will start by asking a few things and saying a few things too..

    FIRST  and most important–Single screw rudder steered boats never seem to do what you’d like in reverse, but with that said, they can do way better that what you have, in both reverse and when traveling Fwd at low speeds..

    Now for you————–How hand’s-on are  you? The reason I am asking is that you will need to be very “hands-on” to fix what needs to be fix if you want to solve this.. Plus you will spend some $$ do to it, but that will depend on your capabilities and the components you have now to work width

     

    The most basics you need to get your boat to steer at low speeds fwd,  and decent in reverse is  two things..

    #1——– a BIG enough rudder , and a 90 degree arch — 45 degrees either side of “STRAIGHT”.. You need to measure your total ruder arch—It looks like maybe 20 degrees x 2?………But with that, comes other things that you will most probably have to do.. Redesigning or replacing  parts of the steering system components

     

    #2—- Turns lock to lock now?

     

    #3—need to know what you have for a  ram—exact model , or all the specs

     

    #4—Need to see good pictures of the ram mounting

    Boats steer by putting water over the rudder. When going ahead, a short burst of power with get the boat turning without increasing speed too much. Also, most boats are horrible at backing for steerage (albeit outboards and twins). Something to combat this is putting the rudder in the direction that is desired and momentarily putting the engine ahead to “put some water” over the rudder. Then continue backing. I don’t think anything is wrong with your boat. Also, every boat drives a little bit different and the same boat with a different deckload drives different as well.
